Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 is the first of the two mountain stages here in Vancouver. It finishes with an HC climb to Upper Joffre Lake. Before that a relatively benign 182k, only a mild Cat 1 and a Cat 3 prior to the finishing climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello top the favorites list. If he wins the stage he will most likely once again have all 3 jerseys for which he is qualified.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/favs.jpg

11k gone. Crabbe don’t seem totally happy with the breakaway, they have already brought back some attackers and are still chasing. At the front there is a group of 10 with a lead of 52 seconds. Between are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Marte (32 seconds ahead), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Watts (19 seconds) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Costagli (12 seconds).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/01.jpg

Soon after Crabbe decide they can live with 13 escapees and ease off and the three chasers come together. But with 40k gone they haven’t been able to bridge up and still trail the leading 10 by 41 seconds. The peloton is 3’16 behind them. In the lead group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Wilksch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Drouin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Chevrier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Bourgoyne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Knotten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Bablidze, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Kelly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Morales Ortega. 1.8k to the top of the Cat 3 climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/02.jpg

Sirironnachai just edges Kelly for the points with Chevrier in third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/03.jpg

At the first sprint Kelly leads the way. He is the best on GC in the break at 52 seconds. The three chasers have not been able to reach the front and are now over 1’30 back. Peloton is at 6’25 with Crabbe on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/04.jpg

88k to go for the break as they start the Cat 1 climb which is 8.1k at 6%. The peloton at 6’18. Crabbe controlling the gap now. The 3 chasers have been caught by the peloton leaving just these 10 out front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/05.jpg

700 meters from the top Chevrier launches the first attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Bourgoyne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Knotten and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/06.jpg

Chevrier gaps the others to take maximum points. Bablidze and Morales Ortega are the next two across. Peloton at 6’03. Chevrier has 18 points giving him the virtual KOM but Chiarello needs to score just 2 at the finish to take it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Rochas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Armirali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Weinstein lead the peloton across the top of the climb. Chiarello looking isolated. The gap is 7’42. Drouin also dropped from the break although it looks like he and Sirironnachai should be able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/08.jpg

Kelly also wins the second sprint. Only Bourgoyne has been unable to rejoin the leaders. Crabbe is back at the front of the peloton and has the lead down to 6’47. 45k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/09.jpg

25k to go. Crabbe have run out of workers again and Bordeaux (Rochas, Weinstein, Agirrebeitia and Talacka), Team Würth (Schelling, Magnussen, Dumoulin) and Manada (Murillo) are at the front. Gap is 5’19, Bourgoyne has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai launches an attack just before the final climb and drops Drouin, Wilksch and Knotten. So 6 riders reach the climb together. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Chevrier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Bablidze, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Kelly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sirironnachai, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Morales Ortega. They have 44 seconds on Wilksch and Knotten, 1’28 on Drouin and 4’06 on the peloton where Bordeaux have been doing most of the work although Simba Cement is helping now. The final climb is 11.8k at 11.6%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/11.jpg

Sirironnachai attacks again with just over 10k to climb, only Chevrier responds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/12.jpg

The front 6 come back together and Bablidze and Morales Ortega attack. Peloton at 3’54 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Weinstein on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/13.jpg

8k to climb. Chevrier has bridged up to the two attackers. They have 46 seconds on the three chasers and 3’05 on the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke has launched the first attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mannion and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello go with Lunke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Iturria shuts them down. Then after a brief lull pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mannion has another go and opens up a 31 second gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Grmay brings the peloton back up to Mannion and they catch the three chasers from the break. Only 3 left out front and they have just 1’32 with over 7k still to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/16.jpg

Grmay doesn’t relent and grinds his way up to the front three. He has Bablidze as an ally in this group. Mannion is 50 seconds behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Manfredi, who tried to follow him, is at 1’09 and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Schelling-led peloton is at 1’25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/17.jpg

Despite some work from Bablidze an attack from Lunke (in polka dots) almost brings the peloton up to the leaders. The peloton is just 29 strong with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Rochas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Rhim among those dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/18.jpg

Under the 5k banner Bablidze pulls off and Grmay takes over the pacemaking. Only Chevrier still with him. Lunke leading the peloton 24 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/19.jpg

4.2k, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello puts in a dig putting an end to Grmay’s time out front. 9 riders have pulled clear, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Iturria the big name missing. Bordeaux did a lot of work for him to be dropped this far out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/20.jpg

Chiarello briefly shakes them all except Lunke but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Roglic drags the the other 7 back to him. The leaders are Chiarello, Lunke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Grmay, Roglic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png O'Connor, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mannion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Elosegui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Chevrier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Canty. The next group is 55 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/21.jpg

3k to go and Chiarello, Lunke, Grmay, Roglic and O’Connor are 29 seconds clear of the other 4. A chase group of 16 is another 32 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/22.jpg

2k to ride. Lunke looks stronger than Chiarello but he has not tested him yet. He only needs 2 seconds to take the race lead. The chase group has caught the other 4 and that 20-rider group is 35 seconds behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/23.jpg

Still no action as they reach the 1k banner. Chase group at 49 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/24.jpg

700 meters. Lunke and Chiarello start the sprint to the finish. O’Connor looks in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/25.jpg

Chiarello cracks first and Lunke goes to the front. Maybe the lack of support hurting Chiarello here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/26.jpg

200 meters, Lunke has a gap, although he just needs bonus seconds to take the lead. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mannion, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ciccone are leading the chase group. They are 25 seconds down on O’Connor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke celebrates a stage win, he will also be the new GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello has to accept 2nd and a 24-second second deficit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Grmay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Roglic take 3rd and 4th on the same time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png O'Connor will get 5th, 46 seconds down. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Elosegui has moved up to challenge Mannion for 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mannion (+1’13) holds of for 6th, he looked strong today. Then on the same time it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Elosegui. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ciccone (+1’24), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Manfredi (+1’24) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Canty (+1’33) wrap up the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S4/30.jpg

It is Lunke who comes closer to 3 jerseys. He takes over the KOM lead by 2 points and ties Chiarello in points competition but loses it on placings. Elosegui is still the best young rider, 38 seconds up on his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Schelling. Simba Cement take over the team’s lead ahead of Podium Ambition.

In the GC Lunke leads Chiarello by 30 seconds and Roglic by 1’04. Back to sprinting tomorrow.
