Vuelta a Pais Vasco
Stage 3 of the Vuelta a Pais Vasco sees the riders leave Bilbao for Vitoria Gasteiz. The route covers 176k and the mountain jersey will definitely be in play today as the course includes a Cat 1 and 5 Cat 3s. There are also two sprint points.
The puncheurs dominate the stage favorites today although this was the stage that was won by Dusan Kalaba last year, so the Xero duo of Houle and Pidcock seem like strong contenders.
KOM leader Kulppi is the first attacker and he is quickly joined by Osborne and these two get a gap of 1’15. Behind there is a big fight to join them, right now 5 riders have a 23-second advantage on the peloton. They are: Selimovic, Polanco, Cruz, Johnson, and Norsgaard. About 10k gone in the stage so far.
The five attackers mentioned are brought back. Instead Vendrame and Barbero escape and are able to bridge up to the two leaders. With 25k gone the four of them have a 2’28 advantage, the advantage can’t get too big as Barbero is just 1’04 down on GC. Only Kulppi has KOM points.
130k to go now. JURA doing all the work with Rekita and Bissegger. They are keeping the leaders in check; the gap it is still 2’28. The leaders are on the Cat 1 climb, the Aldo de Orduña, 7.4k at 8.2%.
By the top Kulppi and Osborne are dropped and Vendrame edges Barbero for maximum points. The 16 points matches Kulppi’s total from yesterday although the Finn will regain the lead as long as he scores on this climb.
Polanco and Balloni attack out of the peloton to take 5th and 6th. Bissegger leads all the way up the climb and has the peloton 3’13 down on the leaders.
Kulppi takes 4th on the climb good for 8 points so he leads Vendrame 24-16 with Polanco 3rd on 14 points.
Just under 100k to go for the leaders. Osborne and Kulppi still haven’t quite rejoined the front two as they start the first Cat 3, the Aldo de Salinas de Añana (3.3k at 5.7%). The peloton now being led by Marchewka is at 2’34. Polanco and Balloni did not continue their attacks.
At the top Vendrame just edges Barbero to add 6 more points and close within 2 of Kulppi.
69k to go. JURA have turned the chasing over to the teams hunting the stage win. Right now, the gap is 28 seconds to Osborne and Kulppi and 3’15 to Vendrame and Barbero. Doing the chasing are Podium Ambition (White), UBS (Haugard), Trans (Stimulak), Gjensidige (Della Lunga), Ekoi (Jiang) and Popo4ever (Bilyi) and Xero (Vermeersch).
On the next Cat 3 Vendrame cracks before the top and Barbero takes maximum points. There are about 60k to ride with a Cat 3 climb about every 15k between here and the finish, with the last one peaking about 8k from the end.
About 3 minutes later Polanco grabs the last 2 points on the climb from the peloton as the other two escapees are caught. Vendrame has taken the lead in the KOM competition with 26 to 24 for Kulppi, 22 for Barbero and 16 for Polanco.
At the first sprint point with 52k to go the breakaway only takes the first two slots so the peloton contests the remaining points and Russo edges Lagane. Barbero is solo at the moment, 2’52 up. Vendrame 34 seconds behind him.
Barbero is still solo as he adds 6 more points at the next Cat 3, the Alto de Zaldiarán (3.5k at 4.9%). His lead on the stage is 2’11 with Vendrame almost back in the pack. The riders will tackle the Alto de Zaldiarán a second time as the final climb of the day.
Gjensidige domestiques riding tempo take the rest of the points meaning Barbero is now the virtual KOM leader. Only the two original breakaway riders have been dropped from the peloton.
30k for the peloton and they have Barbero in their sites although he should be able to hang on to the top of the Cat 3 Aldo de Vitoria, which is only 1k ahead. After that only the 2nd ascent of the Alto de Zaldiarán left in terms of climbing. In addition, there is one more sprint point. The work in the peloton being done mostly by Podium Ambition (O’Connor) and Gjensidige (Lunder).
But Barbero has nothing left and he is passed by Balloni and Lunder before the top and only adds 2 points to his KOM lead.
Still 181 riders in the peloton, the next milestone is the 2nd sprint point in about 6k.
Russo wins the sprint, and this time it is for 6 points. Lienhard 2nd and then Frame.
11k to go and as soon as the peloton starts the final ascent Calmejane attacks. Almost the full peloton behind, this is a brave attack.
But the GC guys think there is an opportunity here and Oomen leads a counter with a lot of the favorites on his wheel. But Oomen isn’t a great puncheur and with 1.6k to climb Calmejane still has a 10 second lead. Oomen has drawn a 14-rider group a little clear of the peloton.
Past the 1k banner Calmejane’s lead is 19 seconds over the chase group. The peloton being led by Podium Ambition are another 25 seconds back. The chase group is 13 strong now with a who’s-who of the favorites:
Oomen
Beltran
Dunbar
Masnada
De Plus
Buchmann
Izagirre
Houle
Eiking
Waeytens
Kron
Quevedo
Vogt
Over the top Calmejane has a 9 second lead as Beltran launches an attack behind. The peloton is now 46 seconds down and look to be in trouble as White is isolated on the front and needs some help. 8.5k to go mostly downhill. With nobody relevant scoring points Barbero is confirmed as the KOM leader.
Under 5k to go, Calmejane showing off his broad skill set still has 10 seconds. Houle, is probably the favorite from the chasers in the sprint so he is leading the pursuit. Beltran was unable to get a gap. Peloton is still 41 seconds behind the chasers.
2k to go. Calmejane’s lead up to 16 seconds as most of the GC guys in the chase aren’t willing to work and potentially set up one of their rivals for bonus seconds. Kelly has now come to the front of the peloton and has closed the gap to 33 seconds, but it might be too little too late, although he has caused some chaos as a 25-rider group has split off the front.
Beltran on the front of the chase group, 1k banner for Calmejane who has a 16-second lead. The third group, still led by Podium Ambition, is 28 seconds behind the group pictured.
400 meters, Calmejane suffering now as Houle launches he sprint behind. Pidcock has launched his sprint from the third group on the road but it doesn’t look like they will catch up. The main body of the peloton is not far behind the 3rd group and could still close the gap.
Houle, Eiking, and Kron lead the sprint behind as Calmejane feels safe enough to celebrate.
Calmejane wins Stage 3. He combines, a great skill set, an audacious attack and some hesitation in the chase to achieve a memorable victory. Houle and Eiking take 2nd and 3rd.
The next four are Kron, Buchmann, Quevedo and De Plus.
Oomen, Dunbar, amd Waeytens wrap up the top 10.
There is a clear gap after the first 14 to the next group where Pidcock (in green) went too early and is passed by Dzervus and Lagane, among others.
The gap between the first two group is 36 seconds but that is the only gap and most of the rest of the peloton is awarded the same time. But it is enough to break the JURA dominance at the top of the GC. They still hold first through Masnada but second is now Izagirre at 8 seconds with Oomen 3rd on 18 seconds.
Calmejane takes over the points lead. Brunel retains the young rider jersey but JURA lose the team’s jersey to Lierse.
The time trial is tomorrow so it is likely the leaderboard will be changing again.
