Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 3
195.4km

It looks like the top 10 favorites all managed not to lose time yesterday, except for Aranburu. Thankfully, Aranburu should be supporting Galta although a 2nd GC rider is always helpful. Areruya leads the list as they head to the first hilltop finish today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/02.jpg

It’s the same scenario as yesterday, where the Green jersey wearer and 2nd on GC is allowed into the breakaway - only today that is Leung. He is joined by a much larger group today. All in all, it is 16 strong:
Leung, Vanbilsen, Bush, Andersen, Razumov, Juneau, Giuletti, Van den Berg, Quispe, Colombo, Sleen, Sutterlin, Hosek, Quaade, Schonberger, and Mathis.

The first climb of the day is a Cat 2 which means Mathis must score points in order not to be tied. Quispe is also here with previous points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/03.jpg

When they arrive, Colombo takes the top points in a very contested sprint. Hosek, Bush, Spleen, and Leung take the remaining points putting a tie at the top of the KOM standings.

The breakaway has a gap of 5:00 at the KOM point with approximately 145km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/04.jpg

The first sprint point comes at the decent of the 1st climb and the peloton seemed to want to pull the group back a bit after that. They realize 16 is a huge group. Still, at the sprint, we see Razumov beat the remaining breakaway riders ahead of Andersen and Giuletti. This mostly came down to who was at the front when they started their sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/05.jpg

The peloton has gone absolutely nuts bringing this breakaway back and the gap is only 2:00 now with 112km to go. In fact, you can see the 16 barely turning around the hills.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/06.jpg

At the start of climb 2, the breakaway is caught. That leaves 96km to the finish! We’ll see if another breakaway forms.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/07.jpg

Well, it seemed like they were caught anyway. The second the road goes uphill the breakaway escapes again and the peloton realizes they don’t want to push the pace. Schonberger and Hosek decide to take the climb alone while the rest of the OG 16 seem content together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/08.jpg

At the top, it is a 2 person battle for the top spots. Schonberger takes the win ahead of Hosek. Behind Sleen, Razumov and Andersen take those remaining points. The breakaway has split apart a bit but is overall coming together after the points. Now there are 11 up front. Missing are Leung, Vanbilsen, Quaade, Quispe and Sutterlin. Their gap to the peloton is back to 4:11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/09.jpg

Leung and Vanbilsen are finally returned to the peloton leaving just the 11 up front. The gap to the remaining is 3:36. Van den Berg is dropped from the front group on the major climb before the 2nd sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/10.jpg

The riders have traversed some hilly terrain between the KOM and the 2nd sprint, which causes a number of domestiques to fall off the pace in the peloton. Mathis is the 1st across the line ahead of Sleen and Andersen. Behind, the peloton is down to 65 riders with another 71 close behind. The major GC players are all in the main pack though. With 35km to go the gap is 1:05 between the leading 10 and the peloton. The gap in the peloton closes as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/11.jpg

The peloton is lining up with 20km to go. Galta and Areruya are already very close to the front, while Cedevita leads the pack for Pogacar. The breakaway still has 1:20 but that should go away as the final 10km are all uphill. Team Popo4ever, Xero, and Trans Looney Tunes all also take some turns.

They reach the 10km mark all in the same positions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/12.jpg

Sosa attacks right under the 10km banner and Padun tries to follow. After 500m they decide to stop their attempt because Pogacar is following.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/13.jpg

Padun is the next attacker after the group comes together and Sosa is right back on the wheel. Min joins them this time and Pogacar isn’t so excited to follow. 8km to go. The breakaway is still out front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/14.jpg

With 7.5km to go, Hosek has decided to drop the breakaway. Overall, they’re still together but Hosek thinks he can make time alone here. The attackers from the peloton seem posed to swallow them up though. By the 6.8km to go mark, everyone is together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/15.jpg

An unsuccessful Areruya attack spiced up the 6km to 5km to go area and now the riders are heading into the final bit. Cort Nielsen and Aular are the next to try to gain a gap and have 10 seconds on the field of 115 still together. Notably, Gonzalez Salas has finally been dropped in the leader’s jersey. Pogacar was asked to pace them back himself but couldn’t make the charge. Paez and Barthe do find success to claw back the pack which is now at 92 strong and 2.5km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/16.jpg

Arndt is the next attacker and he does great to get a small gap with 1.5km to go but he looks cooked. Barthe is still tasked with controlling the peloton for Latour. The gap is 8 seconds but the leading group now only has 69.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/17.jpg

There’s 1km to go and it’s relatively flat. Arndt is still in front but Morton has finally decided to show himself alongside Latour. Almost all you’d expect to be here in the top 20 riders are there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/18.jpg

600m to go and Latour is the front runner but Areruya is flying. Morton is doing his best to hold 3rd but there are no gaps. Galta is also coming strong for 4th. They seem to be the only ones likely to get a podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/19.jpg

Areruya is officially in 1st with 300m to go but its a tight race between him and Latour. Morton still a clear 3rd. Sosa is speeding through the group to now aim for a top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20.jpg

Areruya takes the hill top finish! 2nd place goes to Latour. Morton takes 3rd as expected from the final km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/21.jpg

Galta is 4th, Sosa a close 5th over Arndt in 6th. 7th is Cort Nielsen with Schlegel, Kwiatkowski and Choi filling out the top 10. Most of the group through about 45th should end on the same time unless they find a miniscule gap to count.
