Vuelta a Pais Vasco
Stage 5 marks the beginning of the more serious climbing at the Vuelta a Pais Vasco. 3 Cat 2s and 2 Cat 1’s with the stage ending just after the last summit. Two sprint points also on offer all in just 151k
Lierse dominates the top of the favorites list, Oomen will hope to leapfrog all the JURA riders ahead of him in the GC and also divest Izagirre from the leader’s jersey. Masnada, also on the favorites list, might be the biggest obstacle to that.
About 12k gone, no big gaps so far as the peloton is still chasing. Vendrame is on the front on his own. 12 seconds behind him is Magnussen. Then another 12 seconds to a group of 5 with Nyoni, Della Lunga, Tulett, Schlechter, and Skjerping. The peloton 28 seconds behind them with KOM leader Barbero leading the chase.
25k gone, the front 7 have come together and lead by 1’30. Caja Rural, Ekoi and Bordeaux all still trying to get a rider up the road.
107k to go, the break has swelled as the mentioned team and a few others get riders across. Their lead is 3’05 so this looks like the break of the day. The additional members of the break are Pacher, Lammertink, Quevedo, Honore, Zambanini. Among all the breakaway riders Honore is best in the GC at 1’59 down. Only Vendrame has KOM points before today, he is currently second.
2k to the top of the first climb, the Cat 2 Alto de Asentizio. Break’s lead is down to 2’02 as lots of teams are contributing to the chase.
Pacher leads most of the way up but Quevedo comes around him to take maximum points at the top. A number of riders dropped, we will see if they can rejoin.
The complete order is Quevedo (10), Pacher (8), Honore (6), Skjerping (4) and Lammertink (2). No points for Vendrame. The peloton crosses the top 2’48 down with Sajnok on the front. Predatsch the only rider dropped so far.
Quevedo gets the jump on the rest of the break and takes the first sprint point. Peleton at 2’25. Only Nyoni hasn’t been able to regain the front of the race. The peloton had brief splits over the top but Predatsch is the only rider behind the race now. 73k to go.
68k to go for the peloton. Nyoni is at 1’21 the rest of the break are at 2’18. The break is on the 2nd climb of the day the Cat 2 Alto de Karabeita (6.1k at 7%). Working on the front are: Sajnok, Kittel, Schomber, Cole, Jarc, and Vermeersch
This time Pacher gets it right and takes maximum points. Only Honore, Skjerping and Lammertink stay with him. Peloton closed to 1’41 under pressure from Sajnok but once he cracked they faded back and are now at 2’38. Nyoni has been caught.
2nd sprint point goes to Honore. The two Saeco riders rejoined the front four and the other 5 are just 28 seconds back. Peloton going hard now and is 1’57 down with a major split seeing 54 riders off the back.
The other 5 were never able to bridge back to the front of the race and with 38k to go they are caught by the peloton. Left out front are: Pacher, Honore, Vendrame Zambanini, Skjerping, and Lammertink. They lead by 1’48. Leading the peloton are Houle, Prevar, Robov. White and Vermeersch.
Soon the riders will be on the Cat 1 Alto de Izua (4.6k at 8.1%) It doesn’t look like the riders split off the back of the peloton will be able to rejoin. Dropped riders from the top GC 20 include Sajnok (11th on GC), Siddikov (13th), Van Niekerk (15th) and Vangstad (19th). Vangstad probably the only surprising name in that group. No major names caught out.
3k to climb on the Cat 1 for the break, Vendrame dropped the peloton only 1’32 behind.
And then there were 3. 1k to climb just Zambanini, Skjerping and Pacher left up front. In the peloton Robov has been drilling it on the front as Penasa is well down on GC and probably wants to make the race hard. He is sitting in 3rd wheel now.
Zambanini and Skjerping are the only ones left at the front as they reach the top of the climb. Peloton at 31 seconds with Pacher in between. Peloton has swelled to 121 riders as some riders try to bridge back from the second group. But it will likely split again over the top.
With the points splitting Barbero is still in the KOM jersey but Pacher took third on this climb to move within 2 points of the leader.
Just under 30k to go, still a Cat 2 and a Cat 1 climb to come. Forcing form Genii has split off a 54-rider lead group over the top of the climb. Rekita (3rd on GC), Politt (9th), Schäppi (14th) and Gamper (16th) have been added to the list of top 20 GC riders dropped. Rekita the only one of the JURA GC horde dropped so far although Brunel and Bissegger are right at he back of the group.
5k to go in the next climb, the Cat 2 Alto de Aiastia (6k at 4.1%) and the break is caught. Bagioli is leading now. 24k left.
Velasco leads them over the top, no one contests the KOM points. Potocki (20th on GC) has been dropped. From here about 10k of downhill and flat before the final climb.
Velasco leads them on to the final climb. The Cat 1 Alto de Arrate is 6.1k at 7.2%. 48 riders in the front group including 4 of the 5 JURA riders who started the day in the top 6 in GC.
3.2k to climb, 4.8k to race and Beltran attacks, Novak goes with him. Those two are both well down on GC. Brunel (4th on GC) has been dropped.
Fouche and Pidcock close down the attack but the action reduces the front group to 29 with Garby, Bissegger (5th), and O'Connor all dropped.
Oomen has a dig, he can’t get a gap but it does knock 7 more rider out of the front group including Kung (6th) and Barbio (12th). Ahead the Yellow Jersey is almost dropped but he only has 1.5k to climb, so maybe he can hang on.
Past the 1k to climb banners Vasyliv drives the pace. Izagirre (1st) is dropped along with Darbellay (10th). The roadside fans will be doing a double take when the realize that the Ekoi-Le Creuset rider still in the group is in fact #166, Russo. Lienhard is another surprising name to be in the last 20 survivors.
Vasyliv and Oomen lead them over the KOM point. 1.6k to ride. 17 riders in the group.
While there are fast riders like Russo and Pidcock in the group it is the climbers who have the energy left to open the sprint. Buchmann on the front followed by Novak, Penasa and Oomen.
500 meters for Buchmann. Masnada coming fast on the right, if he finishes ahead of Oomen he is guaranteed to take the race lead. Pidcock got started late but is coming on the left, he is showing off another side of his talents today.
200 meters for Buchmann he should win the stage. Russo, Lienhard and Canty have been gapped leaving 12 riders in the front group.
Buchmann wins with time to celebrate.
Novak 2nd, he won this stage last year so a step down for him. Oomen holds off Masnada to take the last bonus seconds. That is worth 8 seconds and he started the day . . . 8 seconds behind Masnada. Penasa and Calmejane are the next two.
Pidcock settles for 7th ahead of Eiking, Beltran, and Dunbar.
Oomen is awarded the leader’s jersey on countback. Dunbar the other rider who is still in the fight for the GC win tomorrow, he is 11 seconds down. Interestingly there are two sprint points in the last 20k tomorrow. Buchmann 4th (+0’45) and Pidcock 5th (+0’54).
Calmejane still leads in the points by 11 over Buchmann. Barbero does hold on to the KOM jersey as the points are split widely today. Pacher closest 2 points behind.
Pidcock takes over the young rider’s jersey 41 seconds ahead of his teammate Fouche. Lierse retakes the teams jersey by 59 seconds over JURA, who see their GC stranglehold broken. Although they still have 4 in the top 20.
