Stage 4
The Favourites for today are Mohoric, Lutsenko, Kinoshita and Gidich, but the latter one is the only one who still has a real chance for the GC win out of this four after the TTT.
The riders are on the road and once again it’s Pluimers to attack first. He’s 2nd in the KoM and will have an eye on the six KoM sprints today. So will KoM leader Bdadou who immediately follows his attack. With Schomber and Polanc they’re joined by two riders who’re already more renowned in the MGUCI circus.
Grieg-Maersk doesn’t seem to interested in keeping the group small as they allow Camrda, Dillier, Peng, Schir, Tesfaye Heyi and Xandri to also get away without much effort.
The next ones to take Grieg-Maersks passive approach as an invitation to attack are Van Niekerk and Vorobev.
20 km into the race the 12 attackers have come together and got a gap of 2’42. It seems we have the group of the day.
And so it is. The next point of action is the first KoM sprint where Tesfaye Heyi takes the 5 points in front of Xandri and Camrda. None of them had any points before.
The second KoM sprint is already 10 km later. This time Xandri wins (making it 8 points for him) in front of Bdadou who adds to his lead and now has 26 points. Polanc takes the last point to open his points account. Meanwhile the lead of the break is down to 1’45, so maybe we won’t have a controlled situation for long.
The team of the GC leader might not be interested in chasing the break, but some other teams are! The peloton has a horrendous pace at the moment and has already brought the gap down to 45 seconds. The first riders (mainly the TT riders) are left behind, too.
With 125 km to go the peloton has eased off a bit and the gap is back to 2’16. The high speed chase wasn’t very organized in the end as it mainly consisted of riders going flat out until they faded, a short pause and then another rider going flat out. The main result of this approach was that Schomber is back at the peloton now.
Finally Grieg-Maersk has taken over chasing duties again and their somewhat passive approach results in a lead of 4 minutes for the break at the next KoM sprint. This one is once again won by Xandri (now with 13 points) in front of Tesfaye Heyi (8) and Polanc (2). With a maximum of 15 points left on offer there are only three riders left in the competition: Bdadou (26), Pluimers (17) and Xandri (13).
Someday should tell this to the riders in the break! Schir wins the next KoM sprint followed by Polanc and Tesfaye Heyi. This means Xandri is out of contention too.
It’s not much happening for the next 40 km, but the peloton keeps a steady pace resulting in a constant reduction to 62 riders for now. With 45 km to go the race leader Korsaeth has lost contact to the main group as well as defending champion Ewan. Further in front the break still has a gap of more than 2 minutes and has lost Dillier.
Schir takes the next KoM sprint too in front of Polanc and Xandri. This means Bdadou will win the polka dots as long as he gets to the finish line in time. The sprint also resulted in some splits in the break, we’ll see if they will remain.
They do! Polanc, Schir, Tesfaye Heyi and Xandri are the four riders remaining at the front. Further back the peloton is down to 29 riders, the bigger names dropped include Izagirre, Cattaneo and Sepulveda.
26 km to go and the leading group is at the final KoM sprint, though the results won’t have any major influence. Meanwhile the attacks in the group of favourites started, though it weren’t the big names until now. Only Errazkin was able to get a small gap until now.
The break arrived at the first intermediate sprint where Tesfaye Heyi takes the 6 bonus seconds in front of Polanc and Schir. This seconds might be crucial for the minor GC placements the escapees will fight for at least.
But for some reason the break just stops working and is reeled in by the peloton shortly afterwards. It’s now a front group of 29 riders including all the major favourites.
With 17 km to go Koretzky is the next one to attack. He’s followed by Trakhov and Errazkin again.
The three got a nice gap but an attack from Mohoric led to everyone getting back together.
5 km to go and the front group is climbing the second to last hill. At the moment Vansevenant and Grosu have a gap of 20’’. Neither of them would fight for the GC with this gap.
The first 25 are back together. There’s an intermediate sprint with 2.5 km to the line where Grosu takes the maximum points (and seconds) in front of Van der Lijke and Afewerki. There are some more sprinters in this group including the green jersey wearer Vesely.
But when the final climb starts the puncheurs take over. Kinoshita, Lutsenko and Mohoric are the first to launch their sprint with still 1.6 km to go.
They got a gap at first but then Gidich launches and gets back to them. With 500 m to go it seems as everyone is at his limit though. It’s Lutsenko with a small gap to Mohoric and Kinoshita, who have a gap to Gidich. Trakhov, Wirtgen and Gaviria seem to be the last riders with a chance to still get into the mix.
And Lutsenko takes the win! Mohoric is edged out by Kinoshita for 2nd while Gidich finishes 4th in front of Wirtgen and Gaviria. This should also give the GC to the Luxembourgish while the Kazakh NC gets 2nd overall. The battle for third should be closer.
Further back Trakhov finishes 7th in front of Vakoc, Errazkin and Koretzky who completes the Top 10. Coutinho gets 11th place, followed by Bagioli and Vansevenant who were the last riders of the front group.
Congratulations to Lutsenko for the stage win!
Wirtgen indeed wins the GC.
Bdadou wins the KoM classification after a courageous race.
Vesely gets the reward for the first two stages with the green jersey.
Bagioli wins the white jersey.
And that’s not all for McCormick Pro Cycling who also win the team classification!
