Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/mg_franceville_02.jpg

The Favourites for the stage are roughly the same as yesterday. With no time gaps awarded yet they are also the favourites for the GC. The decisive part of the race will likely be the more than 20 km long cobbled sector to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0020.jpg

This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Mundle attacked right from the start. He was joined by seven riders, including some well-known names from yesterday’s break. His companions are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Stavrakakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Christensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Robeet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Papanov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Laas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Hollmann. They’re chased by another of yesterday’s escapees in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Chen who’s 52’’ behind and 1’39 in front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0021.jpg

The Chinese was never able to make it to the front and is finally reeled in after a 50 km solo ride. With 100 km to go the break has a lead of 3’37.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0022.jpg

There’s not much happening for the next couple of kilometers, but then the cobbles take its toll as the break crumbles apart and only the stronger cobblers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Stavrakakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Robeet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Hollmann stay in front. They still have a lead of about 3’20 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0023.jpg

On the next long cobbled sector pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Hollmann is dropped too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0024.jpg

The two leaders sprint for the points and seconds at the first intermediate sprint of the stage with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Stavrakakis winning the fight. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Robeet is second with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Hollmann getting the final points nearly two minutes later. The gap from the leaders to the peloton stays at about 3’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0025.jpg

Another cobbled sector later the young Greek is on his own as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Robeet loses contact as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0026.jpg

And the pattern continues as the next cobbled sector sees the break reduce by another rider, resulting in the peloton reeling all the escapees in. Thus the second intermediate sprint isn’t contested with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sulimov taking the maximum points in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Malecki. Especially the 4 points (and seconds) for the Dane could be crucial for the GC and points classification. The chasing results in a crumbling peloton with even some better cobblers already losing contact, most notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Ferreira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Debesay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0027.jpg

The first attack from a favourite came from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per even before the final cobbled sector began. With 23 km to go a group of favourites is back together and in the final sector which won’t end until the finish line. Among those who missed the group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Vanbilsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Sulimov and most notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0028.jpg

21 km to go and the race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Gamper loses contact! But he’s not the only one as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg struggles too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Jacobs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Van Keirsbulck were gone a bit earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0029.jpg

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts and once again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per attack at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0030.jpg

The attackers get a sizeable gap and now the World Champion himself is chasing them on his own. Meanwhile the pace of the remaining group is too high for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck doesn’t look too good either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0031.jpg

17 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski makes it to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per is alone 12’’ in front of those two. Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Tiller lost contact to the chasers while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Stallaert punctures and will have a hard time coming back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0032.jpg

Only half a kilometer later there aren’t any real groups to speak of anymore! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Daniel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke lost contact next, shortly afterwards followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev. This means the chasers are down to 4 riders: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Spengler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Altur and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Senechal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0033.jpg

With 13 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Spengler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Altur are gone too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen has made contact with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Senechal wasn’t quite able to follow this move and looks spent. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per still is some seconds ahead of his chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0034.jpg

The front four are together now, behind them it’s more or less everyone on his own. We’ll stay with the leaders to the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0035.jpg

4 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts is done.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0036.jpg

We’re under the red kite and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen is dropped! He is the only one of the front three who gathered some bonus seconds, but if he finishes with a gap that won’t help him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0037.jpg

And with 700 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski accelerates - or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per slows down – the result being the same: the World Champion will take the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0038.jpg

And he does indeed! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen finish in 2nd and 3rd place. Behind them the others finish pretty much one by one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0039.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Gerts finishes 4th in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Senechal, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Spengler edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Altur for 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0040.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Stallaert makes it back to 8th after his puncture. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke complete the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Daniel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen are 11th and 12th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck for 13th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Tiller finishes in 15th. The former leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Gamper comes in in 17th behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/PCM0041.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski for winning the stage and the GC!
