Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha
Stage 2
Praha - Karlovy Vary
177.4km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/01.jpg

The 177.4km route should be a race for the sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard enters with the best shot of dethroning pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Ganna as the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/02.jpg

A number of different breakaway attempts have been made in the first 20km, but the peloton refuses to allow the groups to get away. Team Puma - SAP, ELCO-ABEA and Minions are those controlling the peloton to make sure the break doesn’t form.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/03.jpg

The first sprint point is 1.5km away and there is still no formed breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg (13” back) has a gap of 11 seconds over a quickly closing peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg will surely not hold on as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard sprints up the middle of the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Barbier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand are both attacking for Minions while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Santos appears to be sprinting for ISA - Hexacta with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan out of position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard pushes to the line and takes the 6 bonus seconds. This puts him in the provisional lead after starting only 4 seconds back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand takes 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan does sneak away for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran is the first to attack between the sprint points and the effort to chase seems to have diminished. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin appear to join without issue.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/07.jpg

With 135km to go, the 4 riders have joined together and will be our day’s breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran is best placed starting 17 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Ganna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran are the first three to cross the line at the 2nd sprint point and the breakaway has gained a 5’00” advantage over the peloton. Behind, Team Puma - SAP, ELCO-ABEA, and ISA - HEXACTA are relaying easily. As the peloton approaches 100km to go, the gap has decreased to 3’30”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/10.jpg

The breakaway has lost some advantage heading into the final sprint point of the day as the gap now sits at 3’00” as the Minions have joined the measured chase behind. It’s a downhill sprint, but no one jumps before 1km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Dujardin takes the win this time with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran in 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen takes the 3rd slot with a late push meaning all members of the breakaway come away with some reward for the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/11.jpg

With 30km to go, Team Puma-SAP has worked tremendously to bring this back. The quartet up front have only 24” and it’s surprising they’re even fighting to stay away with this far left to go. No one is really helping Team Puma -SAP and the catch is made with 28km to go. The final 10km have some minor undulations so it will be interesting if anyone pushes the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/12.jpg

Heading over the only major uphill section with 20km to go, there is a split in the field with 26 riders left behind. No sprinters missed the selection but a number of TT hopefuls did: Tanfield, Hepburn, Zakarin, Hayter, Viennet, Thomas, Leung, Kurkle, Hofer, Krul, Dal Col, Cosnefroy, Christodoulos, Nareklishvili, Kamna, Munton, Sterobo, Campanaerts, Conci, and Atkins are all amongst those left behind. 15km left and they’re still gapped.

Having just passed under the 10km banner, the sprint trains are lining up. ELCO-ABEA and ISA-HEXACTA are the two major trains assembling at the front. Solo riders are trying to grab their wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough well positioned as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/13.jpg

It’s still ISA - HEXACTA controlling the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan sitting 3rd wheel. The ELCO-ABEA train is right behind them and set up well to support pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is best of the rest as he sits on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/14.jpg

There’s a small uphill drag heading into the final 2km and Minions have used it to establish their own train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand. They’re starting to interlock with ISA - HEXACTA so we shall see if both can keep their positioning. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough are now on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard’s wheel with no major contenders fighting to hold pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/15.jpg

ELCO-ABEA pinches the others against the barrier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand are now last of the main pack sprinting. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Bouglas is the final leadout man with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Baska now interrupting the ELCO-ABEA train as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard is still out in front of the rest but there’s a row of 6 sprinters right behind: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Peak, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Carsi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/16.jpg

Under the 1km banner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter takes a huge jump on the open side of the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov tries to follow while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel shows himself trying to follow as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough is still following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard who hasn’t jumped yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/17.jpg

With just 400m to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter still has a bike length on the field. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is slowing a tad with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel the only two who can challenger for the win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh are best of the rest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/18.jpg

PCMDAILY.COM/IMAGES/MG/2023/MICROS/RAB.PNG VAN POPPEL punishes the field in the last 400m and takes the victory for Rabobank. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard finishes 2nd for great additional bonus seconds and will surely take the leader’s jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is given the photo finish for 3rd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough is the clear 5th place with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Rajovic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Carsi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh finishing out the top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand could never find a way around the sprinting pack and end up 18th and 19th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/20.jpg

The strong group of TTers behind could never catch up and are watching the peloton finish away from them. A very tough day for many of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel takes a fantastic stage victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Praha/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard slots into the GC lead with bonus seconds at the first intermediate and the finish. He also now leads the points competition.
