Vuelta a Espana
Stage 18 is a 141k medium mountain stage, with the final climb peaking 25k before the finish it seems to have breakaway written all over it. Nevertheless there is no shortage of climbing with two Cat 1’s, a Cat 3 and a Cat 4.
Herklotz showed a little weakness yesterday as Morton became the first GC rider to gain time on him (excluding the TTT and time bonuses) but the German still holds a healthy 1’37 lead over Kudus and 2’57 over Morton.
With the long descent and flat before the finish the stage is less attractive to the climbers so a lot of the initial attackers are unfamiliar names but with about 10 riders out front Vosekalns, 3rd in the KOM, has a go and that pulls out Formolo and Warchol, 1 and 2 in that competition.
With Schlegel and Girdlestone also on the move ZARA decide it is getting out of hand and Thomas goes to the front. At the very front the initial attackers have swept up the points at the lone sprint prime.
After discouraging some additional attacks ZARA ease off and we have 17 riders out front with a lead of 1’38 and 125k to ride.
The full list includes 15 teams:
Lane
Van Poucke
Figueiredo
Craddock
Girdlestone
Agrotis
Ulysbayev
Vingegaard
Peters, Warchol
Martinez
Kasperkiewicz
Gee
Vosekalns
Formolo
Hoelgaard, Schlegel
The first climb, the Pena Negra is 14k at 6.2% and starts in just over 4k.
10k to climb for the peloton. Polar, Sony – Force India and ZARA all look to be helping Puma with the chasing. Although they aren’t going hard and the gap is out to 4 minutes.
3k to climb for the break, Kasperkiewicz, Agrotis and Peters have been dropped. Van Poucke in trouble. Gap holding at around 4’30.
Warchol attacks inside the last K and only Schlegel and Formolo can stay with him.
But Warchol has that recurring nightmare of his, one more time, and Formolo sweeps by in the last 200 meters to take maximum points and expand his KOM lead.
Castrillo leads the peleton over 6’01 down. Formolo has continued on his own on the descent. Schlegel and Warchol 25 seconds down.
The chase goes hard on the descent and begins to cut the lead triggering a crisis for Carlsberg as Quintana is dropped and the whole team has to go back for him. No reports of a puncture so unclear what happened.
88k to go as the break start the 2nd climb, the Cat 3 Alto de Piedra Aguda (4.6k at 6.1%) it is back to 14 riders, only Kasperkiewicz, Agrotis and Peters missing but the gap is down to 3’57 versus the Sony – Force India led peloton. The Carlsberg group are still 2’11 down.
Schlegel takes maximum points ahead of Formolo and Vosekalns. Peloton at 3’58. Things looking grim for Carlsberg, they don’t seem to be able to close the gap with Sony – Force India and ZARA insistent on chasing the break.
Schlegel and Vosekalns tied for third in the KOM competition.
What that must that man be thinking. Carlsberg still all together but the gap to the Red Jersey is now over 4 minutes. Quintana will need a heroic breakaway attempt on one of the next two stages to make up for this disaster.
The next climb for the break is a Cat 4, 2.1k at 5.4%. After that a long descent and then the last obstacle of the day the Cat 1, Puerto de Serranillos which is 21k at an average of 5%. The peloton at 2’48 with 65k to go. Carlsberg are holding their deficit to 4 minutes at the moment. The 3 dropped breakaway riders were never able to rejoin and have been caught by the peloton.
Schlegel again takes maximum points this time it is Formolo and Warchol behind him.
50k for the peloton, ZARA (Castrillo) and Polar (Krul, Mullen) doing the work. The gap is 3’24 to the break and same amount back to the Carlsberg group. But it is down to Aranburu and Quintana himself doing the work in that group although some other Carlsberg riders are still there.
As they start the Cat 1 climb Soler drives the pace and with 17k to climb the peloton are just 2’02 behind the break. The pace is bad news for Quintana, his gap back to 3’58.
ZARA gets some help from Sony – Force India (Shirota, Carboni, Leemreize) and with 10k to climb the gap to the break is just 1’24. Quintana back to 3’24 behind but only Aranburu left with him.
5.8k to climb as Conci hits the front. Girdlestone, Ulysbayev, and Gee caught, the others have just 33 seconds. Quintana at 3’11 but he is chasing on his own now. To avoid torturing the Carlsberg fans we are going to stop tracking him now.
The catch is made with 5k to climb. Polar, ZARA and Sony never seem to have been comfortable with the potential for this group to make big gains. 53 riders in the front group.
3k to climb and Warchol attacks, Sosa, Schlegel, Vosekalns, and Formolo follow. Top 5 in the KOM competition involved in this.
Just after Wellens bursts out of the pack, latches on to the back and turns it into a GC play.
Wellens then goes to the front and the other get on the train, except Vosekalns who is dropped. Figueiredo leads in the peloton but Latour tries to bridge on his own. The gap is 17 seconds.
Latour makes it across while Sosa is dropped. The King Power man should have been fresher than the rest but he seems to be missing something this race. At the top Formolo goes clear to take maximum points and pad his KOM lead. The gap to the pack is 40 seconds, Choi doing the chasing.
20k banner. Wellens, Latour, Warchol and Formolo have 35 seconds on the Kudus-led peloton. Schlegel was dropped over the top and caught by the pack.
With 13k to go and the gap still at about 30 seconds Mamykin decides to bridge over on his own. Given Sivakov is only 2 seconds behind Wellens on GC you wonder what he thinks of that move. Quntana not the only one missing out at the moment, Nesset (12th), Preidler (13th) and Mavrikakis (17th) are in a group 41 seconds down on the 19-rider Red Jersey group.
7k for the 4 leaders, they can see where the road flattens out just ahead, it might be hard to maintain their lead on the flat. Mamykin was joined by Eenkhoorn and they are 15 seconds behind. The Red Jersey group another 27 seconds down. The Nesset group is another 40 seconds down,
3k to ride, just 10 seconds separates each of the front 3 groups. Williams doing the chasing.
Williams cracks and the gaps go back out again. Godoy bridges up solo to Mamykin and Eenkhoorn.
Under the 1k banner Latour launches the sprint.
Latour still has the edge on Formolo and Wellens as they close on the line. Warchol looks like he will settle for 4th.
Latour has his second stage win. Credit to Polar and ZARA for creating the opportunity. Formolo takes back-to-back 2nd places. 3rd place and a little more gap over Sivakov is Wellens' reward for the efforts today. Warchol with another point scoring finish.
Mamykin, Eenkhoorn, and Godoy take 5th to 7th.
Herklotz leads home Almeida and Kirsch to wrap the top 10.
In the end the first 29 all get the same time so Wellens and Latour just gain from time bonuses. No changes in any other jersey. EA and Tinkoff both put at least 3 riders in the front group.
