Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 6
182.8km

It’s Morton who leads the favorites today as the GC contenders need to establish some gaps. Areruya has shown himself as a worthy opponent and might challenge on a finish like this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/02.jpg

Budenieks is the first attacker in an attempt to get the breakaway started. It’s no surprise to see lots of attackers today with so many KOM points on offer and this being a chance for a breakaway to survive to the end in the right scenario. 12 breakaway for good with: Budenieks, Katrasnik, Colombo, Hofland, Hosek, Gougeard, Cherkasov, Mansouri, Hoelgaard, Azman, Herregodts, and van Niekerk.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/03.jpg

The first KOM point comes with 162.5km to go and its a cat 3. Hosek is 2nd in the KOM coming into the day so these are important points for him. He’s not going to be good enough in this group though as Hoelgaard comes crashing over for 6 points. Budenieks takes 2nd and Van Niekerk 3rd. COlombo and Katrasnik are dropped in the fight for the points but come back quickly. The gap is 4:45 and they’re already climbing the 2nd hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/04.jpg

The 2nd KOM is also a 3rd category and this one is taken by Hoelgaard, followed by Van Niekerk and Azman. Hoelgaard’s points now put him at 36 and into 2nd place. The gap with 150km to go is 6:00 and there’s a long while before the next points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/05.jpg

A 2nd category climb - Col de la Croix Haute is 6.2km at 6%. At the top, Hosek attacks first but is matched by Budenieks and Van Niekerk. Hoelgaard got blocked a tad and Hosek is back into 2nd in the KOM. The standings at this were: Herregodts, Hosek, Budenieks, Van Niekerk, and Colombo - but some managers may be asking for another double check at where the times were taken. Alas the organizers say they’re certain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/06.jpg

Another 3rd category climb follows immediately before the longest descent of the day. Hosek tries to lead from the front but Hoelgaard comes through. This time, the points are Hoelgaard, Van Niekerk, Herregodts with Hosek just missing out. Hoelgaard now sits at 44 and in the temporary lead ahead of Areruya.

The breakaway has 6:00 still with 100km to go. The peloton is still intact with the exception of a few domestiques and Roson who punctured and has already fallen out of GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/07.jpg

They don’t pay any attention to the sprint point, so Budenieks falls through in first, Cherkasov takes 2nd and Gougeard 3rd. The gap to the peloton is down to 5:00 at this point as they approach the most challenging climb of the day - Col de Rousset - 18km at 4.6% (Cat 1).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/08.jpg

The peloton is lead by a conglomerate of teams - Popo4ever, Cedevita, Los Pollos Hermanos, and Sony - Force India seems to be the biggest contributors. As they reach the bottom of the climb, they’ve lowered the gap to 3:45 and are clearly trying to bring things back together. Looking at some sprinters, we’ll see a grupetto form somewhere in this climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/09.jpg

The breakaway makes it to the top of the climb without issue to contest the points - only Hofland, Colombo, Cherkasov, Gougeard and Katrasnik are dropped before the top. Mansouri loses contact in the final attacks for the points. Azman takes the top points here with Budenieks 2nd - Budenieks is now 4th in the KOM. Hoelgaard is 3rd, Hosek 4th, Van Niekerk 5th, and Herregodts 6th. Mansouri takes the leftovers behind but the first 6 are all that are together. Hoelgaard has extended his KOM lead with these points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/10.jpg

Behind, the peloton has shattered down to 68 riders with 45km to go. No major GC names dropped, but the race is getting selective quickly. Many will be happy Sagan is dropped since he might’ve had the punch to claim a victory today if he could make it to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/11.jpg

The second sprint point is another time to roll through. The breakaway is maintaining over 2 minutes to the peloton with 30km to go, but not much more than that. Hosek leads the charge through and by the time the peloton comes under that point, the rest of the breakaway is caught.

The peloton is continued to be lead by a number of teams. Lidl cycling occasionally adds a rider, but the 4 teams previously mentioned are the contributors here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/12.jpg

With 18km to go, the 6 leaders have 37 seconds over Fouche, who launched a solo attack. Behind, Min, Cort Nielsen and Schlegel are together also breaking from the peloton. They’ve been given 30 seconds which is more than enough for the GC lead to change. No one really wants to be the team to pace in the peloton now but Polar finally takes over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/13.jpg

With the 10km banner right ahead, the 4 escapees are returned to the group with Osorio and Padun on the move. The 6 leaders are still in front with 35 seconds but that can be swallowed in an instant. The round only goes uphill from now on out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/14.jpg

Arndt is the next attacker with 6km to go! Padun follows. Pogacar lets the wheel go bu then decides he has to chase as they reach a false plateau. Areruya also does not appreciate the move and collects the two with 5km to go. The pack follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/15.jpg

Faglum Karlsson is the next to attack and he’s allowed to go without a major follow. With 3.5km to go, he may be alone for the win but the road heads uphill very steeply soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/16.jpg

Faglum Karlsson still has 10 seconds but Choi has decided to push the pace now with 1.8km to go. Padun, Areruya, Latour, Pogacar, Morton, and Galta are among those following closely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/17.jpg

Under the banner, Areruya has caught up and looks very strong. The road flattens a bit in the last 400m, so he might be good enough to take the win again today. Pogacar, Latour, and Morton are all still there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/18.jpg

Areruya still has it with 300m to go but Morton has moved into 2nd. Latour is 3rd at this point with Pogacar, Faglum Karlsson, Choi and Padun the only others in the top group sprinting to the line. Morton might be the fastest at this point but is there enough room?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/19.jpg

Areruya wins agan! A fantastic finish that should move him to the yellow jersey. Morton 2nd, Latour 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/20.jpg

Padun 4th ahead of Faglum Karlsson who fought a bit above his weight today. Pogacar and Choi are the others in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S6/21.jpg

Aular is 8th - still moving up in GC potentially as he started the day in 9th. Galta, Arndt, Aranburu are the top 11 with a gap to the next major group.

Cort Nielsen and Bongiorno are the current top 10 GC placers to fall into G3. Min also loses major time today.
