Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 is the first chance for the sprinters. 162k and a couple of sprint points. No KOMs yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare tops the favorites list, the PT teams not fielding sprinters here would like to see him go well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/favs.jpg

The first 3 attackers quickly get a gap and form the break of the day. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Marcos, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Menicucci. The Gazelle rider checks two boxes for the reporter, being both a former McCormick rider and a San Marinese. The former means I don’t have to work to hard for a gratuitous McCormick shout out and the latter confirms my experience that you can’t have a breakaway without a rider from San Marino. Menicucci is the only San Marinese in the race so he will have to work hard to keep that rule going.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/01.jpg

The order is Van Dijke, Marcos, Menicucci at the first sprint. Their lead is 3’43 with 98k to go. The chasing is being done by Trgy, Rabobank and King Power

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/02.jpg

Multiple teams do leadouts for the last two positions. Ultimately, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare launches a long way out and holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak to take 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/03.jpg

75k to go, the peloton let the lead drift out after the sprint point but now it is down to 3’14. On the front are Rabobank (Gesink, Dima), King Power (Granigan, Leung) and Tryg (Nyoni, Sleen). I am sure getting to chase a break with Noah Grangan is a new high point in Gesink's career.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/04.jpg

50k for the break and their lead is down to 2’08. In 15k we have the second sprint point to liven things up. Did you know that of the 33,660 people who live in San Marino only 6 have never been in the breakaway at a cycling race? All 6 ride for Sony - Force India.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/05.jpg

Menicucci, Van Dijke, Marcos is the order at the sprint. The peloton has split in the charge to the sprint point, the front group of 50 riders is just 49 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Harrison takes 4th and his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Sagiv 5th. The peloton is currently split into 4 pieces but it should regroup now the sprint point is gone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/07.jpg

20k to go for the peloton they trail the leaders by 45 seconds. There are still 76 riders 1’31 off the back who have been chasing for a while. No really big names caught behind but a lot of support climbers/stage hunters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin (to name two of many) as well as IT riders in the GC top 10 including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Howson (4th on GC), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Oliveira (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kukrle (7), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Viennet (9), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Mullen (10)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/08.jpg

13k to go and it is over for the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Goldstein on the front. The second group is now 1’49 back with Gazelle doing the most work to close it although their leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Warchol is safely in the front group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Bernard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Vosekalns tried to bridge across on their own and got within 25 seconds but couldn’t close the gap and are now falling back to the chase group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/09.jpg

5k to go. Rabobank still driving things with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Tolhoek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel on the front. The Tryg group are getting organized on the right, That is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare. The chase group split and about 30 more riders bridged up but there are still a number of groups behind. None of the riders mentioned above have been able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/10.jpg

2.4k. The Rabobank train is swamped and Hoelgaard is just dropping off for Tryg. On the right King Power have moved up. Their train is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Granigan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Darbinyan, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/11.jpg

1.2k to go Demare is in the wind, which seems like a bad idea. Behind him is Formolo who has lost Van Poppel. Then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Stash, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Larsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Hansen. Not exactly a who’s who of sprinters. Darbinyan is still in front of Hsu but they have ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/12.jpg

700 meters Demare has a bike length over Kragh Andersen. Stash, Hansen and Larsen next, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Hodeg just behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel in the next row. The same riders are still gapped behind but the gaps are small.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/13.jpg

200 meters, Demare is swamped. Hodeg on the front, Van Poppel moving fast on the far right. Hansen also still in it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Bouglas getting himself into the fight in the middle but will need to find a lane. The front 15 have a gap and race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen is trying to close it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel wins stage 2, he showed a lot of patience by letting his sprint train go and keeping his powder dry. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Hodeg hangs on for 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Harrison and a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Hansen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Bouglas takes 5th ahead of the fast closing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Larsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Stash. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu. Andersen faded badly while Hsu never really got going. Both did better than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare who settles for 11th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/16.jpg

Bonus seconds move Van Poppel up to 3rd on GC and he takes over the points jersey.

In the end only the last 38 riders lose time but that includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Howson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Oliveira, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Kukrle who all drop out of the top 10 on GC. The Polar duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Viennet (9), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Mullen (10) are able to rejoin the main group and hold their places for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Hayter is still the best young rider and Cedevita the top team.
