Stage 1
The Favourites are naturally the top cobblers in the race and with Pedersen being one of the best sprinters too it’s clear he’s the top favourite. It’s surprising to not see Stallaert on this list too as his skillset is pretty similar to the one of the Dane.
Gamper attacks right from the start and gets a gap, resulting in some more attacks to follow his effort. Those include (among others) Stavrakakis and Kasperkiewicz and the peloton seems willing to let those groups go. We’ll have a closer look when everything has settled down a bit.
With the first cobbled sectors under the wheels we have a break of 14 riders with a gap of 2’22 to the peloton. The break consists of
Erdenebat, Marryatt and Yates
Chen and Ghani
Affonso
Gamper
Hollmann
Juul-Jensen
Kasperkiewicz
Monk
Orlov
Pluimers
Stavrakakis
With 150 km to go the break has a gap of 4’44. The peloton can’t let the gap increase too much as there are some really good cobblers in the break, most of all the three riders mentioned earlier, but Monk and Ghani aren’t bad either.
With the next cobbled sectors done the break is down to nine riders as the weaker cobblers Affonso, Chen, Marryatt and Orlov were dropped and are now about a minute behind. Erdenebat is even further behind and nearer to the peloton than the front. The peloton is still about 4 and a half minutes behind the front.
The chasers never made it back to the front and were caught on the next paved sectors. With 70 km to go the gap from the break to the peloton is down to 2’30.
And for some reasons some of the favourites attack from the pack shortly afterwards. Anderberg, Gerts and Teunissen get a small gap.
25 km later the three have increased their gap to 38’’ while the next paved sectors are tackled. The break is still 1’32 ahead of them.
What’s that? Kasperkiewicz lost contact to the rest of the break and is nearly back in the chasing group though he’s among the favourites for this stage! There’s no hint of a puncture or the like.
With 30 km to go the three chasers are finally brought back by the peloton. Kasperkiewicz and Pluimers are 52’’ in front, the rest of the break is another 40’’ away.
18 km to go and the break is entering the first of the last three paved sectors. Kasperkiewicz made it back to the front but the gap is down to 42’’.
And now it’s Pedersen on the attack.
He never gets a serious gap but as a result the break is caught – except for the initial attacker Gamper who followed an attack from Senechal in the process of the catch. The two have 18’’ to the pack with 4.3 km to go.
And the gap of the two increases in the very twisted and technical final. With 1.3 km to go they have 25’’ seconds on Pedersen and Spengler who managed to get away from the pack and have another 27’’ to the rest of the favourites.
Up front Gamper seems to have more in the tank than Senechal as he already has a big gap with 500 m to go. Behind Pedersen still seems to be strong as he has left Spengler behind. The peloton seems just to fight for 5th place.
And the Austrian takes the win! Senechal and Pedersen take the other podium spot. Spengler also manages to stay ahead of the peloton. We’ll see if time gaps are awarded as there already have been some interesting decisions this season.
The sprint of the peloton sees Lander in front of a threesome of Kanter, Petit and Stallaert with 400 m to the line.
And the Dane gets 5th place in front of the German. On the line Stallaert edges out Petit for 7th. Per, Altur, Daniel and Wisniowski finish in 9th to 12th place. Gerts, Tiller and Zepuntke complete the Top 15.
Congratulations to Gamper for the stage win. He also takes the lead in the GC (though no time gaps are awarded once again) and the points classification. Stavrakakis is the best young rider.
