Stage 1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/P.jpg

Let’s get going, shall we? One for the sprinters today, who will take the first yellow jersey of the race?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Broxham is the first attacker of the day and he quickly gets a gap of almost a minute withouth anyone else apparently willing to join on this dark and rainy day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/02.jpg

That changes after a while, and it’s his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley who catches up and brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Boros with him. Glanbia have the numbers advantage, but the Moser – Sygic rider is the best puncheur of the three and therefore the favorite for the KoM sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/03.jpg

At the intermediate sprint, though, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley who has the upper hand by a sliver.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/04.jpg

The Côte de Baussan is the first classified climb of the day and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Boros shows his supremacy. Glanbia tried to get the better of him with an early attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley, but it wasn’t enough. The Irish collects 4 points crossing the line second. The trio have around 5 minutes on the peloton led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Puma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Colombini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/06.jpg

The approach to the Côte d’Essertes is much flatter, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Boros adjusts and takes this one from the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley mounted a late challenge but just fell short.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley finally gets the better of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Boros on the Côte de Settens, but he would’ve needed an assist from his teammate to tie for the KoM lead. As it is, Boros will wear the jersey with a score of 13-11. The breakaway’s lead has dropped to just over 3 minutes with 55 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley rounds out his day with a decisive win at the second intermediate sprint. If he finishes on the same time as today’s winner, he’ll be third in the GC and leading the young riders classification. Unless, of course … he can win the whole stage himself? 2 minutes left, 32 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/09.jpg

He is clearly the strongest of the three at least on flat roads today, and so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley remains alone out front as his two companions are caught by the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png ZARA – Irizar have joined the aforementioned teams in leading the pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley with a valiant ride today but he’s caught with 15 kilometers to go. The road rises for a bit now at around 3% and will do so again close to the finish, but then the final few kilometers are downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/11.jpg

Inside the final 4 kilometers, the pace is brutal, but also, everyone’s all over the place! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann is leading the way with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter following him already! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle try to get ahead of them to form a more coherent sprint train. Aside from them, it’s almost exclusively the top sprinters making up the first 15 or so positions of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/12.jpg

2.8 kilometers to go and Puma have their things in order, but how fresh is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter at this point? They’re about to head into the downhill, so that should help at least. ZARA have kept themselves out of the wind and only now come to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thomas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Borges.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Stash, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Silva form the first line behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page, who’s found the immediate slipstream of the Puma train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Borges and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas have held the lead for a long time and it’s only now with 1.4 kilometers to go that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thomas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle take over. The gradient is at -1.7% here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle still leads but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter is coming out of his wheel now with 700 meters to go. So does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen, who almost has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh crashing into him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter struggles to get around his teammate, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle might just hold on for himself, the downhill is certainly helping him. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh is quicker than both Puma riders right now, as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Silva. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page is also still doing well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/16.jpg

200 meters to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh has passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle still has almost a full bike length of a lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/17.jpg

The stage is some 70 meters too long for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle, who crumbles and is passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter is finding a second breath and is accelerating again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/18.jpg

But it’s just barely not enough. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh has the best timing and the strongest legs, he wins while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen still make good use of their sprint trains and finish on the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki mounts a late charge to finish 4th ahead of a surprisingly strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Silva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Losch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Page, who finishes 7th on home soil.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Suisse/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Stash and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard complete the Top 10 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle. Puma ultimately ended up with a good result, but they really need to get their things in order for the second sprint stage, which won’t have such a downhill to support them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh of course now leads the GC ahead of his two rivals pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen, and the latter also takes the white jersey. (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Curley was unfortunately dropped from the peloton in the finale). That is subject to change though in tomorrow’s hill stage to Lucerne. See you there!
