Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/top_tdf_01.jpg

Bonjour et bienvenue à la grande boucle! We start this year’s edition in the western department Vendée, to be more precise at the Atlantic coast of Vendée. Even more precise the peloton will start above the Atlantic at the Passage du Gois which is a road that’s only accessible during low tide, so let’s hope the organizers have timed the stage right. The route leads mostly flat through the entire department, in general leading eastwards. The route doesn’t have any particular difficulties (apart from a potential swimming start) so it’s rated as a flat stage for the sprinters, though the last kilometers will lead up the Mont des Alouettes which is famous for having three windmills and a chapel on top. So we’ll see if the first wearer of the maillot jaune (and the polka dots and probably the green jersey too) will indeed be a sprinter or if a puncheur will take this honours. The organizers favour the sprinters with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu on top who’s not only the best sprinter at the start but also the best puncheur among the top sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0001.jpg

The first attackers of this Tour are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0002.jpg

They don’t get a gap as the peloton doesn’t want to let the counter attacks get away. While entering the Passage du Gois the two initial attackers are on the go again with some new counter attacks going on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0003.jpg

The Passage is over and after everything came together once again it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee on the attack for the third time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0004.jpg

This time he’s joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Klaris and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam and after shutting down the counter attacks the peloton seems content with this group of three.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0005.jpg

The break got a gap of up to 6’30, but it’s already down to 4’20 when they arrive at the only intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Gee takes the maximum points in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Sam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Klaris. This should also give them the GC positions 4 to 6 if they make it to the finish with the peloton. Speaking of which: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen take the remaining 2 and 1 points from there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0006.jpg

There’s not much happening for the next 80 km apart from the peloton slowly reducing the gap which now is at 1’13. But about 30 km to the finish there’s a split in the peloton. It’s not clear where it originated from as there’s no wind (and so no echelons too). We’ll see if it persists or if further splits will occur.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0007.jpg

With 13 km to go the break is caught and everything is back together. There were indeed some further splits but nothing that endured. But there’s still some potential for further unpleasant surprises as the ranks have thinned out around 30th to 40th place in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0008.jpg

In the end everything stayed together till the foot of the final climb up the Mont des Alouettes. It’s 4.3 km with 3.1 %, so the sprinters should be able to withstand the puncheurs. We indeed have them at the front, but the GC favourites are right behind them. It’ll probably be quite a messy sprint as with 3.5 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Pedersen is already the last lead out for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu with all the other sprinters bunched behind them. In fact the Dane is the last domestique left for any sprinter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0009.jpg

And he does his job well as there’s another split when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov couldn’t follow the wheel in front of him. He’s the only of the big names among the sprinters missing the first group of 19, while on the other hand there’s no GC threat in the first group so it probably will stay ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0010.jpg

With 2 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Pedersen is finally done but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koumpetsos took over the lead out duty, though he looks pretty spent as well. The rest of the peloton indeed took its legs up and is already a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis launched his sprint with 1.3 km to go. And under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu gets out of his slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0013.jpg

The Greek is soon done and has already fallen back to the end of the bunch. With 300 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu fades as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak and especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba (both on his right) seem to be the fastest right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0014.jpg

And it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba who takes the win! A big win for the Minions! On top he’ll only have to take off his dungarees to fit the requirements of the maillot jaune. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu complete the podium and will wear green and the polka dots tomorrow in representation of the Serbian with the Hungarian also taking over the white jersey (although it will actually be worn by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen who finished in 11th). It’s a huge day for South-Eastern European cycling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras come in in 4th to 6th place, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lander, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda complete the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0016.jpg

The peloton comes in 2 minutes after the first group. With some riders in between we’ll see if this gap will count towards the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Tour/PCM0018.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba for winning the stage and taking over the yellow jerseys! Nice to see the Minion celebrating (and his three small friends as well). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png ELCO - ABEA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank are tied for the team classification as they were the only teams with two riders in the front group(s). The peloton gets a gap of 1’59 which means the first 16 of today will probably fight for the GC lead at least till stage 4.
