Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 5
159.8km
It’s time for the real mountains! The GC should start to finally straighten up after today, but also the KOM should be on offer for a good strategic breakaway rider.
We find the break formed rather easily up to 11 riders but it doesn’t appear like more will be let go with Polar protecting the yellow jersey of Latour. Ahead are: KOM leader Hosek, Hofland, Bellan, Matsumoto, Hoelgaard, Zumer, Buitrago, 3rd in GC Herregodts, Veyhe, Kurkle, and Colombo. With 138km to go they already have 3:15 on the peloton.
The first climb of the day is a Cat 2 Col des Leques 6km at 5.3%. Hosek is kept off the placings here to make the KOM interesting. 1st is Hoelgaard, 2nd Herregodts, 3rd Buitrago, 4th Matsumoto and 5th Colombo to close out the scoring. Together, the break holds 5:00 over the peloton at 100km after the descent.
The next climb is Cat 3 Col de Toutes Aures, a very shallow 6.7km at 3.3%. The final km is the steep section. Hoelgaard is again the strongest and Hosek again missed the points after a much better attempt. 2nd and 3rd go to Matsumoto and Herregodts who are also starting to amass points. Hoelgaard is the primary challenger though at 16 points to Hosek’s 26. The peloton is starting to wind up with just 3:45 to the break.
The sprint points is at the climb’s descent and the take it relatively in stride deciding to sprint at the end. Herregodts takes the 1st spot which actually puts him in 1st on bonus seconds. Zumer, Hoelgaard are the other two.
The sprint also sets up the next climb, a 15.6km 4.6% monster Col de la Colle Saint Michel. With 78 km to go to start. Still 3:45 at the beginning of the climb.
Hoelgaard paces much of the climb and is rewarded… with 2nd place at the top! Buitrago decides it is now his turn for some first place points. Hosek finally earns some points in 3rd while Matsumoto and Herregodts take 4th and 5th. Bellan and Hofland hold on enough to maintain a spot in the lead on the miniature descent while the rest of the breakaway fell off in the final 3km.
50km to go and the breakaway has 2:35 over the peloton of 114 riders. That 2nd category climb really dropped the sprinters and most of the good time trialists. Polar is trying it’s best to hold the pace, but clearly it is getting tiring for their domestiques. It is still good enough to bring back the 4 dropped breakaway riders though.
The peloton clearly decided they wanted to keep this under control as they head toward the Col d’Allos. The gap is just 33 seconds as they attempt the 13.1km 6.0% climb. And within a kilometer of climbing, the gap is gone all together.
Padun attacks solo with 6.0km left to go in the climb! He establishes a gap of 20 seconds and is able to maintain it for a bit. The pacing has turned over to Sony - Force India.
Padun is brought back and Areruya goes on the offensive with 2.6km left in the climb. There’s only 73 left in the peloton, but no one expected to contest has fallen to the wayside.
1km from the top, Areruya still has 12 seconds over Aranburu who is clawing the rest back. Pogacar, Morton and Latour all look phenomenal still.
Areruya takes all the points over the top, but there is basically no gap there. Pogacar, Latour, Morton, Arndt, Aular and Galta cover the scoring places but now we have a 19 person group heading down the descent together. In addition to those scoring at the crest, we have: Faglum Karlsson, Inkelaar, Pinot, Bongiorno, Padun, Jorgenson, Min, cort Nielsen, Kwiatkowski, Carboni, Choi, and Frankiny. They have 23 seconds over the next group of 10 which immediately evaporates on the descent.
There’s 10km to go for the 32 now in the front group and half of those are downhill. That means we’ve got one final climb, Pra-Loup at 5.6km 7.3% the steepest of the day. These types of finishes normally benefit Areruya but who knows if his preliminary attack will make his legs heavy.
Gregaard attacks out of the base and leads the group for the first 2km of the climb, unable to gain any separation. Aular is right on his wheel.
Pogacar is the next to make an attack out of the switch-back but again he is covered by Aular. Padun and Morton are following in line this time and the entire group is still together. He brings them to 2km to go.
Under the 1km to go banner, Morton has leveled up at the front while Padun and Aranburu are both shaking back and forth. Latour seems sprightly as does Areruya. Pogacar might have burnt his matches too early.
Areruya is the next to put in the attack and this is likely the sprint to the line. He has about a bike over Morton who is still strong as well. Latour and now Padun has found more energy to keep them close. Still, the rest are starting to spread out although it is unclear whether they’ll be wide enough for gaps.
Areruya celebrates over the line! Morton is an incredibly close 2nd, but it is another success for the Rwandan.
Latour and Padun keep 3rd and 4th close enough to Areruya that they should not be concerned. Pogacar is 5th but he might be worried about the time - as should Aular and Galta in 6th and 7th.
The remaining top ten are Choi, Arndt and Kwiatkowski, but almost everyone who was at the bottom of the final climb together are here.
