Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/01.jpg

Moving from Annapolis to Wilimington, the riders cross the Chesapeake Bay today on their way to the third and final sprint finish before the concluding short time trial tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/02.jpg

There’s a lot of interest in the breakaway today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Skala, one of the three riders tied with 5 points at the top of the mountain classification, is leading the first group in an effort to win the KoM jersey outright. In this second trio, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Arashiro, the only other rider currently ahead of the peloton with any points (3).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/03.jpg

As we near the mountain sprint, three more riders have joined what is now a united group, and they include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Hamza (1 mountain point) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Knotten (3).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/04.jpg

But they don’t get close enough to the front to compete for the points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Cole leads the way, then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Arashiro versus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Skala for the polkadots!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/05.jpg

Despite being a decent sprinter on paper, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Arashiro can’t keep up here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Skala takes 3 points and will win the mountain classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Cole moves up to joint second alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Allegaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Knotten (whose teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Bourgoyne takes the final point here). The peloton is close behind and judging from previous stages, they won’t like such a big breakaway, so let’s see how this situation unfolds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/06.jpg

An 11 rider breakaway was indeed never going to happen, so it took a further attack from three of them to form the group of the day without their former companions. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Watts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Dumoulin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Bourgoyne cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which at the time of its construction in the 1950s was the longest continuous over-water steel structure in the world (even if it doesn’t look super steely here), with some two minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Dumoulin is still a very solid time trialist and bonus seconds today could be beneficial in a push for a good GC result tomorrow. Unfortunately, he’s not very fast, so it’s just one bonus second at the first intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/08.jpg

He does get the better of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Watts at the second intermediate sprint though, adding two seconds this time. Their lead over the peloton, which had peaked at almost 6 minutes, is down to 4 and a half by this point, with 74 kilometers left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/09.jpg

Like yesterday’s group, they don’t make it easy for the peloton, which only brings them back with around 8 kilometers to go. The usual teams are in control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/10.jpg

With just under 3 kilometers to go, only Stela-Vita’s train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj looks in decent shape. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Frame is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt’s last man, but they’ve let the Albanian team get between them. GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat is in a good position two to three wheels behind Kamberaj, while yesterday’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi has some more ground to gain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Merlier takes over with 1.5 kilometers to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt tries to follow him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj instead. All of the major sprinters are bunched together behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj launches with 800 meters to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali is next to him, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi accelerates on the right, while yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat has been boxed in!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj leads the way. He’s been the most consistent over the last two days, but lacks the top result – is this his moment?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/14.jpg

We’re headed for another very close finish. Looks like it’s between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali won’t make it, can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/16.jpg

No! After a well-timed leadout, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Xhuliano Kamberaj takes the stage win and the lead in the general classification! Still a great result for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins in second place, and it’s actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Marin who passes everyone else to finish third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Riabushenko comes in fourth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Colbrelli, then the fading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali just barely manage to stay ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Tivani, who ends up in 8th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/USPCC/S3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Scott snatch up the final bonus seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Cisse. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Walls, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Rojus all end up without anything tangible to show for today, bad news for all of their GC (and partly U25) ambitions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat loses the yellow jersey today, even falling behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi into third place. But while he trails the Strava rider by just a single second, his deficit to new leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj stands at 22 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat is such a good prologue rider that it’s feasible for him to take that back tomorrow, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj isn’t terrible on a time trialing bike either and he’s given himself a real shot at the overall victory today.
