Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/mg_lithuania_04.jpg

The Favourites for today are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich, but the latter one is the only one who still has a real chance for the GC win out of this four after the TTT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0075.jpg

The riders are on the road and once again it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers to attack first. He’s 2nd in the KoM and will have an eye on the six KoM sprints today. So will KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou who immediately follows his attack. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Schomber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc they’re joined by two riders who’re already more renowned in the MGUCI circus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0076.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk doesn’t seem to interested in keeping the group small as they allow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Camrda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Dillier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Peng, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schir, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Tesfaye Heyi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri to also get away without much effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0077.jpg

The next ones to take pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersks passive approach as an invitation to attack are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Vorobev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0078.jpg

20 km into the race the 12 attackers have come together and got a gap of 2’42. It seems we have the group of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0079.jpg

And so it is. The next point of action is the first KoM sprint where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Tesfaye Heyi takes the 5 points in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Camrda. None of them had any points before.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0080.jpg

The second KoM sprint is already 10 km later. This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri wins (making it 8 points for him) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou who adds to his lead and now has 26 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc takes the last point to open his points account. Meanwhile the lead of the break is down to 1’45, so maybe we won’t have a controlled situation for long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0081.jpg

The team of the GC leader might not be interested in chasing the break, but some other teams are! The peloton has a horrendous pace at the moment and has already brought the gap down to 45 seconds. The first riders (mainly the TT riders) are left behind, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0082.jpg

With 125 km to go the peloton has eased off a bit and the gap is back to 2’16. The high speed chase wasn’t very organized in the end as it mainly consisted of riders going flat out until they faded, a short pause and then another rider going flat out. The main result of this approach was that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Schomber is back at the peloton now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0083.jpg

Finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk has taken over chasing duties again and their somewhat passive approach results in a lead of 4 minutes for the break at the next KoM sprint. This one is once again won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri (now with 13 points) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Tesfaye Heyi (8) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc (2). With a maximum of 15 points left on offer there are only three riders left in the competition: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou (26), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers (17) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri (13).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0084.jpg

Someday should tell this to the riders in the break! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schir wins the next KoM sprint followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Tesfaye Heyi. This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri is out of contention too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0085.jpg

It’s not much happening for the next 40 km, but the peloton keeps a steady pace resulting in a constant reduction to 62 riders for now. With 45 km to go the race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth has lost contact to the main group as well as defending champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan. Further in front the break still has a gap of more than 2 minutes and has lost pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Dillier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0086.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schir takes the next KoM sprint too in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri. This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou will win the polka dots as long as he gets to the finish line in time. The sprint also resulted in some splits in the break, we’ll see if they will remain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0087.jpg

They do! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schir, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Tesfaye Heyi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri are the four riders remaining at the front. Further back the peloton is down to 29 riders, the bigger names dropped include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Izagirre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0088.jpg

26 km to go and the leading group is at the final KoM sprint, though the results won’t have any major influence. Meanwhile the attacks in the group of favourites started, though it weren’t the big names until now. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Errazkin was able to get a small gap until now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0089.jpg

The break arrived at the first intermediate sprint where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Tesfaye Heyi takes the 6 bonus seconds in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Polanc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Schir. This seconds might be crucial for the minor GC placements the escapees will fight for at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0090.jpg

But for some reason the break just stops working and is reeled in by the peloton shortly afterwards. It’s now a front group of 29 riders including all the major favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0091.jpg

With 17 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky is the next one to attack. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Trakhov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Errazkin again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0092.jpg

The three got a nice gap but an attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric led to everyone getting back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0093.jpg

5 km to go and the front group is climbing the second to last hill. At the moment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu have a gap of 20’’. Neither of them would fight for the GC with this gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0094.jpg

The first 25 are back together. There’s an intermediate sprint with 2.5 km to the line where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu takes the maximum points (and seconds) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki. There are some more sprinters in this group including the green jersey wearer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0095.jpg

But when the final climb starts the puncheurs take over. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric are the first to launch their sprint with still 1.6 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0096.jpg

They got a gap at first but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich launches and gets back to them. With 500 m to go it seems as everyone is at his limit though. It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko with a small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, who have a gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Trakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria seem to be the last riders with a chance to still get into the mix.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0097.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko takes the win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric is edged out by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita for 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich finishes 4th in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria. This should also give the GC to the Luxembourgish while the Kazakh NC gets 2nd overall. The battle for third should be closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0098.jpg

Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Trakhov finishes 7th in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Errazkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Koretzky who completes the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho gets 11th place, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant who were the last riders of the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0099.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko for the stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0100.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen indeed wins the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0101.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou wins the KoM classification after a courageous race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0102.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely gets the reward for the first two stages with the green jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0103.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli wins the white jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0104.jpg

And that’s not all for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McCormick Pro Cycling who also win the team classification!
