Stage 2
Stage 2 is the only sane (i.e. kind of normal) stage of the race, it’s flat and should favour the sprinters who are able to survive the short bump. And indeed the list of favourites consists of the best sprinters of the race.
The riders are on the road and Balloni attacks right from the start. He was also part of the breakaway yesterday.
There were some counterattacks but the peloton made sure no more than 4 riders get away. Granados and Guerreiro have already reached Balloni while the Finish champion Kaislavuo is still chasing them.
Balloni wins the first intermediate sprint followed by Guerreiro and Granados. The Italian is the only one who already had some points and is now on 10 points. Kaislavuo came within about 15 seconds of the first group but never made contact, he’s now right in between the front and the peloton, it’s 1’10 in each direction.
The second intermediate sprint sees Granados (now 8) in front of Guerreiro (8) and Balloni (12). Kaislavuo is reeled in by the pack shortly afterwards, while Bewley has a defect, but he’s quickly back in the field.
The break had a maximum gap of about 3 minutes, but mainly JEWA (for Degenkolb) and Air New Zealand (for Zariff) are chasing and the gap is down to 2’30 with about 50 km to go. None of the escapees is a danger for the GC anyway.
The last intermediate sprint sees the same result as the second one: Granados (now 14) in front of Guerreiro (12) and Balloni (14). Their lead is down to 1’30 with 30 km to go. Back in the pack Stela Vita is now also contributing for Kamberaj.
With 10 km to go the break is over, so there should be enough time for proper sprint preparations.
With about 5 km to go Air New Zealand is still in front with the entire team lined up. Only some JEWA riders in between.
With 2 km to go we’re on the short bump (about 2-3 %). Zariff still has two leadouts in front of him, Kamberaj has a teammate in front too. The other sprinters are in a bunch behind them. This looks promising for Air New Zealand as the last 900 m are slightly downhill, so a long sprint could be successful.
Under the red kite Zariff has launched and there is already a small gap after the first 12 riders, with especially Willwohl and Havik left behind.
Zariff faded immediately and is now well behind with 500 m to go. Bauhaus, Bertilsson and McLay are pretty much even at the front now.
McLay Bertilsson Bauhaus Degenkolb Itami Guardini Major Lo Cicero Kamberaj Zariff Liepins
With 200 m to go the three former leaders are all done. Degenkolb is now in the lead with Guardini very close. But Itami and Major are right behind those two and are still in the mix.
It’s just some meters left and Guardini is fading and about to get third because Itami doesn’t have the speed to still get him. But more importantly Major has passed the Italian and is gaining on Degenkolb. This could be a photo finish!
It is close indeed!
And it’s Degenkolb’s race! The veteran resists the Barbadian Champion Major. Behind him Guardini stays 3rd, Itami is 4th.
Bauhaus edges out McLay for 5th. Bertilsson, Willwohl, Kamberaj and Lo Cicero are the other riders in the Top 10. Liepins takes 11th, while Zariff finishes in a disappointing 12th place given the workload of his team today. Havik is the last rider of this group, though there are no gaps awarded.
Degenkolb also takes over the GC lead, though he won’t stand a chance tomorrow. Former leader and teammate Taubel is on the same time. The two also share the points lead. Murillo is still best U25 rider. Podium Ambition, Strava and Stela Vita are the best teams.
