Stage 4
One more stage until the GC contenders are let loose, but this one’s for the sprinters again. It’s far from a pan-flat day though, so the sprinters who struggle uphill will have to grind their teeth. We also have enough mountain points that Dunne’s lead in the KoM competition isn’t entirely secure.
It’s a struggle to find today’s group of the day. After initial attemps by Curley, Romo, Seibeb, Gilmore and Yates were unsuccesful, KoM leader Dunne goes on the attack alongside his biggest rival Salazar, Tanfield and Bergstrom Frisk. But they don’t get far either.
Romo and Seibeb gave it another go with Mosca, Plowright, Zegklis and Louvel in what seemed like a promising move at first, but they weren’t succesful either. Familiar faces Neilands, Frison and Salazar tried their luck but remained unsuccesful.
After 35 kilometers, another attack by Seibeb and Zegklis, this time joined by Januskevicius and Pelikan, finally brought some distance between themselves and the peloton, but more riders are underway.
It took almost another 15 kilometers for Robov, Magnusson and Yates to catch up, but eventually they did to form a seven men group, 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. Romo and Salazar both tried multiple times to make the jump to the front, but remained unsuccessful, which means that Dunne’s mountain jersey is safe for now, as none of the escapees have any mountain points.
The Widhaus is a tough climb, 8.8 kilometers at 7%. With Januskevicius, Robov and especially Seibeb, there are some pretty solid climbers in this group, but they don’t force the issue and so weaker climbers like Pelikan and Yates manage to hang on all the way to the summit. The latter even wins the full 10 KoM points. Despite their moderate pace, the gap to the peloton has increased to almost 6 minutes.
The breakaway has reached the Kircheberg, which is crossed three times today. Robov wins the sprint and with 14 points, he’s now 9th in the mountain classification. Winning both remaining KoM sprints would move him up to 5th, but that’ll be no easy feat. Their lead on the peloton has started to decrease significantly already and stands at around 3’50.
By the second crossing of the Kircheberg, where Robov takes maximum points again, that’s down to 3’10. ZARA, Colombini and Puma are once again the driving forces in the peloton.
Robov also collects 10 points at the two intermediate sprints so far, which alongside yesterday’s 8th place finish brings him up to 18. It’s unlikely that that’ll ultimately matter, but he’s at the very least making a good case for the most active rider of the day.
The breakaway make it to the top of the final climb of the day with a lead of 1’25 over the peloton. Here, Seibeb finally shows his climbing supremacy and Robov goes empty handed. 27 kilometers to go.
Robov and Zegklis are out of energy and are dropped by the rest of the breakaway by the time they reach the final intermediate sprint. The group still has 55 seconds on a splintered peloton – with 15 kilometers to go, they have an actual shot at this.
The chasers don’t look very fresh anymore and fewer and fewer domestiques are left in this group of 51 with most of the top sprinters. Bogdanovics, Gibbons and Rodenberg are among the 30 riders in the second group, they would soon catch up again. Mareczko and Stash, however, are out of the running another two groups behind.
Johannessen is trying his best, with Steimle and Kanter already in his wheel, who are in turn followed by some of the top sprinters. The gap remains steady at 50 seconds though.
Conci and Moscon take over, DK Zalgiris try to set something up for Losch here, and Nur Hasan eagerly tries to get in on that. They cut the gap to 30 seconds with 7 kilometers to go, but it’s all very messy.
But just ahead of the 5km banner, Moscon and Rohendi bring the breakaway back. This should give the sprinters enough time to regroup, but there aren’t many domestiques left with enough energy to set them up properly.
Indeed, with 2 kilometers to go there are no sprint trains to speak of. Conci is in the wind, Thijssen right behind him and then all the other sprinters bunched together behind them. Kanter, Howard, Afewerki and Nur Hasan are closest to the front, yellow jersey Kennaugh isn’t in a great position.
The finishing straight rises very gently, so going too early might be fatal, but Thijssen feels like he has no other option. With a strong initial burst, he creates a small gap. Kanter tries to hold his wheel.
Thijssen looks incredibly strong here and Kanter has brought a couple of bike lengths between himself and Howard, too. Bogdanovics, Nur Hasan and Rodenberg are next.
The final corner comes with 500 meters to go and still no one is really close to the leading two. With a stage win, Thijssen would take over the lead in the GC!
But here comes Kanter! He is about to draw level, just 200 meters to go and it looks like it’s between those two, with Howard, Nur Hasan and Rodenberg fighting for third!
And Max Kanter takes it! Him and Thijssen were clearly the strongest today, but the German times his sprint slightly better and makes it consecutive stage wins for Puma! Nur Hasan scores a nice podium place for Indosat.
Rodenberg manages to hold on to finish 4th, Hayakawa pips Howard at the line to take 5th. Afewerki is 7th …
… then Kalaba, Page and Kennaugh complete the Top 10. The Brit will remain in yellow for a fourth (and final) day tomorrow.
The points classification changes hands again though, and perhaps for the final time. Kanter leads it now, 2 points ahead of Thijssen and 6 ahead of his teammate Madouas. It’s certainly not impossible that one of the GC riders collects more than the German’s 45 points on the final three stages, but it’s far from a given either.
Speaking of, the GC contenders will indeed jump into action on tomorrow’s mountain top finish. See you then!
