Stage 12 Report

After all the excitement yesterday, the GC riders get to take a break today. Stage 12 is 177k from Albox to La Manga del Mar Menor, some bumps along the way but just a single categorized climb, and it is a Cat 4. Two sprint points as well.

Back to the sprinters as stage favorites.

It takes a while for the sprinter’s teams to get riders chasing and by the time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Hamilton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Kump reach the front there are already 14 riders ahead. But the gaps aren’t big.

With 20k gone there are just 3 riders left out front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Blums, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Jurado, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Viviani, as work by King Power, Carlsberg and Minions brings most of the escapees back. Just 4k to the first sprint.

The three escapees just take the sprint points as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Groves and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel hunt them from behind.

Groves and Van Poppel take 4th and 5th but the break is not brought back.

After the sprint point the threesome’s lead is allowed to grow and with 125k to go it is 2’24. Puma working to keep them relatively close.

On the Cat 4 climb Blums drops both the others to take maximum points. Jurado second. Amaysim, Tryg and King Power have taken over the chasing but the gap never got that large, it is 3’39 right now. 65k to go.

With 50k to go about 40 riders split off the front as they chase the second sprint in a few kilometers. Viviani was never able to rejoin the others and is 38 seconds ahead. The other two at 2’08.

After the sprint the peloton reforms and Jurado is caught with 29k to go and Blums with 22k.
