Vuelta a Espana
Stage 8 is a 200k hilly stage to Sierra de Cazorla, only one Cat 3 climb along the way but quite a few bumps. The finish however is steep Cat 2 climb. Two sprint points again.
Now boys and girls can you say Herklotz?
More interest in the break today and with 10k gone there are 10 riders off the front including Aranburu. Puma and Rabobank don’t seem to think that is a good idea.
16k gone Van Poppel shuts down all the attackers except Sweeck. Battistella and Eekhoff immediately counter.
Kamp joins the other two and those three form the break of the day. Rabobank chased at first but then decided 4 riders out front was OK. Sweeck was passed and dropped by the 3 counter-attackers and is trying to recover. Menicucci lets down his countrymen today although he was in the initial attack of 10.
Sweeck rides alone for a long while but is caught by the peloton with 140k to ride and the gap to the other three at 3’26.
Battistella wins the first sprint followed by Kamp and Eekhoff. Peloton at 3’48.
Only Larsen is awake in the pack and he takes 4th (there was a climb to the sprint point that may have discouraged some others). 5th goes to Nyoni leading the pack.
5k to go to the second sprint, 77k in the stage. Rabobank, Binance, Trgy and cycleYorkshire on the front today. The break have 3’06. Shortly after the sprint the peloton reach the Cat 3 climb. It is 13k at 3.8%.
The order among the break at the second sprint is Battistela, Eekhoff, Kamp.
In the pack it is Demare in front of Hsu
With 5k to climb in the Cat 3 the peloton have the lead down to 1’26. Rabobank again heavily invested, Goldstein on the front at the moment.
Eekhoff is dropped on the climb but it is very close between Battistella and Kamp for first. The Italian is awarded first.
Just short of the top Van der Poel, Storer, and Blums launch an attack from the peloton. Kmieliauskas leading the chase.
With 47k to go the three attackers reach the front of the race, dragging Eekhoff back to the front with them. They have 1’19 over a peloton being led by Binance (Benito), Carlsberg (Forssell), Tryg (Iversen) and Rabobank (Goldstein).
22k to go, it isn’t looking good for the 6 leaders as their gap is down to 41 seconds. It is pretty steadily uphill from here to the finish. The final climb is 2k at an average of 8%.
The breakaway is caught with 18k to go.
4.7k to go. The peloton is on an uncategorized climb that immediately precedes the finishing climb. Evenepoel driving the pace. Still 185 riders in the peloton but if you aren’t near the front now you won’t have a chance at stage glory.
Evenpoel leads them on the the final climb. Demare on his wheel, mostly sprinters behind that, maybe not hard enough for the GC guys. After all the work of his team, Formolo is a little out of position, just behind the red jersey.
1.2k to go Demare has a gap. Next three are Groves, Hsu, and Larsen. Herklotz thinks it is a GC day, he is up to 4th, then Sosa, Evenpoel and Hodeg.
Under the 1k banner Herklotz catches Demare. The sprinters mostly falling away but Groves still hanging on to 3rd. Then it is Sosa, Paulinho and Formolo.
700 meters. Herklotz ahead of Formolo. Latour, Kudus and Aranburu have fought their way into contention on the right.
400 meters for the Red Jersey. Wellens the latest name to join the group fighting for 3rd. Warchol behind him.
200 meters for Herklotz. Kudus up to third, he doesn’t want his rival getting a gap. Most of the other top GC guys are now with the group behind including Morton and Geoghegan Hart.
Herklotz does the predictable again and wins Stage 8. Two stage wins for him.
Formolo pays back his team with a nice second. Kudus takes 3rd, he will lose bonus seconds plus Herklotz gets an 8 second gap.
Wellens is 4th then Latour, Sosa, Aranburu and Warchol.
Choi and Godoy wrap up the top ten. Other than Herklotz no gaps are awarded until 178th.
Herklotz lead in the GC goes up to 37 seconds over Kudus who moves back up to 2nd ahead of Geoghegan Hart. Prasad, Hayter and Cedevita all hold on to their jerseys. But the 10 points at the finish are enough to give Herklotz the KOM jersey.
Tomorrow the race hits the mountains for the first time.
