Vuelta a Espana
Stage 13 is another day for the sprinters. 168 kilometers of flat terrain into Orihuela. A single Cat 2 along the way. Plus, the usual 2 sprint points.
Demare hasn’t got it right on a flat stage yet but the organizers have faith in him.
Again a lot of interest in the break and again the sprint teams are slow to chase. And today they decide just to call it off and allow a 12-riders to escape. They are in three groups of four but should come together soon.
First group:
Januskevicius
Klaris
Peters
Marcos
Second Group:
Thill
Sulvaran
Campenaerts
Lammertink
Third Group:
Evenepoel
Zakarin
Cataford
Jurado
The 12 are together as they roll through the first sprint point. Puma chasing, the gap is 3’38 with 119k to go.
83k to go, the sprint teams have come to the front and reduced what was a 5’09 lead to 3’57. But their resources are stretched and with 12 riders up front this could go either way. Working are Tryg (Nyoni), King Power (Leung) and Amaysim (Hamilton). Ahead the break has taken out the 2nd sprint without contesting it.
70k to go, the break are on the lone climb, the Alto de Hondón, it doesn’t look like much of climb here because the first half is very flat. Overall, it is 11.5k at 4.4% with all the serious climbing done in the last 4k. Cataford the most only KOM contender in this group but even if he wins the climb he can’t take back the jersey. The peloton at 2’42, a split has about 90 riders out the back. We will review that if it persists.
Cataford does his best but Peters takes maximum points on the climb, the Canadian just 5th.
50k to go for the peloton. The gap grew on the climb and is currently 3’17. Riders working include Schlegel, Phodingam, Storer. The peloton still split into two big groups. The break spread over the road right now with only the first 5 over the climb up front (Peters, Cataford, Januskevicius, Evenepoel, Sulvaran). It looks like most of the rest should get back on though.
25k for the leading 5. Another group of 5 is 41 seconds behind, but they have been that far behind for a while and don’t seem able to close. In that group are Jurado, Lammertink, Thill, Marcos and Zakarin. Klaris and Campenaerts have been caught by the peloton. The former is important as it has brought Aker into the chase which was needed as the other teams seemed spent. Andersen leading right now and the peloton is at 1’52. The peloton is mostly back together.
15k the front 5 have 33 seconds over the second 5 and another 26 seconds over the peloton. MOL, EA, ELCO and Grieg have all contributed to the chase and now it is ISA-Hexacta but no team is committing a lot of resources. A handful of riders still off the back including 9th on GC Preidler.
5k banner for the leaders, the 2nd group is caught. A big pull from Sendeku got the peloton to 28 seconds. But now Krigbaum is on the front, Carlsberg have Sulvaran up front so they have a choice to make. The front group all look pretty spent, none of them stands out in terms of sprinting ability.
2.5k to go for the leaders, Januskevicius is driving on the front with Peters on his wheel. Have we mentioned the Lithuanian spent a year at McCormick? Evonik have suddenly appeared at the front of the peloton, presumably to block. Gap is still 24 seconds. The peloton is pretty much all back together. After the corner ahead of the break, it is a straight shot to the finish.
Nope Evonik is leading out the sprint, they must have figured it was over for the break, who all seem to be spent. Van der Haar leading out Visser. But behind Visser are the bigger guns. Van Poppel first among them right now. 1.9k to go for the peloton.
Heartbreak for the breakaway as they are caught under the 1k banner. Peters still out front but Demare has him in his sights Van Poppel and Larsen next.
500 meters it is Demare versus Van Poppel. Has the Tryg man gone too early again. Next is Larsen then left to right its Harrison, Groves and Visser. Behind them Hsu, Kragh Andersen and Thijssen.
200 meters for Demare, Van Poppel looks to be fading.
Demare gets it right this time and shows his speed. Groves and Kragh Andersen are closest to him.
Kragh Andersen gets 2nd and Groves 3rd. Then Hsu and Thijssen
Bouglas comes late to edge Visser for 6th. Prasad settles for 8th today and Larsen and Harrison fade to 9th and 10th.
Demare moves into 2nd in the points competition exactly 50 points behind Prasad. The Aker man hasn’t scored well of late but has benefited from the others splitting the points. Only one flat stage left so Aker can begin to feel confident. No changes in any of the classifications.
A hilly stage tomorrow. Could be one for the break or a chance for Herklotz to tighten his grip on the GC.
