Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/mg_faso_02.jpg

Stage 2 is the only sane (i.e. kind of normal) stage of the race, it’s flat and should favour the sprinters who are able to survive the short bump. And indeed the list of favourites consists of the best sprinters of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0022.jpg

The riders are on the road and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni attacks right from the start. He was also part of the breakaway yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0023.jpg

There were some counterattacks but the peloton made sure no more than 4 riders get away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Granados and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro have already reached pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni while the Finish champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo is still chasing them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni wins the first intermediate sprint followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Granados. The Italian is the only one who already had some points and is now on 10 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo came within about 15 seconds of the first group but never made contact, he’s now right in between the front and the peloton, it’s 1’10 in each direction.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0025.jpg

The second intermediate sprint sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Granados (now 8) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro (8) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni (12). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo is reeled in by the pack shortly afterwards, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Bewley has a defect, but he’s quickly back in the field.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0026.jpg

The break had a maximum gap of about 3 minutes, but mainly JEWA (for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb) and Air New Zealand (for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff) are chasing and the gap is down to 2’30 with about 50 km to go. None of the escapees is a danger for the GC anyway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0027.jpg

The last intermediate sprint sees the same result as the second one: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Granados (now 14) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro (12) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni (14). Their lead is down to 1’30 with 30 km to go. Back in the pack Stela Vita is now also contributing for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0028.jpg

With 10 km to go the break is over, so there should be enough time for proper sprint preparations.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0029.jpg

With about 5 km to gopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Air New Zealand is still in front with the entire team lined up. Only some pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png JEWA riders in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0030.jpg

With 2 km to go we’re on the short bump (about 2-3 %). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff still has two leadouts in front of him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj has a teammate in front too. The other sprinters are in a bunch behind them. This looks promising for Air New Zealand as the last 900 m are slightly downhill, so a long sprint could be successful.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0031.jpg

Under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff has launched and there is already a small gap after the first 12 riders, with especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik left behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff faded immediately and is now well behind with 500 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bauhaus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png McLay are pretty much even at the front now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png McLaypcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilssonpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bauhaus

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0033.jpg

With 200 m to go the three former leaders are all done. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb is now in the lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini very close. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Itami and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major are right behind those two and are still in the mix.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0034.jpg

It’s just some meters left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini is fading and about to get third because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Itami doesn’t have the speed to still get him. But more importantly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major has passed the Italian and is gaining on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb. This could be a photo finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0035.jpg

It is close indeed!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0036.jpg

And it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb’s race! The veteran resists the Barbadian Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Major. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Guardini stays 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Itami is 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bauhaus edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png McLay for 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Bertilsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.pngWillwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Lo Cicero are the other riders in the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Liepins takes 11th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Zariff finishes in a disappointing 12th place given the workload of his team today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Havik is the last rider of this group, though there are no gaps awarded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Faso/PCM0038.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb also takes over the GC lead, though he won’t stand a chance tomorrow. Former leader and teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Taubel is on the same time. The two also share the points lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo is still best U25 rider. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Strava and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Stela Vita are the best teams.
