We've had a sleep since the surreal scenes on the slopes yesterday, and it might as well have been a dream, or nightmare, depending on which side of the spectrum the riders fell on! While we don't expect anything close to that today, we are still hoping for an exciting stage to close out this race! The sprinters will be focus, and will be hoping to go out in a blaze of glory. Can the break or a late attack spoil their party today?
SP AC FL HI Ahlstrand82 81 73 66 Van der Lijke82 79 73 76 Enger81 78 73 69 Van Poppel81 78 72 64 Kemboi80 80 78 64 Groves80 79 75 72 Cullaigh80 81 74 67 Keough79 79 73 62 Banaszek79 81 74 65 Bol79 77 76 70 Thijssen79 81 75 63 Santos78 78 76 64 Steimle78 80 74 70
For the last time in this year's Giro, five riders get away early to form the break of the day:
Krigbaum
Arensman
Januskevicius
Fernandes
Van Baarle
Arensman wins the only intermediate sprint ahead of Van Baarle, Fernandes, Krigbaum and Januskevicius.
With 50 km to go, it's Lidl, Minions, Vesuvio and Polar setting the pace in the pack.
Arensman and Van Baarle are dropped with 15 km to go.
They are caught 4 km later.
The three breakaway riders still hold a 36 second lead with 5 km to go! Can they hold on till the line?
The answer is no as they are caught with just 2 km to go. It's Alaphilippe for Van der Lijke at the front. Stewart and Bettiol are leading out Kemboi. Most sprinters are in and around the front.
Van der Lijke has a gap at the front with just 1 km to go in the Giro. Cullaigh is next. Kemboi didn't get a good leadout in the end.
Van der Lijke still holds the lead with 500 meters left but he's slowing! Groves has moved up behind Cullaigh.
Cullaigh levels up with Van der Lijke with 300 meters remaining. Sureda and Thijssen are next as the sprinters have all caught up.
Thijssen goes into the lead as Van der Lijke and Cullaigh's challenge ends abruptly.
Ahlstrand and Banaszek are finishing strongly. As also is Pidcock. That would be a dream result for the young rider!
Thijssen holds on for the win! That's a great result for him.
Ahlstrand is 2nd followed by Sureda, who bookends the Giro with good results on the first and last flat stage.
Banaszek holds on for 4th, ahead of fast finishing Van Poppel. Then comes Bol and Pidcock.
Larsen is 8th, followed by Santos.
Steimle completes the Top 10, edging out Wouters.
Today's winner - Gerben Thijssen.
Thijssen ends a satisfactory Giro up until this point in the best way possible and makes it an excellent one for himself. Ahlstrand continues his late race form, which will have further implications that we will come to later. Like already mentioned, Sureda ends the race like he started it.
The big story of the race happened yesterday and there's still no getting over the face that it's Shikai stepping onto the top step in possibly the greatest smash and grab in MG GT history. He also makes history as the first ever Asian Grand Tour winner! The others on the podium, Dombrowski and Haig, probably wish they didn't have to go up there today, as I'm sure they're still feeling the gut punch from this result after having dominated the race amongst themselves since the end of Week 1.
Pinot was another big winner yesterday as his breakaway exploits in the first two-thirds of the stage gets him the KOM jersey. Giannoutsos and Shikai, once again, complete this podium.
Talking about last minute jersey changes, Ahlstrand's win on Stage 17, and his runner-up placing today gives him the Points jersey after rarely being near the front all race! Previous leader Bol finishes 2nd with Thijssen going up to 3rd with today's result.
Fouche didn't let go of the U25 jersey once he got it. Behind him though, Johannessen used the final week of mountains to scrap his way up to second, while Xero make it a 1-3 in this classification with Pidcock finishing above much more fancied climbers.
Carlsberg too, didn't let go of the Teams classification ever since they went top. There was quite a bit of shuffling behind them recently though, with ISA and Xero sewing up the podium after yesterday's stage.
