Vuelta a Espana
Stage 16 is the last rest day for the GC riders, after this, 4 climbing stages and a TT. But today they will leave it to the fastmen to worry about, not even any KOM points on offer. The stage goes 196k from León to Salamanca, the sprinters almost let the last stage get away from them, the distance today will put their already tired teams under further pressure.
The organizers believe in the sprint teams today, it will be important to limit the size of the break.
The sprint teams do get to the front pretty quickly today and cut off attackers after the first five riders. The lucky five are Peters, Januskevicius, Bravo, Nareklishvili, and Castrillo.
As the peloton roll through the first sprint (the break didn’t contest it) the lead is 4’01 with 127k to go. So far Puma doing the work, or more specifically, Heidemann.
Shortly afterwards, with the lead up to 4’26 Hamilton and Leung join the chase.
80k to go, Nyoni has joined the chase and the lead is 2’52. Last sprint stage so last day of work for the man from Eswatini, he has been flirting with the time limit in the mountains so he will be glad that he can relax after today and focus on seeing if he can get to Madrid.
A puncture with 50k to go is very bad news for Peters, although with the break just 1’32 ahead it isn’t looking good for any of them.
26k to go. A gutsy ride by Peters brought him back to the front but an attack from Bravo almost immediately dropped him and Nareklishvili, and they have now been caught. The others still have 53 seconds. Meanwhile sprint outsider Larsen punctured; he didn’t lose contact but has a lot of work to do to get back in position for the sprint.
No panic today for the sprinters as the catch is made a comfortable 14k from the finish. King Power on the front with Kasperkiewicz, Granigan and Darbinyan. Hsu 4th wheel. Larsen has made it back up front and is with the other sprinters.
2k to go. Drizners on the front, Groves just behind him as well as the Tryg duo of Hoelgaard and Kump, then Darbinyan. Then Visser and Demare. Behind Groves are Hansen, Larsen, Peak, and Hsu
As they approach 1k Kump pulls Demare to the front, Trgy might be going back to their over-eager ways. Hodeg has fought his way onto Demare’s wheel. On the left, Harrison and Bouglas have also moved up.
But those on the left suffer from taking the long route around the corner and with 700 meters it is Demare leading, then Hodeg, Groves and Hsu. Thijssen and Prasad (in green) have shown good patience to get themselves into nice positions should the leaders fade.
400 meters, still pretty similar picture to the one above but Prasad has moved past Hsu into 4th on the road. The last k runs slightly downhill which might help.
Today there is no last 200-meter collapse, Demare has his third stage win. Hodeg also manages to hold his speed this time and take 2nd. Groves third.
Prasad takes 4th, Demare’s victory puts his points lead under pressure but the 4th place should give Prasad enough cushion to take the Green jersey, barring Herklotz going crazy in the last week. Prasad was the most consistent sprinter. Thijssen 5th, Hsu 6th, and Larsen 7th.
Harrison, Bouglas and Van Poppel wrap up the top 10.
No changes in any of the jerseys. Prasad’s points lead is down to 18 points but it seems unlikely Demare can score that many from intermediate sprints. Herklotz, 75 points behind, seems like the bigger threat if the breaks don’t take the remaining stages.
