Tour de Romandie
Stage 2
174.1km
Delemont - Yverdon-les-Bains

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/01.jpg

After forgetting the sprint favorites in the preview, we get to see the favorites for today’s stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn leads the group of those expected to cross the line first. It’s a hilly start to the race, but the peloton shouldn’t force that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/02.jpg

The breakaway gets away after a series of early attacks. It was a steep start to the race, so it was tough to get away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Keup are the first two to be able to get away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/03.jpg

Attempting to bridge up is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown. The gap almost closes at the top of the Cat 3 climb, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre leads for maximum points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Keup takes 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Silva is behind this group for Saeco, but the peloton seems convinced that the right number of breakaway riders is 4, not 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Silva is caught and the other four come together quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/04.jpg

The breakaway is established with those four. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Keup, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre. With 147km to go, the gap is 3:15. The gap extends to 5:00 with 130km to go. At maximum, we get to 6:00 at 120km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/05.jpg

The first real action is the sprint point with 102km to go. It only gives points to the breakaway with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo showing the greatest burst of speed. The Finnish champ appeared to take the victory, however the points are given to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Keup, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown. Sadly the video of the sprint is not being presented by the event organizers, but their timing system hasn’t faltered.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/06.jpg

The 2nd category climb is the opportunity for the KOM hunters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre enters the climb with the lead, but there’s 10 points on offer. The breakaway starts the final 5km of the climb with an advantage of 3:12

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/07.jpg

It’s a slow ascent before the final push to the line and even slower for the main group who gives away time. They all attack with 700m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo crosses the line first. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown is 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Keup 3rd, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre 4th. This means all 4 breakaway riders will end the day with 10 points. We’ll see who gets to wear the jersey. The gap is 4:00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig leads the peloton over for the final 2 points. The gap is 4:33 as they head into the descent. Indosat Ooredoo, Sauber Petronas, and Kraftwerk Man Machine are those leading the peloton as they have most of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/09.jpg

At the bottom of the descent, there’s a group of 61 riders off the back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Barta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Uwizeyimana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Aru, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ciccone seem to be the biggest names off the back. There’s a 1:52 gap to the front of the peloton, which could be salvaged. They barely manage to pull it together on one of the final kickers to the sprint point, but the gap could open in a second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/10.jpg

Sprint two comes with 25km to go and a steep incline. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo shows he’s easily the strongest to take the win here ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Keup. The interim standings also pop up showing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo with 12 points, meaning the time keepers have corrected their errors at sprint 1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo won there as well, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Brown and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre. 12-8-2-2 is the standings at this point. The breakaway has 1:09 with 25km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/11.jpg

Under the banner, the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo thinks it is time to go alone. He creates a gap over the other leaders with 20km to go and has 8 seconds over the 3 others. 0:53 over the peloton who is now 85 strong, but likely to grow and shrink throughout the remaining inclines.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/12.jpg

The 3 have been swallowed by the peloton and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo out alone in front. Still some teamwork in the peloton as well between the teams controlling throughout the day. The gap between the 82 in the peloton and a gap of 82 behind is 1:30. Again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Barta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Darbellay seems the biggest names behind but the GC contenders aren’t quite clear yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/13.jpg

Same situation, same gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo up 40 seconds with 10km to go. Indosat Ooredoo in the lead for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/14.jpg

The catch is made with 6km to go and the sprinters are already near the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn sits 2nd wheel, but this feels way too early. The 82 man group is still away as well, with 79 only 1:16 behind. They could sprint to the finish and likely end same time, but who knows. Indosat Ooredoo is the first to line up a real train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/15.jpg

2.5km to go and Indosat Ooredoo leads the way. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Kochetkov and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn sits alone on the left with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini in the wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Doull is behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan, but his chances seem slim.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/16.jpg

As the riders head under the kite, all three Indosat Ooredoo riders line up side-by-side. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn is behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Kochetkov and may still be getting a leadout, just not from their own teammate. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Doull is next with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller on opposite sides.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/17.jpg

A big turn kept positions close to the same with 400m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan holds the rail ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller is coming quickly with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto next to him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Russo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Silvestre seem the others to be contesting for a top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/18.jpg

No time to celebrate, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan holds on for the win! A small consolation prize after the challenges of yesterday. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn holds strong for 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Russo takes 5th ahead of a close pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Silvestre. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Doull, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Groselj come across the for the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/20.jpg

Here’s the main back group… looking ahead at the gap between them and the peloton. We shall see what the time keepers say about this one. It’ll be close. Lots of 5s, 8s, behind both groups to come in slowly as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Nur Hasan takes the victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bissegger is shown in yellow on stage placings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Le Berre shows us that the intermediate scorings for KOM by the reporter were incorrect. 12 gets him the lead.
