Vuelta a Espana
Stage 14 sees the Vuelta a Espana peloton return to the hills. Well the stage is hill rated, but per medium mountain would be a better descriptions. Plenty of KOM points on offer with a Cat 3, 4 Cat 2’s and a Cat 1. The Cat 1 peaks just 5k from the end of the 181k stage.
The organizers think it is a GC day and when it comes to the punchier climbs there is no question who will top the list.
10k in and there is a 12- man break with a 2’37 lead. 12 wasn’t enough to take the stage yesterday, maybe today. The lucky crew are:
Vosekalns
Van Poucke
Koch
Phodingam
Hamilton
Seibeb
Tolhoek
Agrotis
Lyu
Sulvaran
Hvideberg
Lammertink
A good break for KOM leader Vosekalns, he is the only participant with significant KOM points. He is also best on GC at 8’17 down.
No points for Vosekalns at the first climb, a Cat 3. Hamiltion leads them across. Peleton at 3’37 with 154k to go.
120k to go, the peloton has kept the lead below 5 minutes and now it is down to 4. Interesting group of teams working: Binance (Mengoulas), Sony – Force India (Ocampo), Polar (Viennet) and Zara (Thomas).
The break starts the first of three Cat 2s with a lead of 3’02. This climb is the Puerto de Tudons, 10.5k at 4.9% with the second half being much harder than the first half.
Van Poucke attacks about 1k out and holds the pace to the top, he takes first ahead of Hamilton. 6 points for Vosekalns in the third. Hvideberg and Lammertink couldn’t stay with the rest on the climb. Peleton at 2’19, ZARA driving the pace.
ZARA’s forcing splits 39 riders off the front as the peloton reaches the next climb, the Puerto de Torremanzanas (14k at 4.6%). The break are 2’48 ahead. The three breakaway beneficiaries from Stage 9 still near the top of the GC have all missed the split ( Preidler, Bernard, Arensman). More surprisingly so has Formolo (13th on GC).
ZARA and Sony – Force India continue to push the pace on the climb making it harder for the riders behind to close the split.
2.5k to climb for the back half of the peloton which is being led by Preidler and Formolo as they try to bridge back across to the front half which has been shedding riders and is down to 28. Bartl is leading the front half, they have 55 seconds on the back half and trail the break by 2’17. Hvideberg and Vosekalns dropped from the break although it looks like the latter might come back.
Koch proves strongest at the top of the climb ahead of Seibeb and Phodingam
Vosekalns hasn’t been able to score much today and he is still behind the front of the break. But none of the break riders have scored enough to even move into the KOM top 10 yet.
55k to ride for the leaders. They are down to 9 as Lammertink has been dropped. Vosekalns is alone at 1’06, not looking good for him. The Red Jersey group is at 2’12 and being led by Sony – Force India. That group has just 26 riders including all the GC top 20 except those mentioned earlier and Conci, Rubio and Vosekalns. Tinkoff have 5 riders in the group, in contrast Herklotz has just Stork with him. Next on the road at 3’06 is the Formolo group. That group has the rest of the top 20 except Arensman and Rubio. The next large group is at 5’29. So unless they pace slows they seem out of it. Arensman is 7’32 down and on his own, so it looks like his time near the top of the GC and in the young rider’s jersey are almost over.
46k to go. Carapaz and Bongiorno bring the third group back to the Red Jersey group. The combined group trails the break by 1’49, a lot riders burned matches in closing that split. Vosekalns is back with this group as well. The riders are on the last Cat 2 now, the Puerto de la Carrasqueta (12.1k at 4.6%).
Rodriguez sets a torrid pace on the climb and reduces the break’s lead to 42 seconds with 5k to climb. Bernard and Vosekalns have been dropped.
Schlegel, Mavrikakis, and Preidler are dropped soon after.
1k banner in sight. Sulvaran has been dropped by the break and caught by the peloton. The gap is still 45 seconds. Carboni, Conci, and Figueiredo sharing the pacemaking in the Red Jersey group. The deeper teams really dictating things this stage. Getting caught behind earlier has proved costly as Carapaz, Formolo, and Bongiorno have all been dropped as has Stork. Meaning Herklotz is on his own. Kudus has been for a while.
Koch and Tolhoek are the last men standing from the break as the Conci-led chase group rips through the remnants of the break.
Koch takes maximum points with Tolhoek second as Sosa and Warchol attack from the chase group to take 3rd and 4th.
KOM standings have Vosekalns on 56, followed by Warchol on 48 and Sosa on 46. Still a Cat 1 to climb.
The 4 up front don’t persist and with 30k to go they are caught and there is a 35-rider group at the front of the race. About 20k of mostly flat before the start of the Cat 1.
19k to go and Mamykin has a dig. Not clear if he is trying to get away or to take the sprint point which is 700 meters ahead.
Mamykin takes the points ahead of Carboni, Almeida, Conci and Kirsch.
12k Mamykin tries to get away again. With him are Nesset, Warchol, Quintana, and Sosa.
Conci doesn’t let them go. Wellens better have a big attack in him because his team has been dominant today.
Geoghegan Hart is at the back of the group as they hit the Cat 1. It is Cat 1 for not its length but its steepness – 4.2k at 9.8% with stretches up to 19%. The other teams have succeeded in isolating Herklotz but this climb doesn’t seem like the right territory to ambush him.
The first attack comes from Tenorio. Sosa and Warchol follow.
Tenorio doesn’t get a gap and just ends up setting tempo. 2k to climb. Conci dropped.
1.2k to go Sosa and Warchol go again, they aren’t GC threats and are allowed to get a gap. They want the KOM points but a stage win could also be available. They are in the 19% section.
Warchol and Sosa are pegged back. 800 meters to go, it begins to flatten out towards the top.
Sosa and Warchol have another go in the closing meters of the climb. Tenorio follows. Behind them Latour and Wellens counter.
Warchol takes maximum points, that is going to put him back in the KOM jersey. Tenorio and Sosa next. They have a small gap on a 20-rider group, all the top GC guys still in that group.
The gap is quickly closed after the top and with 3k to ride it will be small group sprint to take the stage.
1k banner, Tinkoff take advantage of their numbers to put 2 up front but neither Vlasov nor Foliforov are great finishers. Also in the front row are Williams, Tenorio and Wellens. Williams the fastest from that group. Just behind are Latour and Kudus then Almeida, Morton and Borisavljevic.
500 meters. Latour on the front ahead of Williams then Almeida, Kudus and Wellens. Next Vlasov, Tenorio and Herklotz just ahead of Morton and Geoghegan Hart.
100 meters, it looks good for Latour, Wellens second, Herklotz up to the third.
And that is the podium. Nice work by Latour, Polar was one of the teams who worked hard to make the race. Kudus takes 4th then Geoghegan Hart and Almeida
Morton, Tenorio, Rikunov and Choi complete the top 10.
All the interlopers are gone from the top of the GC. Morton moves into 3rd where he is expected to be. Almeida also takes over the young rider’s jersey just a little later than expected. Tinkoff are the team’s leader, 6 seconds ahead of EA.
Back to the mountains tomorrow.
