Stage 1 Report

Stage 1 of the Ronde van Nederland is 178km ending in Schimmert. It is rated flat but includes a significant number of climbs including 4 cat 3’s. There is also a single sprint point. The conditions look tough with rain at the start and moderate winds.

The organizers aren’t sure if the sprinters can hang on to this one and have made pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates the favorite, but a number of sprinters also appear on the start list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/favs.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Stojnic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Wohler are the first attackers, but lots of other riders trying to join them and the pace stays high. Stojnic drops Wohler and extends the lead to 1 minute. The Amaysim rider 12 seconds down and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Marijn Van Den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Cardona at 48 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/01.jpg

The first cat 3 climb is the Bemmelberg. Wohler was able to rejoin Stojnic but not strong enough to take the points away from him. Their lead is 1’17 over the peloton. Cardona and Van Den Berg have been caught and replaced on the attack by the other pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Bush and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Würtz. Those 3 are 56 seconds behind of the leaders and 21 seconds ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg takes the other 2 points at the KOM. The three chasers have expanded their lead to 50 seconds so it looks like they may be allowed to join the break.

150k to ride and the race has settled down. The five attackers are together and have opened up a 4’31 lead. The sprint teams doing the chasing: ISA-Hexacta (Jurado), ELCO (Evangelos) and Moser (Nommela). The second Cat 3, the Loorberg, is in 18k.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/03.jpg

On the Loorberg, Van den Berg gets 6 points. Stojnic and Würtz the rest. 6k to the next cat 3, the lead is 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/04.jpg

At that climb, the Groenweg, Stojnic strikes back and edges Würtz for maximum points. Peloton still at 5’04.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/05.jpg

Bush gets 3rd. Stojnic leads Van den Berg 16-8 in the competition. With just one Cat 3 left the Cedevita man will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow.

At the lone sprint point Bush edges Van den Berg and Wohler. Peloton at 5’11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/06.jpg

Wohler punctures and has to bridge back up to the break.

70k go now for the peloton with the same three teams and riders working. The break is 6k from the final categorized climb, the Cauberg, and their lead is down to 2’28. Tthe bumpy course is causing trouble and the peloton is currently split in half with 97 riders 58 seconds down. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann probably the biggest names caught out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Stojnic extends his KOM lead by winning the last climb ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Bush. The peloton is back is all back together. 62k’s to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/08.jpg

50k to go for the peleton they trail the break by 1’41. The pack is on the short climb up into Schimmert, which peaks at a 7.8% grade. They tackle this climb 3 more times and then the 4th time they finish at the top. Riders will need to be attentive if they aren’t going to be caught out of position on this climb. Currently there are 69 riders off the back. Gazelle working to close the gap as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Malecki is among those caught out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/09.jpg

The next time over the finish line the peloton is back together again. The break’s lead is 1’07. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Mraouni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Salazar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Andersen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Toupalik then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Evangelos, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kortsidakis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/10.jpg

Another lap done, break still hold 53 seconds with 25k to go. Stojnic attacked the break and was brought back now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Würtz is trying.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/11.jpg

Stojnic and Wohler are caught soon after. A 25-rider briefly splits off the front of the peloton but is quickly brought back.

As the riders hear the bell for one lap to go the break is almost caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Andersen leading. The sprinters are all up front but they aren’t going to have much in the way of lead outs. The peloton has not split again, just a few riders dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/12.jpg

2.1k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Toupalik out front with a long gap back to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard foregoing a lead out, intead he is sitting on Gaviria’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan is passing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Dlamini on his right, he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Baska and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Paez ahead of him. The sprinters behind Coquard are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Groves, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/13.jpg

They hit the base of the climb with 900 meters to go. Gaviria leads from Coquard and Paez, Ewan two riders back along the rail. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen is coming hard on the far left. The next row behind the sprinters already mentioned includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/14.jpg

This was not the sprint to go early, Gaviria is being swamped all the sprinters close together right now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter are the three who haven’t already been mentioned in that front group. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi are trying to get across.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/15.jpg

400 meters, Groves is on the front. Gradients are close to 8% here. Just out of picture a number of the puncheurs are moving forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/16.jpg

The grades ease off around this corner before going up again to the line. Samolenkov has taken advantage of the inside line to take the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/17.jpg

100 meters it is Samolenkov versus Groves, Hsu in third. Look out for the World Champion towards the left, he has come roaring out of nowhere and is making up ground fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov celebrates, he took the shortest route. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Groves with a strong second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski with a great finish for 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Hsu next and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh. A good finish for him was needed as his presence likely kept pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates out of the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke takes 6th then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan. Ewan finished well but got caught a little too far back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand closes out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/21.jpg

Points and GC lead for Samolenkov. Groves is the best young rider.
