USA Pro Cycling Challenge
--
Stage 1
The first of three consecutive road stages, this one is both the longest and the one with the most elevation (still not much of it, though). With only one classified mountain sprint each over the next two days, whoever wears the polkadots at the end of today could well take it all the way. Meanwhile, many sprinters fancy their chances to take an early lead in the GC with a win in Richmond.
A duo of Hamza and Stalberg tried for the better part of the first 30 kilometers to stay ahead of the peloton, but Babymetal, Stela-Vita and Gjensidige wouldn’t have it and we’re back to square one just a few kilometers ahead of the intermediate sprint.
No new breakaway means the sprinters fight for the first points and seconds of the race and after a nice leadout from Selig, it’s Boudat who prevails over Wippert and Liepins.
No attacks from anyone towards the first mountain points either, so Allegaert takes them kind of by chance ahead of Arashiro and Van Moer.
Liepins catches his rivals off guard with an early acceleration and easily wins the second intermediate sprint, but Boudat remains in the provisional lead by crossing the line second, ahead of Scott.
Odd stage, this. No breakaway allowed or even desired, apparently - Knotten, Merlier and Lunder take the points on the second mountain sprint.
Here’s what the teams have worked so hard to ensure, then: the sprint finish. With 6 kilometers to go, two other teams have taken over and are setting a very high pace: Hilcona Racing Team and Adidas-Eurocash. Their leaders, Krieger near the front and German Champion Reinhardt further behind, bookend a big group of the top sprinters fighting for position.
Morin is already in the lead with 2.5 kilometers to go, way too early to reasonably launch Krieger. In the German’s wheel are Kamberaj and Riabushenko.
1.7 kilometers to go and the Adidas train is coming up fast on the right hand side. Lo Cicero launches as the final leadout, while Marin, Major and Minali try to jump into the slipstream.
Inside the flamme rouge, Krieger and Reinhardt have taken the lead. Rojus, Scott and Marin make up the second row, then a whole bunch of riders close together.
Reinhardt goes backwards already, Krieger still holds on to the lead but for how long? This is still anyone’s stage.
Krieger collapses with 400m to go and Scott takes the lead ahead of Marin. Boudat on the right and Kamberaj over the middle are currently the fastest on the road, but not by all that much.
This is going to be so close! Scott is still in the lead, now Major makes a push for the win …
Scott is fading at the very last second and Boudat is ahead by a few centimeters, can he make it to the line?
Yes! By about half a bike length, Thomas Boudat wins stage 1 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. It’s heartbreak for Scott who is relegated to fourth by the slimmest of margins, it’s instead Kamberaj and Major who finish second and third.
Sanikwathi comes in fifth, then Rojus, Marin, Walls and Riabushenko. Tivani beats Liepins and Colbrelli in a very very close finish for 10th place and the final bonus second.
Today was not a great day for the leadout trains: Krieger finishes 15th, Reinhardt just 20th. Hopefully they’ll have better luck next time.
With the stage win and the bonus seconds from the sprints, Boudat already has 12 seconds on Kamberaj and 30 on every pure prologue specialist in the field, setting himself up very nicely for a big race. Scott leads the young riders classification, while Allegaert and Knotten share the lead in the mountain classification.
