Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_04.jpg

The start of stage 4 is in Dinan, still in the Bretagne. But after a long ride of 222 km in northeastern direction the peloton leaves the Bretagne and finishes in the Normandy, to be more precise in Lisieux. The stage itself should be again one for the sprinters, though the number of bumps and short hills increases. We’ll most probably have a new man in the polka dots after this stage with some cat. 3 and cat. 4 KoM sprints on the way. The final km are uphill too, the finish resembles that of the first stage. But given how that went it should be for the sprinters nonetheless, so the list of favourites is pretty much the same once again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0047.jpg

The riders are on the road and the attacks start immediately. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin wants the polka dots today and follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Van den Bergs initial attack. On the left another familiar name tries too with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam. But those attacks are ultimately shut down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0048.jpg

Some attacks and counter attacks later it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee who get away. Two more riders we’ve seen on the attack in the last days already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0049.jpg

After some more attacks from the peloton the sprinters teams make it pretty clear they don’t want more than three riders in the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam finally manages to get away solo and is now on the hunt on his own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0050.jpg

The Guatemalan quickly makes it to the front and the three get a nice gap of 5‘45 until they start the first categorized climb of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam is also the only one of the three who already has some KoM points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0051.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee takes the 6 points after a long attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam gets 4 points and takes over the provisional lead with 7 points in total. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg takes the last 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0052.jpg

It’s the same order at the intermediate sprint. Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu take the remaining points from the pack. The break’s lead is down to 3’15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0053.jpg

At the second KoM sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee tries a long way attack again but this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam takes the better of him and has now 13 points. The Canadian is on 10 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg on 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0054.jpg

The third KoM sprint and the third time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee attacks with a long way to go. It seems to be successful at first but finally it’s a pretty close call. He’s given the 5 points at last to make it 15 for him with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg in second place (now 7 points). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam is only third, resulting in him missing the KoM jersey by a single point. The peloton has a gap of exactly a minute with 30 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0055.jpg

The catch is made with 17 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png ELCO - ABEA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar were the teams working all day in the peloton and will probably be the ones to work till the end given they’ve been the only teams trying to use sprint trains so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0056.jpg

With 3 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png ELCO - ABEA are indeed building trains and have both two leadouts left. The road is about 3-4 % uphill from now on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0057.jpg

In the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu leaves his teammates to surf some wheels while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis launches his sprint with still 1.2 km to go. That can’t work out with the constant elevation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0058.jpg

And the Greek is already losing positions with 700 m to go. At the moment it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lander who are leading, but it’s still a long way to go and behind them it’s pretty packed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0059.jpg

300 m to go and now it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Cerny who’s in the lead (on the far right). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates is second, so maybe the finish really is too hard for the pure sprinters? It doesn’t seem like anyone could still accelerate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0060.jpg

One man can! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad is coming really fast, even when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Cerny starts celebrating. But in the end the stage is just a bit too short and the Czech takes the win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates complete the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0061.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh finish 4th to 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lander, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda complete the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu comes in as 16th and should stay in yellow. He’ll probably lose the green jersey though (though not to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen who finishes right behind him).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0062.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Cerny for a surprising stage win! He’s also 3rd in the GC and 2nd in the points classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu stays in yellow and green (though the Czech will wear the latter jersey tomorrow) while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen stays in the lead in the U25 competition. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee gets the polka dots as a reward for his efforts today.
