Stage 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/P.jpg

One more stage until the GC contenders are let loose, but this one’s for the sprinters again. It’s far from a pan-flat day though, so the sprinters who struggle uphill will have to grind their teeth. We also have enough mountain points that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Dunne’s lead in the KoM competition isn’t entirely secure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/01.jpg

It’s a struggle to find today’s group of the day. After initial attemps by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Romo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Seibeb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Gilmore and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates were unsuccesful, KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Dunne goes on the attack alongside his biggest rival pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Salazar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Tanfield and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Bergstrom Frisk. But they don’t get far either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Romo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Seibeb gave it another go with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Mosca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Plowright, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Zegklis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Louvel in what seemed like a promising move at first, but they weren’t succesful either. Familiar faces pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Neilands, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Frison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Salazar tried their luck but remained unsuccesful.

After 35 kilometers, another attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Seibeb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Zegklis, this time joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Januskevicius and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Pelikan, finally brought some distance between themselves and the peloton, but more riders are underway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/03.jpg

It took almost another 15 kilometers for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Magnusson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates to catch up, but eventually they did to form a seven men group, 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Romo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Salazar both tried multiple times to make the jump to the front, but remained unsuccessful, which means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Dunne’s mountain jersey is safe for now, as none of the escapees have any mountain points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/04.jpg

The Widhaus is a tough climb, 8.8 kilometers at 7%. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Januskevicius, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov and especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Seibeb, there are some pretty solid climbers in this group, but they don’t force the issue and so weaker climbers like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Pelikan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates manage to hang on all the way to the summit. The latter even wins the full 10 KoM points. Despite their moderate pace, the gap to the peloton has increased to almost 6 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/06.jpg

The breakaway has reached the Kircheberg, which is crossed three times today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov wins the sprint and with 14 points, he’s now 9th in the mountain classification. Winning both remaining KoM sprints would move him up to 5th, but that’ll be no easy feat. Their lead on the peloton has started to decrease significantly already and stands at around 3’50.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/07.jpg

By the second crossing of the Kircheberg, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov takes maximum points again, that’s down to 3’10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png ZARA, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Colombini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Puma are once again the driving forces in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov also collects 10 points at the two intermediate sprints so far, which alongside yesterday’s 8th place finish brings him up to 18. It’s unlikely that that’ll ultimately matter, but he’s at the very least making a good case for the most active rider of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/09.jpg

The breakaway make it to the top of the final climb of the day with a lead of 1’25 over the peloton. Here, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Seibeb finally shows his climbing supremacy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov goes empty handed. 27 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Zegklis are out of energy and are dropped by the rest of the breakaway by the time they reach the final intermediate sprint. The group still has 55 seconds on a splintered peloton – with 15 kilometers to go, they have an actual shot at this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/11.jpg

The chasers don’t look very fresh anymore and fewer and fewer domestiques are left in this group of 51 with most of the top sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gibbons and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Rodenberg are among the 30 riders in the second group, they would soon catch up again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Stash, however, are out of the running another two groups behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen is trying his best, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter already in his wheel, who are in turn followed by some of the top sprinters. The gap remains steady at 50 seconds though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Conci and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon take over, DK Zalgiris try to set something up for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Losch here, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan eagerly tries to get in on that. They cut the gap to 30 seconds with 7 kilometers to go, but it’s all very messy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/14.jpg

But just ahead of the 5km banner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Rohendi bring the breakaway back. This should give the sprinters enough time to regroup, but there aren’t many domestiques left with enough energy to set them up properly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/15.jpg

Indeed, with 2 kilometers to go there are no sprint trains to speak of. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Conci is in the wind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen right behind him and then all the other sprinters bunched together behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan are closest to the front, yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh isn’t in a great position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/16.jpg

The finishing straight rises very gently, so going too early might be fatal, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen feels like he has no other option. With a strong initial burst, he creates a small gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter tries to hold his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen looks incredibly strong here and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter has brought a couple of bike lengths between himself and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard, too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Rodenberg are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/18.jpg

The final corner comes with 500 meters to go and still no one is really close to the leading two. With a stage win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen would take over the lead in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/19.jpg

But here comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter! He is about to draw level, just 200 meters to go and it looks like it’s between those two, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Rodenberg fighting for third!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/20.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Max Kanter takes it! Him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen were clearly the strongest today, but the German times his sprint slightly better and makes it consecutive stage wins for Puma! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan scores a nice podium place for Indosat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Rodenberg manages to hold on to finish 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard at the line to take 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki is 7th …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S4/22.jpg

… then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh complete the Top 10. The Brit will remain in yellow for a fourth (and final) day tomorrow.

The points classification changes hands again though, and perhaps for the final time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter leads it now, 2 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen and 6 ahead of his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas. It’s certainly not impossible that one of the GC riders collects more than the German’s 45 points on the final three stages, but it’s far from a given either.

Speaking of, the GC contenders will indeed jump into action on tomorrow’s mountain top finish. See you then!
