Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_03.jpg

Welcome to another stage for the sprinters. Today the peloton will stay in the Bretagne. The start is in Carhaix quite in the middle of the region and from there the riders will head roughly in a northeast direction to the Gulf of Saint-Malo with the finish at Cap Fréhel. The route is a bit bumpier than yesterday, but there are still no real difficulties for the fast men, so the list of favourites is once again pretty much the same as the days before. At least there’s a KoM sprint today, so maybe we’ll get a new leader in this classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0032.jpg

The first attackers of the day are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Klaris once again and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg who was already part of some unsuccessful counter attacks the days before. They’re followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam. The peloton actually seems content with this group, but this also leads to some counter attacks. We’ll see how this will work out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0033.jpg

Those counter attacks are ultimately shut down, so the foursome is our break of the day. Whoever will win the KoM sprint 40 km into the stage will match pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba for the lead in this classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0034.jpg

And it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin who takes the 5 points. He beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Klaris in a sprint and could wear the polka dots tomorrow. The gap is at 5’10 after peaking at about 5’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0035.jpg

It’s the same result at the intermediate sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras (from the peloton) taking the minor points. The sprinters use this sprint to get their legs warm for the final in 95 km. The gap is down to 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0036.jpg

It’s not much happening for the next 60 km as the peloton slowly reduces the gap. With 30 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Buttigieg has to let the others go, but their lead is only 1’15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0037.jpg

With 18 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin decides he’ll go solo and drops his two companions on one of the small bumps. His lead to the peloton is only 45’’ though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0038.jpg

And the Frenchman is finally caught with 12 km to go. From now on it’ll be about putting the sprinters in a god position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0039.jpg

We’ve seen the usual suspects leading the peloton so far, but with 3.5 km to go it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Lauk taking over for yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen. That seems a bit early for the final leadout. Maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png ELCOs timing is better as they at least have two leadouts left on the right side. It’s slightly downhill for the next about 2 km, but from there on it’s a slightly uphill finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0040.jpg

We’re already in the uphill part and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij has taken over for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koumpetsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis are on their wheels and those four seem to have quite some speed advantage over the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0041.jpg

They have already passed the red kite and have some bike lengths to the others. And more importantly both favourites still have their leadout men in front of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0042.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis both launched with 700 m to go and seem to be the only contenders with 200 m to the line as their leadouts are still the next ones to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0043.jpg

And in the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu takes the win with a bikes length.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0044.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic takes the final podium spot. Behind him it’s a close call but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Cerny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates for 4th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Kiskonen complete the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen ends his time in the maillot jaune (and actually in the green jersey too) as 11th of the stage. There will be a reshuffling of most (and maybe even all) jerseys again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0045.jpg

And so it is as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu not only takes the stage win but also yellow and green. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen loses the lead in the points classification but will wear the jersey nonetheless as he’s 2nd there, resulting in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak wearing the white jersey for him furthermore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba stays in the polka dots.
