Olympia’s Tour - Stage 3

Olympia’s Tour - Stage 3 (Heers–Bergen op Zoom)

We are back again here at IESN1 for the coverage of the 3rd stage of the Olympia’s Tour. This time we have yet another stage where a bunch sprint will decide the outcome - we will start from Heers and will finish in Bergen op Zoom. So far Gjensidige and Tafjord - two of the overall classification favorites and two of the most likely favorites tomorrow, had taken the honors in the first two stages with the former’s Van Moer leading in all 3 classifications, though in the points is co-leader with Waersted. And let’s see what the panel had set for us?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%202/1.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff will have another chance to meet the expectations of the bookies here, but as we’ve seen yesterday - there is no such thing as a sure thing and the sprints in recent years have been a roulette. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Marin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Rojus will look to record another good result which could propel them into wearing the green jersey tomorrow. But right now we’re heading over the commentary booth to give us coverage of the action from Heers

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/2.jpg

It’s once again a fine and sunny day here in Heers as the riders are gearing up for the 3rd stage which had just began

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/3.jpg

And we have our first break of the day - and would you know it, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Yamada and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Barbero try their luck once again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/4.jpg

Babymetal have sent another rider in the breakaway with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Arashiro joining them. Behind the leading trio it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Ballerstedt from Adidas, who is trying to join in as well.

Screenshot missing, sorry Sad

Barbero tried to win the intermediate sprint, but was denied by Arashiro. Both make some gap to Yamada and Ballerstedt and the gap to the peloton had already exceeded the 2 minute mark

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/6.jpg

The small break within the break has been short lived as the quartet is back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/7.jpg

It’s pretty quiet over at the peloton with the usual suspects controlling the tempo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/8.jpg

The breakaway now has passed the 6 minute mark

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/9.jpg

And what an unfortunate moment for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Kelly - the Barbados champion has got a puncture and will be trying to return to the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/10.jpg

Arashiro has won the second and final intermediate sprint ahead of Barbero. The gap is now just a little over 4 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/11.jpg

The peloton have become recently active in the last few kilometers - at one point the gap was over 6 minutes, but now they’ve cut it by nearly half with 60 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/12.jpg

We can now see how small the gap between the 4-man break and the peloton as the time gap is hovering around the 2 minute mark with less than 35 km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/13.jpg

Arashiro is trying to make a move, but all it did was dropping his teammate Yamada and it will be only a matter of time before he gets reeled in into the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/14.jpg

Only Barbero seems to be coping wth the pace of the Japanese rider as Ballerstedt is also struggling

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/15.jpg

The German has managed to claw his was back in the lead pack though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/16.jpg

Yamada is now back in the peloton as the break only has a minute ahead

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/17.jpg

With nearly 15 km remaining Yudai Arashiro is trying to be ahead as much as he can. But is he only delaying the inevitable?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Colbrelli has been dropped from the peloton!!! This will really dent his chances for decent stage result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/19.jpg

And with 8 km to the finish line the brave Arashiro has finally been caught. But let’s give hime an an applause.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/20.jpg

And the sprint has commenced - we’re seeing familiar faces from the last stages here, but who will be on top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Olympia/Stage%203/21.jpg

At first glance it seemed that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Waersted will get back-to-back stage wins, but no - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik beats him to the finish line. What a finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png again gives his team a reason to be joyful as the Costa Rica champ is 3rd. Hilcona’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Krieger is 4th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png McLay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Rojus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Oka rounding up the Top 10. Degenkolb this time is just outside Top 10 - yet another disappointing finish for the veteran. Another pre-stage favorite, Zariff, is 13th.

Unfortunately, the cameras missed the podium ceremonies, but nothing has changed at the top with Van Moer still leading the overall classification and the young riders classification. Waersted’s 2nd place today puts him in the lead of the points classification. Podium Ambition still leads in the teams standings before the 18 km TTT stage tomorrow in Utrecht where we can see some movement in the standings. But for now, we have to say goodbye.
