Stage 1
Let’s get going, shall we? One for the sprinters today, who will take the first yellow jersey of the race?
Broxham is the first attacker of the day and he quickly gets a gap of almost a minute withouth anyone else apparently willing to join on this dark and rainy day.
That changes after a while, and it’s his teammate Curley who catches up and brings Boros with him. Glanbia have the numbers advantage, but the Moser – Sygic rider is the best puncheur of the three and therefore the favorite for the KoM sprints.
At the intermediate sprint, though, it’s Curley who has the upper hand by a sliver.
The Côte de Baussan is the first classified climb of the day and Boros shows his supremacy. Glanbia tried to get the better of him with an early attack by Curley, but it wasn’t enough. The Irish collects 4 points crossing the line second. The trio have around 5 minutes on the peloton led by Puma and Colombini.
The approach to the Côte d’Essertes is much flatter, but Boros adjusts and takes this one from the front. Curley mounted a late challenge but just fell short.
Curley finally gets the better of Boros on the Côte de Settens, but he would’ve needed an assist from his teammate to tie for the KoM lead. As it is, Boros will wear the jersey with a score of 13-11. The breakaway’s lead has dropped to just over 3 minutes with 55 kilometers to go.
Curley rounds out his day with a decisive win at the second intermediate sprint. If he finishes on the same time as today’s winner, he’ll be third in the GC and leading the young riders classification. Unless, of course … he can win the whole stage himself? 2 minutes left, 32 kilometers to go.
He is clearly the strongest of the three at least on flat roads today, and so Curley remains alone out front as his two companions are caught by the peloton. ZARA – Irizar have joined the aforementioned teams in leading the pursuit.
Curley with a valiant ride today but he’s caught with 15 kilometers to go. The road rises for a bit now at around 3% and will do so again close to the finish, but then the final few kilometers are downhill.
Inside the final 4 kilometers, the pace is brutal, but also, everyone’s all over the place! Zimmermann is leading the way with Afewerki, Page and Kanter following him already! Madouas and Steimle try to get ahead of them to form a more coherent sprint train. Aside from them, it’s almost exclusively the top sprinters making up the first 15 or so positions of the peloton.
2.8 kilometers to go and Puma have their things in order, but how fresh is Kanter at this point? They’re about to head into the downhill, so that should help at least. ZARA have kept themselves out of the wind and only now come to the front with Thijssen following Thomas and Borges.
Afewerki, Stash, Kennaugh and Silva form the first line behind Page, who’s found the immediate slipstream of the Puma train.
Borges and Madouas have held the lead for a long time and it’s only now with 1.4 kilometers to go that Thomas and Steimle take over. The gradient is at -1.7% here.
Steimle still leads but Kanter is coming out of his wheel now with 700 meters to go. So does Thijssen, who almost has Kennaugh crashing into him.
Kanter struggles to get around his teammate, but Steimle might just hold on for himself, the downhill is certainly helping him. But Kennaugh is quicker than both Puma riders right now, as are Thijssen, Bogdanovics, Afewerki and Silva. Page is also still doing well.
200 meters to go. Kennaugh has passed Kanter and Thijssen, but Steimle still has almost a full bike length of a lead.
The stage is some 70 meters too long for Steimle, who crumbles and is passed by Kennaugh, but Kanter is finding a second breath and is accelerating again!
But it’s just barely not enough. Kennaugh has the best timing and the strongest legs, he wins while Kanter and Thijssen still make good use of their sprint trains and finish on the podium.
Afewerki mounts a late charge to finish 4th ahead of a surprisingly strong Silva, Losch and Page, who finishes 7th on home soil.
Bogdanovics, Stash and Howard complete the Top 10 ahead of Steimle. Puma ultimately ended up with a good result, but they really need to get their things in order for the second sprint stage, which won’t have such a downhill to support them.
Kennaugh of course now leads the GC ahead of his two rivals Kanter and Thijssen, and the latter also takes the white jersey. ( Curley was unfortunately dropped from the peloton in the finale). That is subject to change though in tomorrow’s hill stage to Lucerne. See you there!
