Stage 21

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%200.jpg

We've had a sleep since the surreal scenes on the slopes yesterday, and it might as well have been a dream, or nightmare, depending on which side of the spectrum the riders fell on! While we don't expect anything close to that today, we are still hoping for an exciting stage to close out this race! The sprinters will be focus, and will be hoping to go out in a blaze of glory. Can the break or a late attack spoil their party today?

For the last time in this year's Giro, five riders get away early to form the break of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Krigbaum

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%201.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Arensman wins the only intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Fernandes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Krigbaum and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Januskevicius.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%202.jpg

With 50 km to go, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Lidl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Minions, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Vesuvio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar setting the pace in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%203.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Arensman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle are dropped with 15 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%204.jpg

They are caught 4 km later.

The three breakaway riders still hold a 36 second lead with 5 km to go! Can they hold on till the line?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%205.jpg

The answer is no as they are caught with just 2 km to go. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Alaphilippe for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Stewart and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Bettiol are leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi. Most sprinters are in and around the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke has a gap at the front with just 1 km to go in the Giro. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh is next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi didn't get a good leadout in the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%207.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke still holds the lead with 500 meters left but he's slowing! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Groves has moved up behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%208.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh levels up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke with 300 meters remaining. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen are next as the sprinters have all caught up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%209.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen goes into the lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh's challenge ends abruptly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Banaszek are finishing strongly. As also is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock. That would be a dream result for the young rider!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2011.jpg

Thijssen holds on for the win! That's a great result for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand is 2nd followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda, who bookends the Giro with good results on the first and last flat stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Banaszek holds on for 4th, ahead of fast finishing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel. Then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Larsen is 8th, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Santos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Steimle completes the Top 10, edging out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wouters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2016.jpg

Today's winner - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Gerben Thijssen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen ends a satisfactory Giro up until this point in the best way possible and makes it an excellent one for himself. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand continues his late race form, which will have further implications that we will come to later. Like already mentioned, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda ends the race like he started it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2017.jpg

The big story of the race happened yesterday and there's still no getting over the face that it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Shikai stepping onto the top step in possibly the greatest smash and grab in MG GT history. He also makes history as the first ever Asian Grand Tour winner! The others on the podium, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig, probably wish they didn't have to go up there today, as I'm sure they're still feeling the gut punch from this result after having dominated the race amongst themselves since the end of Week 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Pinot was another big winner yesterday as his breakaway exploits in the first two-thirds of the stage gets him the KOM jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Giannoutsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Shikai, once again, complete this podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2019.jpg

Talking about last minute jersey changes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand's win on Stage 17, and his runner-up placing today gives him the Points jersey after rarely being near the front all race! Previous leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol finishes 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Thijssen going up to 3rd with today's result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Fouche didn't let go of the U25 jersey once he got it. Behind him though, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Johannessen used the final week of mountains to scrap his way up to second, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Xero make it a 1-3 in this classification with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock finishing above much more fancied climbers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Giro/GDIS21%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg too, didn't let go of the Teams classification ever since they went top. There was quite a bit of shuffling behind them recently though, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png ISA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Xero sewing up the podium after yesterday's stage.
