Vuelta a Espana
Stage 7 is another hilly stage. 195k into Córdoba. All the climbing comes in the last 30k with two cat 3 peaks, one at 166k and the second at 182. Two sprint points come much earlier in the stage.
Demare leads the favorites but Herklotz also well up the list.
Again, not much of a fight for the break. All 4 names are regulars: Vine, Tim Van Dijke, Jurado and Menicucci. Vine wearing the KOM jersey, perhaps today’s stage will separate him and Jurado a little more. These four have 2’15 with 18k gone. 2nd on GC Geoghegan Hart has punctured but will have plenty of time to get back in the pack.
Van Dijke leads them through the first sprint point.
In the pack Groves just edges Prasad for the last point.
The second sprint is at the top of a short rise on a brief cobbled section, that doesn’t phase Van Dijke he again takes first. The pack is at 4’44 with 130k to go.
None of the others seem interested in contesting the last point with Demare, given the hill, he easily takes it.
Tryg (Nyoni), King Power (Leung), Rabobank (Goldstein), Carlsberg (Krigbaum) and Binance (Mengoulas, just dropping back) work steadily to control the gap and with 50k to go they have it down to 1’39. 19k to the start of the first climb. 27 riders have split off the front of the peloton but it doesn’t seem like it will last.
It is grupo compacto as the peloton hits the bottom of the first climb. Looks like the tie for the KOM lead will persist. The climb is the SerranÃa del Sol (4.4k at 6.9%).
Rabobank control the pace up the climb and their domestiques take all the points. From here they descend and then tackle the tougher second climb, the Serro San Cristóbal, 8.3k at 8.7.
Kaczmarek leads the peloton on to the Cerro San Cristóbal. About 50 riders were split off the back over the top of the last climb. Harrison is the only sprinter to miss the split while 9th placed Christodoulos is the highest place GC rider. A handful of other TT specialists in the top 20 on GC are also among the dropped riders but no notable GC riders. Van Poppel well back in the peloton so Rabobank are working for Formolo.
Rabobank drive the pace for the first few kilometers and with 5.4k to climb Fomolo attacks. Kaczmarek closest to him.
4k to climb Aranburu has joined Fomolo on the attack. Peloton at 13 seconds led by Hansen.
3k to climb, Hansen can’t close the gap so Latour launches a counter.
Latour’s attack fades and with 2k to climb the gap is up to 42 seconds as the peloton hesitates. Only now has Stork emerged to lead the chase.
Formolo and Aranburu go over the top with a 46 second lead. Only a tired Stork chasing. Formolo is the closer of the two on GC at 1’21, probably not a threat to Herklotz’ GC lead. 12k to ride mostly downhill.
The pack splits over the top and the front group of 32 led by Mick Van Dijke closes to 29 seconds behind the leaders, who have 5k to go. Almeida, Carapaz, and Geoghegan Hart are the bigger names not in the front chase group.
2.4k to go Aranburu has been sitting on and it looks like the front 2 will be caught. The 32 chasers are at 9 seconds. 36 seconds further back most of the rest of the peloton is back together. It doesn’t look like there will be much in the way of time gaps today. Among the sprinters Demare, Groves, Thijssen, amd Prasad are all in the first chase group, but only Demare is well positioned.
1.6k to and Paulinho launches an attack. Demare just behind him. The front groups all together now in a group of 140, but only the riders near the front will be in a position to contest the sprint.
Under the 1k banner Demare almost past Paulinho, Storer and Latour are next.
500 meters. Demare has the lead. Prasad, wearing Green, has made it to the front and is making a late charge on the left.
Demare has plenty of time to celebrate, he did poorly on the sprint stages but today was tailormade for him and he took advantage. The sprint for 2nd is close, Thijssen, Formolo and Sivakov all getting involved
Another great ride by Prasad as he snatches 2nd. Third will be close.
Sivakov is a surprise name to grab some bonus seconds for 3rd. He just beats Formolo and Thijssen.
6th to 10th go to Latour, Aranburu, Paulinho, Hoelgaard and Storer.
The first 140 riders are given s.t, Christodoulos is not one of them so he drops out of the GC top 10 but that is the closest thing to a significant change in any of the rankings.
Another hilly stage tomorrow.
