Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Pais Vasco is a 165 ride around the hills in the area of Bilbao. Two ascents of the Cat 2 Alto de Vivero in the last 50k are the main obstacles of the day. There is also an earlier cat 3 and some uncategorized bumps. One sprint point comes just 24k into the stage.

Kinoshita won this stage last year so look for the puncheurs to be aggressive in the closing kilometers. The organizers see it as a finely balanced stage GC riders, hybrids, puncheurs and even the ultimate all-rounder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock, on the favorites list.

5 riders establish the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Frison the lone PCT representative. The other four are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/taf.png Kulppi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Polanco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Cruz, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Balloni. JEWA-TIROL tried to get pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Schlechter across but Podium Ambition and JURA were not willing to let the break go to 6 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/PVasco/S2/01.jpg

At the sprint point Polanco takes the points ahead of Frison and Cruz.

124k to go, the break’s lead went up to about 4’40 before the chasers began to work. Now it is 4’17. On the front are Xero (Vermeersch), Podium Ambition (White), Trans (Jang) and Jura (Marchewka).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/PVasco/S2/03.jpg

Skipping ahead to 68k to go the break is on the first categorized climb, the Cat 3 Alto de Morga, 2.9k at an average of 5%. The lead mostly hovered between 4 and 5 minutes but is now down to 3’05 as the endgame gets underway. JURA have left the chasing to the teams focused on the stage win so now it is Xero, Podium Ambition, Trans, Gjensidige and Popo4Ever.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/PVasco/S2/04.jpg

At the top Cruz jumps first but ends up last. Kulppi takes maximum points ahead of Frison and Polanco. None of the breakaway are particularly good on the climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/PVasco/S2/05.jpg

The Cat 3 is followed by an uncategorized clmb that peaks with 60k to go. At the top of that the peleton are 2’57 down on the break. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png White, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Della Lunga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Sobrero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Haugard, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Horvat. About 5k to the first ascent of the Alto del Vivero. No riders have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/PVasco/S2/06.jpg

3.4k to the top of the Aldo del Vivero for the break. Their lead is 2’41. The climb is 5k at 6.7% pretty steady but the steepest sections are near the bottom.
