Vuelta a Espana
On paper stage 10 is another one for the sprinters because the last 90k are pretty flat. But the first 100k pack in 3 Cat 2 and a Cat 3 climb so the sprinters won’t have an easy day of it and it wouldn’t be a surprise to let see them let the break go. And that will make it an even bigger day for the break, on top of the opportunity to score KOM points. With most of the top KOM guys well up the GC from yesterday we may see a new batch of contenders emerge today.
The organizers think the sprinters will be able to control things and have all the fastmen on the favorites list:
15k gone, there has been substantial interest in the breakaway but Amaysim (Harper) and King Power (Leung) have been unwilling to let many go. Right now Cataford, Christodoulos, and Zakarin have got a 48 second lead which is the largest gap achieved so far. Soon they will start the first Cat 2, the Cimbra del Cerro de Don Jaun, 9.5k at 4.2%.
That gap proves enough to discourage further attacks and those three are the break of day.
In the pack Carapaz punctures but is quickly able to recover.
Cataford drives the pace in the last 2k and takes maximum points at the top. Zakarin second. None of these three had any points coming in.
A number of riders show interest in the remaining points. Vine jumps first and holds off Shirota and Battistella. The break lead by about 5’40, 168k to go. Shirota’s 2 points move him into third in the virtual KOM. Vine up to 5th.
155k to go for the peloton, the break’s lead is up to 7’08, King Power, Amaysim, Tryg and cycleYorkshire all near the front none pulling that hard. All the riders are on the second Cat 2 now, it is 9.9k at 4.9%.
Cataford again launches first and again holds off Zakarin. The Lidl rider up to 20 points.
Vine again edges Shirota to take 4 points (23 total), 2 for Shirota (25). The leader, Vosekalns, has 28. Gap is still around 7 minutes.
At the next climb (a Cat 3) Cataford makes it 3 for 3. He is on 26 points now and into 2nd place. The peloton is chasing harder now and have the lead down to 5’47 with 130k to go.
As the peloton reaches the final climb, the Cat 2 Venta de la Mamona (12k at 4.2%) they have the lead at 4’57. They have been letting it grow on the prior climbs, they probably can’t give up too much time on this climb. Working are Hamilton, Leung, and Nyoni.
This time Zakarin sucker punches Cataford right at the line to take maximum points. Still the Canadian scores 8 and will be the new KOM leader.
Shirota takes 4th with Jurado 5th. Vine not active. The KOM standings at the end of the day will look like this:
The peloton kept the pressure on and the gap is 4’20 with 94k to ride.
At the first sprint point in Ameriá the break don’t bother sprinting, they are all well down on GC. Their lead is 2’41 with 65k to ride. Some splits in the peloton appearing, they don’t look serious yet.
Groves and Harrison win the fields sprint for the last few points.
Christodoulos takes the 2nd sprint but the front of the chase can be seen right behind, they are just 29 seconds down.
Prasad adds some points to his total by winning the sprint for 4th ahead of Harrison. In contesting the sprint about 45 riders have split off the front of the pack, now it is over they will likely ease off and let the break have some freedom.
The break only holds out a little longer and with 24k to go Sagiv makes the catch. There are about 25 riders who have lost touch with the peloton. No major figures in that group but a lot of Puma and Moser domestiques, who see today as a day to take it easy perhaps.
10k banner, the pace isn’t high and the peloton has come back together. Chaiyasombat sitting on the front.
2.3k to go. Seibeb on the front for Tryg with Hoelgaard and Kump behind him. Demare a little further back behind Darbinyan and Hsu. On the left Drizners leads out Groves with Kragh Andersen behind him. Then Prasad, Bouglas and Stash. From here there is a short, sharp downhill before the final 1.2k of flat. Not the safest finish.
Drizners going almost 80kph as he leads them on to the flat. The Tryg boys are a little disorganized, otherwise much the same situation as before.
Under the 1k banner Groves is already in the wind and has hesitated while Darbinyan hits the front on the other side. Demare caught a bit far back so Kump, on Darbinyan’s wheel, might be in this for himself. Hsu next then Hodeg.
500 meters, Darbinyan and Kump fading as Hsu looks to take the lead. Next are Hodeg, Thijssen, Kragh Andersen and Groves.
300 meters Hsu has a slight lead over Hodeg. Prasad has found room on the right and Harrison is coming fast up the middle.
Hodeg cracks decisively and disappears but Hsu holds his sprint all the way to line and takes the win ahead of Thijssen. King Power had the best leadout today and it paid off.
Groves just edges Harrison and Prasad for the last podium spot. Kragh Andersen gets 6th.
Van Poppel gets 7th then it is Bouglas and Stash. Larsen 10th. Demare in 11th, today instead of going too early he got himself caught in traffic at the critical moment.
No change in any jerseys except for the KOM. Prasad’s lead in the points competition remains a healthy 69 points, Thijssen second.
