Vuelta a Espana
Stage 5 marks the first time the GC riders need to pay more attention as the riders face a summit finish on the Rock of Gibraltar. The final climb is not that long at just 3.4k but it averages 7.7% with stretches up to 18%, it will award Cat 3 points. Before that the stage features 178k of bumpy terrain including 3 Cat 4s and a Cat 3, plus two sprint points.
This is the kind of stage where Herklotz will hope, or maybe expect, to take small chunks of time and bonus seconds and bank them for the big climbs later. He tops the favorites list which is dominated by GC riders.
A different kind of stage but the same relatively light interest in the break. Three riders quickly get a gap of 2’27, they are Vine, Jurado and, of course, Menicucci.
The first climb of the day is the Cat 4 Puerto de Ojén (4.6k at 3.2%). With most of the KOM points coming in the first two-thirds of the stage one of the breakaway riders should take the KOM jersey. Vine is the best climber of the three.
But Vine is third at the top with Menicucci taking the win. The later climbs are harder so perhaps his advantage will matter more there.
At the second Cat 4 Vine jumps early and holds on. The order is the reverse of the first climb, so these three plus Mengoulas are in a virtual tie for the KOM jersey. 120k to go the peloton is 3’24 behind.
98k to go. Puma and Aker have been taking responsibility to control the break and have kept the lead around 4 minutes. Now Rabobank has come to the front to help out. Ahead the break are about to start the longest climb of the day, the Cat 3 Puerto de las Palomas, which is 5.9k at an average of 5%.
Vine leads most of the way up but Jurado comes around him in the last 50 meters to take maximum points and the KOM lead.
On the final Cat 4 Vine is able to hang on for first ahead of Jurado, those two will be tied for the KOM lead. The peloton is at 3’11 with Aker (Andersen and Klaris) and Rabobank (Van Poppel) on the front. 75k to ride.
The bumpy terrain causes some splits. Aker’s Preidler (Bib 186) is caught out and is in a group 1’23 down on the peloton. The organizers had him marked out as a favorite, Aker must not agree since they are currently leading the peloton ahead. Still things should come back together.
Menicucci easily wins the first sprint. The peloton, which is all back together, is at 2’28. Binance contributing to the chase.
Prasad alertly grabs a couple of points from the peloton. He will likely lose the Red today but should hold on to the Green jersey.
30k to go Aker has been driving hard and the gap is just 45 seconds but it doesn’t look like they will be able to close them down before the 2nd sprint point which is just ahead.
Menicucci again wins the sprint from the break. But Prasad is unable to add more points as he is beaten by Demare and Harrison.
The catch is made with 19k to go.
As the peloton reaches the 5k banner (1.7 to the start of the climb) it is Rabobank (Evenpoel), Carlsberg (Krigbaum) and Tryg (Iversen) on the front. The peloton is mostly together but a group of 38 is off the back. A few TTers in the current GC top 20 riders are in that group but they won’t have expected to survive this stage.
Sosa goes to the front as the riders begin to wind their way up to the finish. Aranburu on his wheel.
Just under 2k to go, Sosa and Aranburu pull a 7 rider group clear, the other 5 are Storer, Paulinho, Hsu, Herklotz and Kudus. Morton, Wellens, Formolo, and Demare are in the front row of the chase behind. The steepest sections are from here on in.
1.1k to Herklotz reaches the front. It looks like the inevitable is about to occur. Not surprisingly Hsu has been dropped from the group.
800 meters. Kudus is closest to Herklotz, the time gaps are fluid right now the front 14 are showi as having a gap on the rest.
500 meters, Herklotz and Kudus have 17 seconds on a group of 13. The gradients ease off towards the top.
200 meters, Kudus has been able to stay with Herklotz but doesn’t seem able to come around him.
The inevitable occurs, Herklotz wins Stage 5. With the bonus and time gap he will take over the leaders jersey. Kudus takes 2nd, he will be pleased to only concede the time bonus difference. He will be second on GC as well.
A brave ride nets Aranburu 3rd 18 seconds down. Morton 4th, Sosa 5th, Wellens is 6th.
Formolo, Latour, Sivakov, and Godoy complete the top 10. The riders from 3rd through Choi, in 14th, all finish on the same time.
Tenorio and Almeida are probably the biggest names to lose more time, they finish with the next group 44 seconds behind the leader.
Prasad keeps the points jersey, Peak does well to hold on to the young rider’s jersey, but he is on the same time as Almeida who is the long-term favorite for that jersey. Jurado gets to wear the KOM jersey. Binance leads the team’s competition.
