Stage 6
The peloton arrived in the Auvergne yesterday and will stay in this region today. Starting in Issoire the stage ends in the small town of Saint-Flour. After a slightly hilly stage yesterday that was just that bit too hard for the sprinters to take the win today will probably be too hard for them to stay with the front group till the end. There are some cat. 2 and cat. 3 KoM sprints on the way so we’ll also see a battle for this classification as well. After his previous performances Yates should be the top favourite to take another stage win, this time wearing the maillot jaune.
The first attacker of the day is KoM leader Gee himself. He’s followed by Rojas. Those two get an increasing gap, but given the amount of KoM points awarded today it’s no surprise others still try to get to the front too. But the peloton still chases down any moves of 2 or more riders, staying with its time-tested approach of not letting more than 3 riders get away.
Mraouni manages a solo attack and is allowed to get away so it’s three up front today once again.
Mraouni takes the first KoM sprint (and 6 points) in front of Gee (19) and Rojas. Their lead is about 2’20.
Maybe the fight for the breakaway will start again soon as Rojas is dropped after the KoM sprint and will probably be reeled in by the peloton as he looks pretty spent already.
The Nicaraguan did fight some time but never stood a real chance of surviving. No further attacks from the peloton resulted in Gee taking the win to extend his lead (now 29 points). Mraouni is now on 14 points. The other points are taken from the peloton. Bagioli (8) gets 3rd place in front of Sunderland (14) and Khodayari (12).
Gee (39) also takes the next cat. 2 sprint. Mraouni (27) is 2nd again. Behind them it’s Sunderland (20), Bagioli (12) and Khodayari (14) again.
Gee stays solo until the next KoM sprint some km later and takes this too (45). Mraouni has fallen back and so Sunderland (24) and Bagioli (14) take the remaining points.
It’s Gee all on his own now and though his lead never really gets about 2 minutes he easily takes the next KoM too, making it 51 points for him. Behind him it’s Bagioli (18) and Khodayari (16) this time.
Gee wasn’t able to stay in front alone after all his efforts today so it’s back all together with 50 km to go.
The next attack is for the final KoM points from the usual suspects. It’s Bagioli (28) in front of Khodayari (24) and Sunderland (30) this time. The remaining points aren’t contested. It’s all back together after the downhill though.
We see the next action at the intermediate sprint. Grosu takes the 10 points to get nearer to the green jersey. Behind him it’s Hsu, Contreras, Farantakis and Jakobsen. With only 19 km and two smaller climbs remaining it’s possible we see some of the sprinters in the mix for the stage win as well.
But in the second to last climb it’s Madouas on the go! Kwiatkowski tried to get to him but didn’t make it, so the Frenchman is solo with a 24’’ lead on top of the hill.
The final climb starts with 2 km to go and that’s also the moment Madouas is brought back. It all looks like we’ll get another uphill sprint today.
We get one indeed. It’s hard to see any real accelerations given the pace of the riders, but under the red kite it’s Yates already in front, but it’s closer than yesterday. Madouas is still in 2nd but Cerny is close. Kwiatkowski seems like the last rider in contention at the moment.
With 700 m to go Yates as a bigger gap, but from now on it’s pretty flat to the line and – more importantly – the big guns are closing in fast. Especially Phinney comes closer fast.
But in the end the American can’t really endanger the Brit and Yates takes his second stage in a row. Phinney gets 2nd place and some precious bonus seconds while his big rival Lecuisinier comes in 5th. Kwiatkowski edges out Pogacar for the final podium spot. Preidler, Madouas, Cerny, Schultz and Barguil complete the Top 10. Despite some minor gaps the first 171 riders are awarded the same time.
Yates adds another day in yellow and green to his stage win. No changes in the other classification leads either, though Gee has massively improved his points and lead in the KoM.
