Vuelta a Pais Vasco
Strangely the Pais Vasco peloton insisted on a day off to celebrate the American thanksgiving holiday but now they are back.
The final stage of the Vuelta a Pais Vasco is 148k from Eibar to Bera-Ibardin, not as much climbing as yesterday with 3 Cat 2s and one Cat 1, but the finish also gets a Cat 1 rating. That final climb is 4.6k at 6.8% but it maxes at 22% and those steep gradients are in the final kilometer.
With the top 3 on GC split by only 11 seconds it seems likely that the overall race winner will be decided in that final kilometer. Of the three, the organizers think race leader Oomen is the favorite but both his rivals Masnada (s.t.) and Dunbar (+0’11) are on the list as well. Oomen has a bad omen in that the leader at the start of the day has yet to hold on to the jersey in this race.
6k gone. The first three attackers have opened up a 53 second lead. Barbero missed the break yesterday but thanks to a fortunate distribution of points held on to the jersey. He isn’t risking it today, he is joined by Kulppi and Polanco who were breakaway-mates on stage 2. Other teams who would want to be in the break had trouble get riders to the front so now SEE Turtles, Saeco and Team Würth are all chasing.
20k gone and the break are on the first climb which is the Cat 3 Alto de Itziar (5.2k at 4.1%). Saeco and SEE Turtles have limited their gap to 43 seconds, an attack on the climb seems likely.
We get not just one attack but many. The first two are Zordan and Reguigui and they have reached the original trio. 32 seconds behind are frequent flyer, Vendrame, plus Honore and De la Cruz. Twenty seconds behind them it is Blanca Pareja and Jacobsen. And a little further back are Sleen and Cruz.
Barbero takes maximum points at the top and is now 8 points up on Pacher, who isn’t in the break at the moment. The peleton is at 2’12. Gamper is leading the peloton for Lierse and he isn’t chasing hard so they appear to be happy with the number of riders out front.
100k to go, the first 11 attackers have come together. Cruz got to within 30 seconds but is now back to 1’37 so it doesn’t look like SEE Turtles will get a second rider. The break’s lead is 2’31 with Gamper doing the work to keep the gap under control. Lierse don’t need to worry about the break too much as the closest to the GC is Honore at 6’14. The biggest threat to Barbero’s KOM lead are Kulppi and Vendrame, who are both on 26, 10 points down on Barbero (after including the first climb).
67k to go and the break is starting the first Cat 2. The Alto de Iritxulegi (6.1k at 5.8%). It marks the start of the more serious climbing in the stage. It is quickly followed by another Cat 2, the Alto de Agina (4.1k at 6.8%). Then about 15k of descending and flat before the first ascent of the Alto de Ibardin. The first time round the riders get to skip the steep section. When they summit that they will have 27k before the second ascent begins. That 27k includes a few uncategorized climbs and 2 sprint points. Right now, the break lead by 3’14, down from a peak of 4’20. Lierse getting help from Popo4Ever, Team Würth and Genii.
600 meters to climb. Reguigui has a gap. Both Saeco and Tafjord have sacrificed their places in the break to protect their relatively weak KOM competitors who have been dropped.
Barbero comes back at the top to take maximum points ahead of Honore. His KOM jersey is looking increasingly safe as neither of his main rivals will score.
At the top of the next climb, the Alto de Agina, Barbero doesn’t time it quite as well and settles for 3rd behind Jacobsen and Honore. Honore’s points move him into 2nd in the KOM competition. The other two still in the front group are Reguigui and Sleen. The remaining 6 from the original breakaway are 52 seconds behind. The peloton at 2’56 with Jarc on the front.
The virtual KOM standings:
44k to go for the peloton. Jarc still doing all the work. The leaders are at 3’01 with the second group 59 seconds behind them.
3.6k to go on the first ascent of the Alto de Ibardin for the leaders. They still have 52 seconds on the 6 chasers but the peloton has closed to 2’32. The peloton down to 121 riders. Team Würth contributing to the chase again, not clear their motivation, maybe bitter none of their riders made it into the break.
At the top Barbero takes maximum points. Nobody can catch him now so he will be KOM winner, he made the most of both his days in the break. When they repeat this climb as the finish, they will take the daunting road to the left. For now, they go straight on. Peleton at 2’12.
20k to go for the peloton, leading the chase are Prevar, Nikiema, and Robov. The 5 leaders are 1’42 ahead, the riders in the 2nd group are gradually being caught. 3k to the first of the late sprint points so it looks like the break will take that.
10k for the leaders, Sleen has been dropped but remaining 4 (Reguigui, Honore, Barbero and Jacobsen) have 1’39. They have completed the final uncategorized climb so the only obstacle left is the climb to the finish. Peloton is down to 92 riders, nobody interesting has been dropped. Looks like the break will stay away to the finishing climb, so the second sprint point won’t come into play either.
5k banner for the peloton. Novak on the front. The leaders are still 1’24 ahead, and can just be seen as they start the finishing climb. The group in between includes Sleen, Kulppi and Vendrame.
3.2k to go as Honore attacks the break.
2.6k to go for the peloton and Beltran attacks. He is 2’54 down on GC so it is about the stage win for him. Honore is 54 seconds ahead of the peloton and 23 seconds ahead of the next 3. Masnada is the 3rd JURA rider pictured, a bit further back than ideal, Dunbar is near him while the race leader is behind his domestiques up front.
1.7k in the stage for Honore (ignore the 1k banner it refers to the first ascent). He has 21 seconds over Reguigui and Barbero, 35 seconds over Sleen and 47 seconds over the peloton. Buchmann tried to join Beltran’s attack but Lierse shut them down.
700 meters for Honore but he is about to hit the hard part. The peloton is 39 seconds behind and down to 36 riders. The first top 20 GC riders have been dropped in Uwizeyimana (13th), Lienhard (17h), and Barbio (19th). Masnada and Dunbar are both still about 20 riders back as Novak playing super-domestique for Oomen.
Pidcock joins Novak on the front as they turn for home. Honore still has 32 seconds, but last year Guldhammer tore up the last 500 meters, so he is certainly not safe. Dunbar has moved to just behind Oomen, Masnada two rows back from him.
Agony for Honore, the top can’t come fast enough. He still has 200 meters. Oomen has moved up as Novak finishes his work. Still 30 riders in this group including all the top 20 not mentioned.
Honore won’t win today. Oomen, Beltran and Pidcock nearest to him. Oomen looking good to win the GC as Dunbar amd Masnada look too far back to can get a gap or bonus seconds on him.
Oomen wins his second Vuelta a Pais Vasco and does it in style with a stage win. Beltran edges Pidcock for 2nd.
Buchmann takes 4th and Vasyliv snatch 5th from Honore who at least gets stage points for 6th. Fouche is 7th by inches.
Calmejane 8th, Dunbar 9th and Darbellay 10th.
Masnada settles for 12th behind Hadi who gets 11th.
Small time gaps are awarded before and after Buchmann in 4th and before Calmejane in 8th but the top 14 all finish within 18 seconds of each other and so the top 3 on GC don’t change. It is Oomen, Masnada, Dunbar.
With the bnous seconds Pidcock does pass Buchmann to take 4th on GC. Pidcock is also the best young rider ahead of his teammate Fouche.
Calmejane does enough to hold off Oomen for the points jersey. A nice race for the Trans rider.
Lierse is the deserved winner of the team’s competition ahead of JURA.
