Vuelta a Espana
Stage 19 is another medium mountain stage. Nothing above a Cat 2 climb today, we have one of those early and one of those to the finish. In between a series of Cat 3s and 4s in the second half of the stage. Overall, the riders will cover 194 kilometers.
Kudus tops the favorites list, if he is going to win this Vuelta he needs to put some pressure on Herklotz
Herklotz is active early as the fight to get in the break gets underway. Front two right now are Girdlestone and Lastra.
15k gone and the break is 15 riders, their lead is 1’37. Behind it has been ZARA working in the peloton to limit the break from getting any larger, just like yesterday. We will see if that means they will be serious about chasing later again. The 15 allowed away include the two mentioned earlier plus:
Lane
Roman
Kastrantas
Blums
Warchol
Martinez
Phodingam
Sosa
Vine
Slagter
Vosekalns
Kennaugh
Formolo
Only Schlegel missing from the top 5 in the KOM competition, all those short climbs seem to favor Formolo but give credit to Warchol, Sosa and Vosekalns that they haven’t give up. Formolo also best on GC at 10’45.
5k left in the first climb for the break their lead over the peloton is 3’36. The peloton is being led by Cavagna. This climb is 18k at 4.2% but the last 5k is the hardest stretch.
Formolo again uses his extra punch to grab first place at the top ahead of Warchol. He leads that competition 156-129 now. Gap is 3’47 to the peloton.
From here the riders tackle a descent and then about 50k of flat before the series of small climbs begin.
The break pass through Pelayos de la Presa. Their lead is just 2’44, Sony – Force India, ZARA, Binance and Polar have been chasing since the lead peaked at about 5 minutes. Once they leave the town the riders will begin to climb with the next categorized climb starting in 8k, it is the Cat 4 Puerto de la Almenara, 4.6k at 5.3%. The next 70k is generally uphill and includes 4 cat 4s and a Cat 3 climb. There are 98k left in the stage.
At the top of the Puerto de la Almenara, Formolo is again the fastest, this time ahead of Blums. They will get to fight it out again in 10k at the next Cat 4. Peloton at 2 minutes.
Formolo is actually beaten on the next climb. Sosa goes early and he and Kastrantas take the points. Warchol gains 1 point on his rival by finishing third. Peloton at 2’16. Vine and Lane have been dropped from the break.
11k before the break starts the longest climb in the sequence which is the Cat 3 Puerto de la Cruz Verde (8.4k at 4.7%). Phodingnam and Slagter were also dropped over the top. There are 87 riders in the peloton, Stork left is the only one from Puma other than Herklotz.
4.6k to climb Conci has cut the lead to 43 seconds as ZARA seem intent on making this hard. Only 46 riders left in the Red Jersey group but all the top 25 in GC are still there (or in the break).
With another early attack Sosa takes maximum points and opens up a gap of 25 seconds. Conci ran out of gas and the peloton has dropped back to 1’10.
But on the descent Conci gets going again and with a little help from Hosek the break is caught with 47k to go.
On the next climb, another Cat 4, Eenkhoorn attacks with Formolo and Warchol. They take the points in that order. They also open a gap of 35 seconds. About 10k to the next and final Cat 4.
The KOM hunters drop back to the pack but Eenkhoorn continues and opens up an almost 1-minute lead. But with 35k to go chasing by ZARA, Binance and EA have him back to 37 seconds.
Cort Nielsen bridges over to Eenkhoorn but they can’t agree to work together and they are caught soon after.
At the Cat 4 Formolo attacks but settles for 2nd as Mamykin launches an attack and goes clear. Formolo has done a nice job to build his KOM lead today and is looking good for that jersey.
From here there is about 20k of mostly descending before the Cat 2 climb to the finish.
The Red Jersey group completes the descent with a deficit of 47 seconds to Mamykin, who is the only one out front. About 15k to go, about 6k of flat before the final climb. 20 riders were dropped from the group on the descent including all the KOM chasers: Formolo, Warchol, Schlegel and Sosa, as well as Eenkhoorn. All of those except Sosa in the GC top 20 so they could be losing ground today. Carcueva trying to close the gap but he doesn’t look great.
Mamykin starts the final climb with a lead of 27-seconds. Binance (Figueiredo), Moser (Hosek) and EA (Rucigaj) doing the chasing. Thanks to work from Chaiyasombat the riders mentioned earlier have rejoined bringing the Red Jersey group back to 52 riders. The climb is the Alto de León, it is 8.4k at 6.5%.
After an attack from Tenorio and Godoy fails to get traction a counter from Latour and Kirsch brings the group back to Mamykin.
Nesset tries to go with them but can’t and they get a gap. Tenorio and Morton take up the chase.
5k banner for the two leaders, they have 28 seconds.
4k to go, an acceleration by Wellens pulls 8 chasers clear, it is all the top 10 in the GC except Almeida (9th) (and Latour up front).
3k to go, Kirsch looks to be losing Latour’s wheel, they have 19 seconds over the chase where Wellens has been doing all the work. Almeida and Geoghegan Hart have just caught on to the back of the chasers.
Under 2k to go, Latour clinging to a 10 second lead. Kirsch has been caught and dropped from the chasers. Almeida, Tenorio and Geoghegan Hart also dropped.
At the 1k banner Herklotz makes the catch. Gaps beginning to appear between the chasers. The tightest GC gap is between Wellens and Sivakov for 4th, it is just 10 seconds.
Herklotz once again shows his acceleration and opens up a 7 second gap on Latour, Kudus and Morton. The next trio of Wellens, Sivakov, and Choi are 9 seconds further back.
Stage win number 5 for Herklotz. Who needs teammates?
Kudus 2nd, Latour 3rd and Morton 4th. They all lose 10 seconds to the winner.
Another 10 seconds behind Sivakov leads home Choi and Wellens. No gap between those 3 so still 10 seconds between Wellens and Sivakov. Latour’s bonus and time gap moves him back a little closer to those two but he is still 37 seconds behind Sivakov.
Almeida takes 8th ahead of Godoy and Geoghegan Hart. Almeida loses 1 minute to the winner but gains 1’10 on Tenorio moving him up one place in the GC.
Not much change on the leaderboards today. Tinkoff does cut EA’s teams lead down to 5’47. That could be in play tomorrow.
