Vuelta a Espana
Stage 17 takes the riders back to the mountains, but a much easier stage today, just a long but gentle Cat 2 mid-stage and a Cat 1 near the end followed by a Cat 2 to the finish. Only 128k in all, maybe one for the break.
The top 7 on GC populate 6 of the top 7 favorite slots with only 4th placed Latour further down the list. Just 6 seconds separate him from Sivakov in 6th, so he can’t afford to be too much weaker than Sivakov or 5th placed Wellens.
The first sprint point comes 10k into the race and the points are taken by the first 5 attackers. They are include some familiar names: Warchol, Formolo, Nesset and Shirota. One new name in Girdlestone. This group has 45 seconds on a group of 9 and 1’56 on the peloton.
With about 30k gone those 14 come together as the break of the day. The lead is 2’46. The other nine include Schlegel, Mavrikakis, Preidler, Eenkhoorn, Blums, Arensman, Storer, Gee, and Mansouri. Preidler is best on GC in 14th, at 15’58. Warchol and Formolo are 1-2 in the KOM competition, Schlegel is 7th.
The first half of the stage is pretty flat and Puma do enough to keep the lead at reasonable levels. So as the break start the first climb, with 61k to go, the lead is 5’17. The climb is the Cat 2 Collado de la Yegua (10.2k at 5.4%).
7k to climb for the peloton, they aren’t going hard and the lead is out to 7’43. Nobody dropped.
Schlegel goes early and Formolo can’t quite track him down before the top. Warchol gets 4th meaning Formolo moves from 11 points down to 7 points down. The two Lidl riders, who are not in the same class as the rest, are dropped before the top. Peloton at 8’20
The Lidl riders rejoin on the descent and the breakaway is all together as they start the Cat 1 climb, the Portillo de las Batuecas, which is 8.3k at 7.6%. It is followed by about 10k of descending and flat before the final Cat 2. The peloton fell back by as much as 10’30 but have used the valley to cut the lead to 9’36. About 50 riders in the red jersey group with most of the rest 1’15 down.
Mansouri is the first man dropped with 4k to climb. The red jersey group at 9’17. The dropped group has not been able to rejoin so far, highest ranked rider to miss the split is Carapaz, 34th on GC.
5k to climb and with the gap at 9’42, Latour attacks, Herklotz follows. Gee has been dropped from the break.
Warchol attacks the break with 1k to climb. Schlegel, Formolo, Girdlestone and Preidler are the first to follow. In the peleton Kudus is leading the chase of the two escapees.
Warchol pulls the riders mentioned, plus Mavrikakis, clear by the top but can’t hold his pace and Formolo comes round him and Schlegel to take maximum points. Warchol settles for 5th and 4 points. Formolo takes over the virtual jersey 99-96. Behind the peloton trails the two attackers by 16 seconds, Borisavljevic doing some work.
2k to climb for the peloton, the two attackers have 12 seconds. Rodriguez and Carboni holding them close but can’t quite close the gap. Up front Formolo and Schlegel have a small gap over the other 4 who crossed the top together
With 1k to climb Kudus brings the two attackers back, the gap to the leaders is 9’03. The Red Jersey group is 31 riders with Carapaz now trying to bridge across on his own.
With the top of the Cat 1 in sight Latour has another go. Up front, the front 6 have come back together.
The breakaway reach the final climb with a lead of 8’41 over Latour who has 8 seconds on the chase which is now being led by Morton. Eenkhoorn and Nesset have been able to rejoin bringing the front group back to 8 riders (those 2 plus Mavrikakis, Warchol, Schlegel, Formolo, Girdlestone and Preidler). The final climb is 6’4k at 6.4%. The last 1.3k is the hardest section.
10k for the peloton. Latour has been brought back and Tinkoff have taken up the chase. Carapaz was not able to bridge across, the Red Jersey group has 28 riders.
Eenkhoorn attacks the break under the 5k banner and gets a gap.
The Tinkoff-led peloton starts the final climb with a deficit of 7’54 to Eenkhoorn, who has 32 seconds on the other 7 and about 3k to go. Looks like a breakaway win today.
2k to go for Eenkhoorn, his gap up to 37 seconds. Formolo leading the chase. Behind Choi has attacked the peloton.
Kudus sets out after Choi bringing Herklotz and Wellens with him. Morton and Sivakov try to bridge across. Latour has to respond and leads the remaining chasers.
1k banner for Eenkhoorn, his lead is 32 seconds. Behind the 6 attackers have come together and have 45 seconds over Latour, he is losing 4th place right now.
Formolo sets out on his own after Eenkhoorn. Simultaneously Choi has pulled Morton and Wellens clear of the other 3. The gap between Eenkhoorn and Choi is 7’12.
Formolo fights his way up to Eenkhoorn but then he has to sit down. Nesset is third, 16 seconds down. Herklotz has attacked Kudus and Sivakov and is trying to reach the 3 ahead.
Eenkhoorn knows Formolo doesn’t have enough to come around him and celebrates. As a consolation the Rabobank man will become the 8th different rider to wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. Nesset has the 3rd podium spot secured.
Warchol, Mavrikakis, and Schlegel take 4th to 6th. Girdlestone will get 7th and Preidler 8th. The latter had the most to gain on GC but was one of the weakest in the final group. Right now he is looking at a gain of around 5 minutes which might put hm back in the top 10.
In the GC battle, Morton, Wellens and Choi have just under 2k to ride and a 17 second lead on Herklotz, 32 seconds on Kudus and Sivakov and 53 seconds on a 7-rider chase group that has Latour and 8th through 13th on GC.
1k banner for the Morton group, Sivakov and Kudus have caught Herklotz and the gap is 31 seconds. The Latour group is another 27 seconds down. Latour looks in danger of being dropped. Quintana, Kirsch, and Geoghegan Hart have already been dropped.
500 meters for Morton, he has dropped the other two. He started the day 2’41 down on Kudus, he won’t get that back but he is making some gains. Behind Godoy, Almeida, and Tenorio have caught Sivakov, Herklotz and Kudus.
Blums and Storer take 9th and 10th.
Morton leads home the GC guys for 13th. For the first time Herklotz isn’t the strongest among them.
21 seconds later Kudus gets 14th ahead of Wellens, Choi and Herklotz. They all get the same time as do Tenorio, Godoy and Sivakov (18th to 20th on the stage).
Latour loses 1’21 to Wellens and Sivakov dropping him to 6th on GC.
No big gains for the break, Nesset, Preidler, Formolo and Warchol move up into 12th through 15th. Quintana and Kirsch are the big losers dropping to 18th and 16th. Might we see them in the break tomorrow?
There are no changes in any of the jerseys except the KOM but mainly by having a man in the break EA put over 9 minutes into Tinkoff in the team competition expanding their lead to 9’30.
