Stage 4
The best prologue riders will compete for the stage win today and they’ll aim to get into the Top 10 of the GC along the way, but with 58 seconds on GC leader Kamberaj, the overall win is basically out of the question for all but one rider. Boudat trails the Albanian by 22 seconds, which isn’t easy to take back on just 4.2 kilometers, but it’s not impossible, either.
Hopkins is the first rider on the road and he sets an early benchmark at 4’52. A few minutes later comes Dzervus (pictured) to best that by 6 seconds. Knotten and Batmunkh comes close, but trail the Babymetal rider by 2 and 3 seconds, respectively.
Top favorite Van Moer is on the road early and he improves the leading time to 4’41, a lead of 5 seconds over Dzervus. Leading by around 11 to 12 seconds to the likes of Hopkins or Jussaume, we can see that the gaps really won’t be all that big today, which isn’t a good sign for those trying to displace the sprinters from the higher GC spots.
Vanderpool is the next rider to enter the provisional Top 3, one second ahead of Dzervus. Podium Ambition teammates Cole and Kelly both do decently well and finish in the provisional Top 10.
Rabitsch and Balloni (pictured) are the next notable time trialists to cross the line. They’re tied on time in 4th place, 6 seconds behind Van Moer.
After the first 50 riders, these are the provisional standings. In the secondary competition for the best young riders, Arias Villanueva currently is second in line behind the leader.
Oka is one of the few riders believed to be able to challenge Van Moer and he does! They’re tied for the best time, with Oka being ranked ahead for the moment, but we know these things can sometimes be subject to change after the stage.
Not much of note happens for a while, other than Matthews moving into provisional 8th place at + 6. Then, Aregger misses the best time by just 2 seconds and moves into provisional third place.
A few minutes later, Predatsch ties that time with a very strong effort. His teammate Magnussen is just one second slower, he’s fifth for the moment, but himself is tied by Hennis just moments later!
Reddish enters the provisional Top 10, then Frame comes through. He matches Oka and Van Moer at 4’40 but is put into first place!
21 riders have collected bonus seconds over the course of the race. This is the provisional stage rankings before those 21 come into play.
The first of them is Hamza, one of the top favorites for the stage. He got one bonus second from a breakaway and that could be crucial for GC positions, because he finishes at 4’40 as well! He’s listed in third place, though.
Dumoulin had collected three bonus seconds, and now he trails the leading four by … three seconds! He’ll have to wait to see where this lands him in the GC. Shortly after, Tivani comes to the line. Trailing the leaders by just 9 seconds, that could be enough to land him in the Top 20 in the GC.
Then it’s Rojus at the finish. He had definitely hoped for more than just 10 bonus seconds from the three sprint stages, but he’s 11th for the moment and at just 4 seconds behind Hamza, he takes the provisional lead in the GC and the young riders classification.
He loses the GC lead pretty quickly though to Minali, who was 8 seconds ahead of him before today and is 7 seconds slower on the stage. He was 8th in the GC originally, but moves up at least a little, because Scott, previously second in the U25 classification and 7th overall, loses over 35 seconds.
Then, the U25 classification is decided: Walls had 12 seconds on Rojus and he’s got no problem defending that, finishing 10 seconds behind the current leaders. Next comes 5th place Marin, who’s 3 seconds slower but takes the provisional GC lead thanks to his superior sprint results.
Liepins, 4th overall, has no chance to challenge those guys, but somewhat limiting his losses to 31 seconds, he gives himself a chance to remain in the Top 10 of the GC.
Then comes Boudat. Looking at the gaps so far, he won’t be able to take the GC, but can he challenge for the stage win? Not quite. A time of 4’41 gives him 5th place on the day.
He does move up to 2nd overall, though, as stage 2 winner Sanikwathi can’t keep up with him on a time trialing bike. Finishing 17 seconds behind the leaders, he just manages to stay ahead of Marin in third place, though.
To conclude the race, Kamberaj comes to the finish line. He loses just 11 seconds to Boudat, and thanks to being clearly the best sprinter of the race (finishing 2nd, 3rd and 1st), he takes home a very deserved overall victory.
In the end, the jury checks the milliseconds of the leading riders and decides that Atsushi Oka is actually the winner of the stage! Gutting for Frame, but second is still a strong result. Despite having the stage winner and Hamza in third place, SEE Turtles is second in the teams classification, that one goes to Team Würth MODYF, who get three riders into the Top 10 of the stage, led by Predatsch.
In the GC, Hamza and Frame are the only time trialists to crack the Top 10, coming in 8th and 9th. Kamberaj also takes home the points classification by 2 points over Boudat.
