Vuelta a Espana
Stage 9 marks the Vuelta’s first foray into the mountains. With the finish down by the sea it might not be the one for the big GC moves although he slight kick up to the finish is perfect territory for Herklotz. Before then the riders face one each of a Cat 1, 2, 3 and 4 across just 130k. So serious points in the KOM competition for the first time. Although with limited GC gaps it is unlikely to be handed to the break.
With some longer climbs today Kudus jumps ahead of Herklotz in the favorites list.
A lot more interest in the break today and the Puma boys don’t seem too worried as 20 riders quickly scramble off the front.
And those 20 are the break of the day. With 16k gone they start the biggest climb of the day, the Cat 1, Puerto de la Ragua (13.6k at 6.5%) with a 2’52 advantage. The winner of this climb will be tied for the virtual KOM lead even if they have failed to score a single point so far.
The full list in the break is:
Preidler
Mengoulas
Agrotis
Arensman, Eekhoff
Bernard
Jurado, Sagiv, Sendeku
Mansouri, Vine
Marcos, Rubio, Voisard, Vosekalns
Postlberger
Shirota, Mike Van Dijke
Seibeb,Sleen
The most active KOM hunters so far, Vine and Jurado both represented but they have to deal with some much more serious climbers today.
6k from the top Postlberger is dropped from the break.
1.8k from the top Preidler lays down a hard tempo and reduces the break to 12. Gone are Agrotis, Sleen, Mengoulas, Sagiv, Van Dijke, Eekhoff, Marcos and Postlberger.
Mansouri, Voisard Vine and Jurado are all dropped soon after.
Vosekalns launches an attack with just under 1k to climb.
Vosekalns weakens just before the top and Shirota flies past him to take maximum points. Second for the Minon and his teammate, Rubio, takes third. Seibeb and Arensman are both dropped in the push to the line. The peloton is 6’53 down.
The 6 leaders reach the lone sprint point of the day at the bottom of the descent with a lead of 6’56. Points go to Rubio, Vosekalns and Bernard. In a warning for the future Preidler gapped the rest on the descent with Shirota and Sendeku suffering the most, but they all came back together at the bottom. None of the rest of the original break have been able to rejoin yet, Arenman is the closest at 52 seconds. 76k to ride. A number of these riders are less than 6 minutes behind on GC so the jersey is definitely moving at the moment.
67k to go for the peloton. Puma massed on the front, but the gap is up to 7’38 so they don’t seem too worried. Only a handful of riders dropped from the peloton. The break is about to start the next climb the Cat 4 El Atajillo, which s 3.2k at 7.5%. Arensman, Seibeb, Mansouri, Voisard, Vine and Jurado have all regained the front of the race.
In a close sprint Arensman takes first ahead of Vosekalns and Shirota. The latter now has sole possession of the virtual KOM jersey. In about 3k they will start the next climb the Cat 3 Collado de las Monjas (6.8k at 5.9%). The lead is up to 8’26 over the peloton. Puma seem happy to pass on the leader’s jersey.
Shortly after the climb starts Sleen, Mengoulas, Van Dijke and Agrotis are able to rejoin the front of the race.
With 1k to go in the Cat 3 and 50k in the stage the break is back down to Bernard, Preidler, Shirota, Vosekalns, Voisard, Rubio, Seibeb and Arensman. Sendeku missing out this time. Peloton at 9’56.
Bernard takes the points ahead of Shirota and Vosekalns.
KOM standings:
Voisard is dropped over the top.
Still 6 Puma riders on the front and 162 in the peloton as they cross the Cat 3. Gap is up to 11’08.
Preidler again gaps his companions on the descent before letting them come back, this has to bode will for him on the final descent. They are about to start the last climb the Hoya del Alcornoque (13.9k at 5.3%). Puma have begun to cut the gap and it is down to 10’32 but they are letting the break have this one. Of those left at the front the best on GC is Arensman at 2’34.
With Puma having cut the lead to 10 minutes with 26k to ride Latour decides it is not enough and goes on the attack. Herklotz and Kudus follow. The ISA-Hexacta rider is Sagiv coming back from the break.
Conci takes responsibility for the chase in the peloton.
20k to go for the break, 3k in the climb. The 7 survivors are Preidler, Arensman, Bernard, Rubio, Vosekalns, Shirota, and Seibeb. The next group are 3’24 down so the stage will be between these 7. The Herklotz group is at 8’56, the peloton at 9’32.
Preidler attacks with 1k to climb. Herklotz group at 8’29. Conci has pulled a 24-rider chase group clear, they trail Herklotz by 46 seconds.
Preidler takes maximum points ahead of Vosekalns, Rubo is the only one decisively dropped, he had been working for his teammate.
Shirota failed to score which means Vosekalns will take the KOM jersey into tomorrow.
10k banner for Preidler. Bernard was able to bridge back to the leading two over the top but Preidler has gapped the other two on the descent. Right now it is 18 seconds. 8’13 to the Herklotz group who are just cresting the top of the climb. The chase group 42 seconds behind them with Geoghegan Hart and Aranburu doing the chasing.
Preidler reaches sea level with a 46 second gap on Vosekalns and Bernard and 3k to ride. His descending has made the difference. Next on the road is Arensman at 1’08. He started the day with about 1’20 on Bernard and Vosekalns so he is still inline for the leader’s jersey (Preider was over 8 minutes down at the start of the day and is not in contention for Red). The Herklotz group is at 8’35 and still holding their lead of the rest.
Preidler wins Stage 9 of the Vuelta in stylish fashion. Another stage win for Aker-MOT.
Vosekalns edges Bernard for second 47 seconds down. He was as strong as Preidler on the climbs but not able to match him on the descent. He will get the KOM jersey with Preidler sitting second. Arensman takes 4th just 1’08 down he is new race leader.
Shirota, Seibeb and Rubio are the next three home at 2’03.
Then there is a long gap to where Agrotis takes 8th ahead of Voisard. The next two in are Lidl teammates Mansouri and Vine. The Herklotz group continues to maintain about 1 minute over the chasers on the road.
Herklotz takes 14th with the other two right behind him on 8’50 . The rest of the contenders come in at 9’55.
Vosekalns and Bernard move up to 2nd and 3rd with Seibeb, Rubio and Preidler all also in top GC spots. Herklotz is the best placed of the real GC men in 7th, 5’08 down. Arensman also holds the young rider’s jersey. Minions benefit from the break to take a big lead in the Teams jersey. Only the points jersey is not impacted as Prasad holds on to that.
A flat stage tomorrow so Arensman will get to enjoy some relaxing time in red.
