Tour de Pologne - Stage 6

Tour de Pologne
Stage 6
Zakopane - Morskie Oko
179.2km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/01.jpg

The race has it’s greatest summit finish yet in Morskie Oko today and the race favorites represent that. It’s possible that a breakaway could survive, but because GC is so close we expect the favorites to want the stage bonus seconds and the potential gaps. KOM should still be a breakaway priority.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/02.jpg

Less than a kilometer out of the start gate and the race is HOT. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi is the solo attacker with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bardet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Jang the first to start chasing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Trillini leads the group of three which includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Eriksson and potential race favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Hoehn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Lipowitz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Medvedev, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Piaskowy are behind but in front of the peloton which hasn’t started reacting strongly. The peloton finally brings everyone back but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi as the formation phase hasn’t ended.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi manages to survive to the top of the cat 3 climb but he’s clearly hurting. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Jang jumps away from the peloton again while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis makes his first attacks of the race. They earn the points. Further attacks by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne AND pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Lafay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen are let go to create the daily break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman isn’t quite too sure about that last statement and he wants to join the front who is 2:00 ahead. He brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Trillini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Bystrom off the front. Only 155km to go. Again, this does not cause a reaction behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/06.jpg

The front 7 came together and are separating again after a hard ascent of the next cat 3 climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis attacked for the first place points while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Jang followed. The rest of the breakaway is struggling. The front 7 do regroup though. They hold 2:00 on the pack 3 chasers who hold 2:00 on the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Arifin sits between the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman group and the peloton alone also trying to catch up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/07.jpg

The first sprint point only attracts 3 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen while the rest of the group holds tight on their pacing. Of course, they come back together quickly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman’s crew is down to 1:15 behind the front. The front 7 have 5:00 n the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Arifin is still chasing as he can see the breakaway come together up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/09.jpg

After 40km of formation the group is finally all together. They are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Trillini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Jang, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Bystrom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman - he sits best of the group at 0:21 back on GC
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Lafay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Arifin

[Missing Photo – KOM 3 – OOPS]

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis is enjoying these KOM sprints as the order is almost the same as the last. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne takes 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman outsprints Kang for 3rd. 5:15 over the peloton with 125km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/10.jpg

Time for the 4th KOM of the day! This one of the a photo finish given to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell is the one to miss out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/11.jpg

Our 5th Cat 3 climb of the day! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell avenges his last sprint to take the top points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Jang gets the remaining spot. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi is distanced by the group but will likely return in the downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/12.jpg

With 5 Cat 3 climbs done and 4 more to come the provisional standings look like this. The breakaway also has a chance at the Cat 2 before the finish although the finishing climb should go to the peloton - who currently sit 4:45 behind. 107km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi does not return to the group before this climb and is distanced for good. At the top of the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman earns the KOM points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Lafay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell. The gap to the peloton is 4:00 with 93km left. Los Pollos Hermanos are leading the peloton, who have dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Predatsch. It’ll be a long solo day for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi returns to the peloton with 80km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell is finding his timing and takes another KOM win, this time ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Lafay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen. There’s 62km to the finish now and 3:00 over the peloton. Assa Abloy has positioned pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gibbons on the front for the pacemaking. Some additional riders are falling off the back without much impact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/15.jpg

Another 3rd category climb and the same figures find themselves attacking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis is the winner at this occasion over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Duchesne finding 4th place again. There’s 46km left over the top and 2:30 over the peloton. The break will at least reach the final cat 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/16.jpg

The final Cat 3 climb is a short kicker. The top 3 from the last climb trade places as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell earns the victory this time over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman keeps his hold on 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis is the most interesting the sprint point while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell comes 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman takes 3rd which also comes with 2 bonus seconds. With a gap extending to 3:00 the peloton should be worried about the margin given to the front 8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Trillini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Arifin have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen is also dropped with 21km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/18.jpg

Having just crossed under the 20km to go banner, the peloton has 2:10 to catch the breakaway with 11km of the race still heading uphill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Tesfatsion is the new pacesetter in support of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes while many of the GC competitors sit near the front of a 49 man group. No one in the top 20 has been gapped

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/19.jpg

Just as the breakaway approached the final 300m of the category 2 climb, the peloton flies through them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Schlegel leads the group over ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier. The peloton is 36 strong with 15.5km to go. The only members of the pre-stage Top 20 not here are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Osorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Denz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/20.jpg

ATTACK! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran sees the tiny flat section at the top of the climb as an opportunity to gain some distance. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Schlegel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier right on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes is trying to bridge while the rest of the peloton chases. 14km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya has to bring them back himself which he does right at the bottom of the climb with 9km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Meurisse takes a disappointing puncture 8.0km to go. He drops a minute to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis decides to wait with hopes to bring back the points leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Schelling wants an opportunity at glory after losing the youth jersey lead yesterday with 6.8km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro is leading the pack to pull him back. Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Meurisse does manage to return to the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Schelling still holds a 0:20 gap ahead of the peloton of 30 with just under 5km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard is fulling at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Schelling is immediately brought back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard seems to struggle for his attempts to do just that. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita is the next to attack and takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann with him. There’s 4.0km and they have 0:12. It’s unclear who wants to take up the pace

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Barta tries to pace for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Sicard, but he just sets up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya to join the front two with 3.5km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya decides that a group of 4 is too many and goes solo with 2.5km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates have brought everyone else back from that group and they’re 17 strong trying to catch the Rwandan. Those distanced include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Hirschi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Rohendi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Cras. The 3 DK Zalgiris leaders are all barely holding on at the back with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Meurisse

1.5km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran is dropped with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Cras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Lasinis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon is next off the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya looks dead as he pushes through the 1km to go banner. He has 0:21 over the rest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes is leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier. They have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson in their wheels. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Schlegel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Benoot are the others looking okay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/28.jpg

300m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is already celebrating! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes is still sprinting to close the gap as much as possible with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates. The others are surviving to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya wins his 2nd stage of Tour de Pologne! Will it be enough for the GC lead?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes takes a convincing second with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates right with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Yates is the clear 3rd place finisher.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson are next but they’ve been gapped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada are 7th and 8th, also on gaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Buchmann is 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Benoot 10th where they’ll be surely disappointed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Sicard finishes 13th one of the bigger losers of the pre-stage top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Lasinis comes 17th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vanhoucke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard are the worst of that group outside the top 25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/34.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya takes the stage win! 23 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/35.jpg

Those 23 seconds were enough for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya to also find himself in yellow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/36.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi holds onto the KOM after some hard fought battles

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/Pologne/S6/37.jpg

The stage win also gives pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Areruya enough points to lead the Points Classification!
