Vuelta a Espana
Stage 6 of the Vuelta is a Team Time Trial. It is almost 32k of flat roads around the city of Cádiz
Herklotz took the leader’s jersey yesterday, the organizers think his squad is better in the TTT than either of his current closest GC competitors, Kudus (+0’20) or Sivakov (+0’43) so he will hope to still be wearing it at the end of the day.
Because they are last in the team’s competition, Puma are first on the start line of the TTT.
Behind them are Minions.
Then it is Aker with the Green Jersey in their ranks.
ISA-Hexacta are next, they also have a jersey, it is on the back of Jurado.
Evonik are next. No jersey for them, in fact they have spent most of the their time hanging out at the back of the peloton. Puma and Minions have reached the first time check. Puma are 54 seconds up on the men in overalls.
Gazelle only brought 6 riders to the race, that might handicap them today. Aker and ISA-Hexacta have passed the first time check, they are 46 and 22 seconds down on Puma, respectively.
Evonik loses 35 seconds to the Germans at the time check, Gazelle are last so far at 0+58. Wildcard team Tryg are the next across. They are the best of the rest so far, 20 seconds down. They have just dropped their 8th rider. Puma have reached the finish in a time of 33’39.
Grieg have had a quiet race so far but they are going well so far today. Just 15 seconds down on Puma.
Lidl are next. They take over 2nd at the first time check, 14 seconds down.
(sorry missed this shot)
ELCO have 13k to ride as they cross the causeway, they just dropped Bouglas. They were 32 seconds down at the time check.
At the same spot MOL still look very organized and this is reflected in their first half time which was just 2 seconds slower than Puma. 3 more teams have reached the finish the closest to Puma is ISA-Hexacta at 44 seconds.
Amaysim are down to 6 riders as they cross the causeway but their first half time was very solid, just 4 seconds off the pace.
10k banner for Sony – Force India, looks like they are about to drop Carboni.
2k further back King Power are already down to 5 but GC hope Sosa is still with them. They were 14 seconds down at the first time check, good enough for 5th at the moment.
Tinkoff have a long history of success in this discipline. They look very organized as they pass the 10k banner. Sivakov started the day 3rd on GC but he seems unlikely to gain ground as they were 3 seconds down on Puma at the time check.
Ten teams have reached the finish, Lidl are closest to Puma, 16 seconds down.
ZARA have beautiful wheels and they had a beautiful time at the first time check, they were 4 seconds up on Puma. At the finish MOL have moved in to second, 8 seconds behind Puma.
Rabobank were 28 seconds down at the first time check.
5k left for Polar, they have the best time at the first check 4 seconds up on ZARA. cycleYorkshire have also passed the first time check the were 5 seconds down on Polar. Morton will have marked this stage as an opportunity to gain ground on his rivals, particularly Kudus.
At the finish Tinkoff have moved into 3rd, 9 seconds down on Puma and Sony Force India into 5th 23 seconds down.
Carlsberg still look good with 6k to go. But looks can be deceiving they were 37 seconds down at the time check (17th). Meanwhile first Zara and then Polar have beaten Puma at the finish. Right now Polar are the leaders with a 7 second edge on Zara and 13 on Puma.
Morton is the 6th rider as cycleYorkshire reach the finish. He will have to hope that gap doesn’t count against him. They put together a nce second half and finish 3 seconds down on Polar but 10 seconds ahead of Puma. A small gain for Morton on Herklotz but every little helps.
Favorites Cedevita have passed the time check and taken over the lead by 6 seconds on Polar.
The next team to finish will be EA, they didn’t send their A team to the Vuelta and they were 23 seconds down at the time check. Moser have passed the time check 20 seconds down on Cedevita. Which means Kudus is losing 9 seconds to Morton and 6 to Herklotz at the halfway point.
EA finisish the course in 7th, 28 seconds down.
Cedevita are all still together as they reach the finish.
And they are the new leaders, 13 seconds ahead of Polar. A very nice ride from the boys in orange.
Kudus is on the front as Moser reach the finishing line. 6th place for them 27 seconds down, they put in a nice second half and gain ground to finish on the same time as Puma. Kudus will be happy with that.
Binance are the last team on the course. They were not expected to contend and were in 11th at the time check. They finish a little better, in 9th, 40 seconds down.
In the end the TTT will not have a big impact on the final GC. The top 8 teams which include most of the top contenders finish within 36 seconds of each other, although Cedevita win by a solid margin of 13 seconds.
Herklotz holds the GC lead but Cedevita’s efforts move Geoghegan Hart into second with Kudus dropping to 3rd. No change in the points or KOM while cycleYorkshire are good enough to move Hayter back into Whilte and Cedevita are good enough to retake the team’s lead.
