The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Profiles/c1_berlin.jpg

The organizer’s favourites consist of a variety of sprinters with different combinations of flat and sprint skills plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Rickaert as a more Rouleur type. It stands out that the purer sprinters with less convincing rouleur skills (especially the veterans pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt) are missing in this list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0001.jpg

The riders are on the road and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Van Den Bossche is the first one to attack right after the start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0002.jpg

The young Belgian is quickly followed and joined by eight other attackers. The peloton makes no effort to shut this move down, so the break has a lead of nearly 3 minutes after just 10 km raced. The nine escapees are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Fjellheim and Loland
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Gomez and Ruiz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Blanca Pareja

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0003.jpg

20 km later the gap has settled in at about 5’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0004.jpg

With 100 km to go the gap is down to 3’20. Among others pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Vogt are among those who do most of the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0005.jpg

46 km to go and the break still has a lead of 1’30. Back in the pack the pace has been upend and we see the first sprinters near the front, probably to don’t be on the wrong side of a potential split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0006.jpg

With 30 km to go the riders in the break start to attack each other with still a one minute gap to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0007.jpg

The peloton is chasing hard and is stretched out especially at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0008.jpg

The break is brought back with 19 km to go, but the pace in the peloton stays up and there have already been some short-lived splits.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0009.jpg

4 km to the line and it seems like the smaller (and fruitless) attacks were all shut down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Richardson. There is only one sprint train though as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png JEWA is lined up with Selig, Boudat and Degenkolb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0010.jpg

2 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat is already in front, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj and a bunch consisting of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Riabushenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Marin,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0011.jpg

With 1.2 km to go the 9 riders named before (plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser) have a gap to the rest of the pack as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik wasn’t able to keep contact. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat is still in front but already fading, so it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolbs turn to win this one for his team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0012.jpg

But the veteran looks spend soon afterwards! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Riabushenko is now in the lead, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser on the left seems quick too!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Riabushenko

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0013.jpg

Those two are still looking strongest. It will also be crucial how the interestingly positioned finish line will influence the result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moserpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Riabushenko
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilssonpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0014.jpg

And it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Riabushenko who takes the win! Behind him it’s close between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins with the latter having the better end to him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Moser comes in 4th followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Marin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Minali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat complete the Top 10 just before they get reeled in by the rest of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Berlin/PCM0016.jpg

Congratulations on a much needed win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Babymetal Cycling!
