Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/mg_lithuania_01.jpg

The Favourites for the first stage are – to no one’s surprise – the best sprinters in the field. We can expect a fierce battle between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu. But given some of the previous sprint results this season it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see those three finish outside of the Top 10 and a winner no one has on his list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0001.jpg

And the riders are on the road and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers is the first one to attack. No one follows this initial attack, but there are some counter attacks going on. Right now he’s chased by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou and his own teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann. The peloton doesn’t seem willing to let more than three riders go though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0002.jpg

And without further attackers the three come together at the foot of the first KoM climb. None of them has much left in the tank for now, so no real accelerations are possible and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou takes the 5 points just because he’s the strongest hill rider. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers gets 2nd for 3 points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann takes the last point. The three now have a gap of about 2 minutes to the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0003.jpg

Their gap quickly increases afterwards and the lead is over 4 minutes at the next KoM sprint. And this time it really is a sprint, though the result is exactly the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0004.jpg

The gap went over 7 minutes but is now back to 6’30. The break gets to the first intermediate sprint and the result is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou first, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann third once again. The Fastned duo keeps losing to their fellow PCT rival, but they surely get valueable screen time. All three riders are U25 eligible, so apart from the KoM lead the break also fights for the lead in the U25 competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0005.jpg

The next intermediate sprint and the same result once again. But this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann seems to have lost contact. The gap is still 4’40 with 85 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0006.jpg

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann has made it back further back the chase has led to a first split. The two major names fallen back are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant. The split is finally undone, but those two will have to be on their toes in the kilometres to come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0007.jpg

The third KoM sees a new result: Now it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann has to fight once again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0008.jpg

But it’s just an exception. KoM number 4 sees the usual result again. Further back the short KoM hills lead to splits repeatedly. At the moment it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant who’s behind again, but earlier we also saw pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko in the need to get back to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0009.jpg

It’s not the same picture, but the same result as nearly always in the third and last intermediate sprint. That should give pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou a good shot at the U25 jersey and the 2nd place in the GC if he finishes with the pack in the end. The KoM should also follow eventually, so the young Moroccan should get a nice points haul out of this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0010.jpg

The three leaders still have a lead of 1’45 with 32 km to go. But more importantly the chase results in some split again. And there are quite some big names caught on the wrong side! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric haven’t learned from the previous splits and are in the first group behind the peloton, where they are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant is even further back. The splits probably won’t last, but some managers should be concerned what their leaders are risking here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0011.jpg

The second to last KoM sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou (23 points) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Pluimers (17 points) which means the Moroccan will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann (5 points) has contact once again and will be back in the chasing peloton soon. There have been splits again, and the same big names are concerned by them. We’ll see later how that’ll end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0012.jpg

The break is brought back with 17 km to go, but the pace stays high and though all the groups got together the peloton is still pretty much stretched out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0013.jpg

The last KoM is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Toupalik, who already has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria on his wheel. With more than 8 km that’s in no way optimal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0014.jpg

2 km to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij already leads out his sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu. All the other fast men are right behind them, waiting for the Romanian NC to launch his sprint too early and use his slipstream nonetheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu launches with 1.2 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria already went by his side, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Silvestre are the first chasers. Behind them is a tight bunch of other sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0016.jpg

600 m to the line and the last corner brings everyone close together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan was the fastest and took over the lead before everyone had to slow down for the sharp corner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0017.jpg

And behind the corner a short ascent of about 6% leads to the line. 200 m to go and 7 riders are pretty much on par – with 10 more riders still in the mix. Behind those there’s a small gap to the field that is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0018.jpg

100 m to the line and now it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely in front, but it’s still pretty close.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0019.jpg

And the Czech starts to celebrate his win early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0020.jpg

Behind him it’s hard to call as second to 9th place are literally on a line. At least pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Kennett‘s 10th place is easy to call. The jury sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan in 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu in 3rd. Behind them it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel in 4th to 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov in 7th to 9th. Who couldn’t have told that?
In the end only seven riders are awarded a gap – including the three breakaway riders, who lose their U25 prospects for today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely also leads the GC and the points classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bdadou will wear the polka dots. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Bjerg is the U25 leader while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Minions are the best team so far.
