Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 2
176.7 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/01.jpg

The riders will have a relatively simple stage today to get the road racing started in what should be a field sprint. The reporter is happy to have found his way back to France after a number of attempts being transported to Quebec. The favorites list is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/02.jpg

The breakaway attempts come relatively easily as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Mathis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas make the first attempt. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas could end up in yellow after today with the intermediate bonus sprints if he can get there quick enough with only 1 second back on our current GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe is another of those making early attacks to make the breakaway. The peloton does not seem interested in allowing anyone but those 3 escape and all three are able to come together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Mathis takes the intermediate sprint point ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas. Those 2 seconds mean pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas is the new unofficial head of the race. The gap of these three approaches 3:00 with 160km to go and is still growing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/04.jpg

We wait for another update until the 1st KOM of the race with 115km to go. The gap is 7:00 between the breakaway and the peloton after descending from 7:30. There isn’t a challenging run in, so the sprinters must assume this can be managed
The points are taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Mathis again, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas hides behind the signs to make sure people forget about his GC position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/05.jpg

Here in the peloton, three teams control the pace: Popo4ever p/b Morshynska, Cedevita and ISA - Hexacta. The pace speeds up there between the KOM and the 2nd intermediate to bring the gap into a more manageable deficit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/06.jpg

Nothing major here at the 2nd sprint point, as things go similarly as they have all day. However, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Mathis loses to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe, meaning pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe takes maximum points and seconds over the Kraftwerk Man Machine rider. They both takes the points over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas. Still, that’s 2 more seconds for the Assa Abloy TTer. The gap over the peloton is 4:20 with about 75km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/07.jpg

Our last climb of the day comes with just under 60km to go. This determines our first KOM jersey wearer! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Mathis is by far the best on the uphills taking the full points and the jersey! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas is gapped for 3rd but rejoins the breakaway. The gap is 3:20 to the peloton a few kilometers after the climb. No new teams are contributing behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/08.jpg

The chase has been boring as the same three teams bring the gap under 1 minute with 20km to go. The breakaway should not have much faith. Team Popo4ever p/b Morshynska is clearly putting in the most effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/09.jpg

10km to go and the breakaway is basically in the palm of the peloton. They aren’t quite caught yet, but ISA - Hexacta are the new team taking full control of the chase. At 9km to go, the breakaway finally does join the main group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/10.jpg

5km to go and they’re all lining up! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung has positioned himself near the front as have all of the sprinters. ISA - Hexacta with the main leadout train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/11.jpg

2.5km to go and the ISA - Hexacta train is working great for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras so far. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic is lined up on the outside with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Dekker on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is on the wheel of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras (which is an interesting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Choice) with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski following the Rwandan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Cherkasov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Van Lerberghe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Petit are the others up front in the top 10 places.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/12.jpg

They’re crossing under the flamme rouge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras still has his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Paez’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya has decided to go for the sprint alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Räim is also in full sprint while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Golovash is trying to lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski on the other side. This could be one interesting sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras is out from his leadout’s wheel now and still has the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic is coming strong but might get blocked as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Paez falls back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Van Lerberghe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Räim are the next line ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij. Unpictured, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Bennett is about 16th wheel but flying.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras couldn’t quite break the streak of lead-outs missing the win. It’s a win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic! 2nd for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Contreras. 3rd goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Van Lerberghe, 4th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij, and 5th to GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya. 6th is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Petit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Dekker ends up 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Bennett closing quickly for 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski for 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Granigan for 10th.

Stage win goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic after a gutsy sprint! Unseen, there’s a gap in the peloton after the first 74 riders and it is a bit one. 1:31 gets added to the remaining times. Some managers will be screaming at their GC leaders after today.
