Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 1
6.6km Prologue

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/01.jpg

The first stage of the Criterium du Dauphine Libere starts with a 6.6km prologue. It’s a great way to create some small gaps and show us who can make a difference on a short course. There are no time checks, so we’ll catch who we can expect to make a difference.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/02.jpg

The first competent prologue rider of the day is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu. The fastest time is now set at 7:34.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Sipos is the next best rider to hit the race course and he sets a new best time as well. The new time to beat is 7:27. What a nice Hungarian NC jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Ocampo is the last of the 1st round of riders to be compcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Petitive. He finishes in a preliminary 3rd place at 7:29

Now wait a second, that means someone else came through… and that rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin who sets the new best time! Undetected, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin sneaks past the camera and goes 7:21! We aren’t sure how we missed on the stage favorites, but this time might stick for the whole day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung is not making it past the camera’s unnoticed though as the prologue specialist wears the Hong Kong NC jersey. It’s a great ride for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung and his time is 7:18! A new best!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Razumov is another strong rider for the stage and he comes up just short. 7:22 to sit 4 seconds off the lead. This should remain a top 10 time we believe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Herregodts is right behind on the road and in the standings. Prelim 4th for the Belgian in 7:25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Howson is the next of the favorites to come through the course. He can’t quite challenge pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung, but he finds 2nd place in 7:20! A great ride for Cedevita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Prado is one of the more interesting riders to come through in the first half, with strong prologue skills and satisfactory climbing for a domestique. He slots in 6th with a 7:25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/10.jpg

The former Ukranian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Golovash will also ride for a good time. There’s a slight incline in the final 2km of the race, and that’s tough for him. His time is good for 5th at 7;23/

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/11.jpg

It’s a close-up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Schomber’s rear today, as he will show that to many with today’s results as such a good prologue rider. 2nd for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Schomber in 7:20. Sadly, he knows he’ll be viewing the behinds of many for much of the rest of the race, as he typically falls behind early as the road tips up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Jungels is the last of the first half to contest the top 10. It’s a decent result for him. 7th - 6 seconds back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/13.jpg

Here are the standings through the half way point. We’ll check in with the GC riders and anyone really challenging for the win in the 2nd half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Fernandes made the projected favorites list, so we check in on his progress with 2.5 rounds of riders to go. He comes in behind the expected times in 10th at 7:26.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/15.jpg

Another favorite for a strong result is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas. He’s a master in any solo race and he creates much more of a challenge. His time: 7:19! Just 1 second off the lead and a new 2nd place time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/16.jpg

With just the race favorites to go, we present the preliminary standings. The stage should be generally set, but the GC gaps will definitely matter now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson is likely the only one likely to challenge the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kukrle does get the favorite status for Moser and he comes storming to the line. 7th! 4 seconds off the lead in 7:22.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Roson is the next team leader but his TT skills are weak at best. His time: 8:15

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson will be a weak GC threat here in a field with such strong climbers, but he will be able to hold his own in this prologue. Time: 7:35

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/20.jpg

The Bolivian NC jersey sits beautifully on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Campero’s shoulders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Campero does not sit quite as beautifully on the TT bike as he struggles today: 7:44

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Guldhammer is next one to cross the line. 7:44 for him as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Schlegel also has strong climbing chops and he will want to stay in contention here. A tougher day for the Czech. 37 seconds back in 7:55

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa is strong in mountain and hill stages, but today, he’s off the pace. 35seconds back in 7:53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Min is another great challenger for the GC top 10, but not the stage. Min earns a time of 7:52. The GC group is overall pretty tight so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot is another strong climber who doesn’t appreciate the TT bike. 7:57 is his time, managing to hold the gap under 40 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson is ready for his run at the best times though as he can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot cross the line. A headstart on his GC competitors is definitely on the cards for the Swedish. It’s 9th on the stage, just 6 seconds back! 7:24!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Inkelaar is not quite so strong, but arrives with a respectable time for some trying to explode uphill. 7:57.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Padun is in the same boat as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Inkelaar but ready for even more challenging mountain attempts. Today it’s 7:54 to sit in that major GC group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Aular should be stronger than most of the previous GC threats to finish and is. Just 24 seconds back for 7:42.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is a GC threat in any race he attempts and this is not exception. He comes in with a time of 7:55 in order to hold position heading into the mountains. The 7:54-7:58 range is very popular today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Galta jumps in front of even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Aular in the GC with a great ride. 21 seconds back in 7:39! The Norwegian will be very happy we assume.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/32.jpg

The Cedevita star is flying today towards a great time. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson beats him of the GC contenders. 12 seconds back is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Pogacar’s 7:30. Only 6 back of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Choi is another good prologue rider for this group of GC riders. 7:32 and 14 seconds back is a more than satisfactory result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/34.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour is the penultimate rider and sets a good time as well. 7:33. This GC group is really standing out from the 2nd tier. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Latour will be satisfied with that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/35.jpg

There’s no denying that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton is the clear GC favorite and he starts the race in the final position because of it. He doesn’t disappoint. 17 seconds back of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Morton is sitting right with his GC compatriots and can even let them control for a bit with that time of 7:35.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S1/36.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung takes the win for Hong Kong and King Power!
