Dombrowski took the win yesterday as the GC men made the first moves in their battle for the Giro crown. He also leads the GC, but only on countback over Haig. Bennett lies 3rd after finishing in the same spot yesterday.
Today is the first big mountain stage of the race and we will finish on top of Blockhaus, so it's clear the organizers did not believe in warm-ups when coming up with this year's route! Can the American stamp his authority further on this race, or will someone else claim the Mountain today?
Colour me unamused, 35 riders have joined the break today!
Foliforov
Gabburo, Conti, Johannessen
Tesfaye Heyi
Januskevicius
Rubio, Vosekalns
Buitrago, Bouchard
Christakos, Carpenter
Fortunato, Zwiehoff
Osorio
L. Wirtgen
Vila
Chamorro
Dujardin, Holmes, Zukowsky
Stancu, Huertas, Donovan
Schmid, Tediashvili
Khodayari, Kaczmarek, Yudha
Vine, Gee
Martin, Hellemose
De La Cruz Chapulin
Bazhkou
20 of the 24 teams are represented in the break!
Foliforov wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of Januskevicius, Schmid, Tesfaye Heyi and Tediashvili.
Wirtgen wins the first KOM ahead of Jasnuskevicius and Schmid.
7 km from KOM 2, Gee, Tediashvili, Huertas and Zukowsky are dropped.
Then it's Hellemose, Bazhkou, Gabburo, De La Cruz Chapulin, Holmes, Kaczmarek and Dujardin who are dropped.
Fortunato, Rubio, Donovan, Vine, Vila, Januskevicius, Christakos, Tesfaye Heyi and Yudha are dropped 3 km from the summit.
1 km from the KOM, Schmid, Khodayari, Martin, Chamorro, Johannessen and Carpenter are dropped.
Vosekalns wins the second KOM ahead of Stancu, Bouchard, Zwiehoff, and Johannessen. Carpenter and Chamorro pick up points from the next group..
The Schmid group minus Martin catch the leaders on the descent.
Schmid wins the second intermediate sprint. He is followed by Johannessen, Chamorro, Stancu and Khodayari.
The 74 rider peloton has already started catching dropped breakaway riders. They currently trail by 5'28".
Schmid and Chamorro are dropped again with 13 km to go. We're on the climb to the finish.
Zwiehoff attacks from the lead group with 11 km to go.
He is caught 2 km later.
Johannessen, Khodayari and Carpenter are dropped.
Dombrowski, Godoy and Hirt have attacked from the pack. Wirtgen is hanging on with them despite being in the break for so long. The next group has Bennett, Amezawa and seven riders from the break. The rest are already in the pack or dropped further.
Stancu is gapped with 7 km to go.
The Dombrowski group catches the Johannessen group. They are 1 minute ahead of the pack and 90 seconds behind the remaining break.
Bouchard makes his final move for the win. The others have been caught by the Dombrowksi group. 4 km to go. Wirtgen's brave rider is over as he's now back in the pack.
Mavrikakis, Fouche and Habtemichael have been dropped from the pack.
Dombrowski and Godoy catch Bouchard with 3.5 km left. There will be no fairytale win for the latter today.
Dombrowski powers away half a kilometer later. The others have been caught by the lead group, which is very stretched out now! Bennett, Amezawa and Stussi are towards the end of the group.
Haig is trying to chase down Dombrowksi. The group has splintered completely behind them. Galta and Carthy make up E3 with Godoy, Shikai, Bouchard and Hirt in E4. 2 km to go.
Dombrowski's lead is 23 seconds as he enters the last kilometer.
500 meters to go now and Haig is not being able to make up the gap.
Dombrowski wins back to back stages!
Haig takes 2nd.
Galta is 3rd.
Carthy is 4th.
Shikai takes the sprint for 5th, ahead of Godoy, Bouchard and Hirt.
Zwiehoff takes 9th ahead of Vosekalns. Rodrigues is 11th.
Stussi, Stancu, Bennett and Pinot complete the Top 15 with Amezawa just after that.
Today's winner - Joseph Dombrowski.
Dombrowski goes into the outright lead of the race, 34 seconds ahead of Haig. Tomorrow's stage is the time trial which would favour the latter though. Galta moves up to 3rd as Bennett falls down the rankings after a disappointing result today. Bol continues to lead the Points from Enger. Dombrowski ties with Oldani and Dujardin at the top of the KOM. Schmid is the new leader of the U25s with Carlsberg now leading the Teams standings.
