Stage 3 Report

After some initial skirmishes in Stages 1 and 2 the Volta a Catalunya really gets started today with the team time trial. One of the critical stages for the GC. Last year JURA won it and Fausto Masnada went on to win the race.

It is 40k of mostly flat kilometers.

SEE Turtles, Bordeaux and Würth are the top favorites. Race favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello’s Crabbe team are one tier lower while his biggest rival pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Berhane and his JEWA-TIROL team are another tier down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/favs.jpg

Babymetal are the first team on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/01.jpg

Saeco are the second team on the course. Their leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ciccone, has struggled so far losing 2’29 on stage 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/02.jpg

Next are Air New Zealand, their leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Fabbro was one of the GC riders who survived stage 1 in the front group. They take the lead at the first-time check, 14 seconds up on Babymetal and 26 seconds ahead of Saeco. But they are already down to 5 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/03.jpg

Tafjord Kraft are also down to 5 as they pass the first-time check. They are 4 seconds down on the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/04.jpg

Genii are the next team on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/05.jpg

Next are Team Würth they have the lead at the first time check now. Genii were 4 seconds slower and Bordeaux and Manada Coyote have also passed the first time check on the same time as Genii.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/06.jpg

We catch up with Bordeaux at the 2nd time check. They still have 8 riders. The second segment not great for them as they have dropped 5 seconds further behind Team Würth and are now 9 seconds down. Genii came through 6 seconds down on Team Würth to claim sole possession of second at the second time check

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/07.jpg

At the first time check Caja Rural have taken over 5th, 16 seconds down. No other notable times.

Manada Coyote are the next team through the second check. They were in a three-way time with Genii and Bordeaux at the first time check, They need to beat Crabbe if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Jensen is to going to reclaim the leaders jersey (and they can’t drop him). But a poor second section for them as they go from 4 seconds to 32 seconds behind Team Würth. The second section has the climbing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/08.jpg

Sony - Force India are next, they won’t put a top time today, already 31 seconds down at the first check. But those are some cool wheels. Meanwhile Podium Ambition have set a new best time at the first check (-0’04) with 8 teams left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/09.jpg

Stela – Vita are also out of it at the first check, 32 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/10.jpg

Caja Rural come through the 2nd check 37 seconds down, that is 7th place right now. They had a number of GC cards to play, unfortunately, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Serrano, the only one not to lose time on Stage 1 is not among the 6 riders here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/11.jpg

Two of the favorites have completed the first section. Gjensidige are the new leaders, 3 seconds up on Podium Ambition while SEE Turtles are 4 seconds slower than their fellow islanders, 3rd on the stage.

Despite the presence of well-known TT specialist pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Keizer, Hilcona only managed 14th place at the first check, 37 seconds down on Gjensidige.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/12.jpg

As a PCT team Lampre couldn’t bring their A squad, they are 10th 25 seconds down at the first check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/13.jpg

Podium Ambition are the next team at the 2nd check, not a great second segment for them, they go from 4 seconds ahead of Team Würth to 7 seconds slower. Only good enough for 3rd at the 2nd check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/14.jpg

The last team to start, Crabbe, have completed the first segment, a disappointing 9th for them, 23 seconds down. With all teams having completed the first segment the full standings look like this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/std1.jpg

At the same time 14 teams have passed the second check point and the standings look like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/std2.jpg

Ekoi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre have been very active in the first two stages but the Team Time Trial is not their thing, they are 1’18 down at the 2nd check (14 out of 16), Paret-Peintre will be dropping down the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/15.jpg

A much better day on the GC for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke as his Gjensidige team have blitzed the second segment, extending their lead over Team Würth from 7 seconds to 21 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/16.jpg

But it doesn’t look like Team Würth will be a key competitor. They have collapsed in the final third of the race dropping 33 seconds to Genii who have the lead at the finish. Other notable times at the finish are Bordeaux (2nd +0,05), Tafjord Kraft (3rd +0’12) and Manada Coyote (5th, +0’41). Würth sit 4th 26 seconds down.

Adidas-Eurocash are not likely to be players at the finish, they are 1’34 down, in 16th at the 2nd check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/17.jpg

SEE Turtles have 10k left to ride, they went through the second check in 2nd, 17 seconds behind Gjensidige and 4 seconds ahead of Würth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/18.jpg

Podium Ambition have put in a nice final segment and taken over the lead at the finish by 8 seconds. That puts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer in the virtual leader’s jersey (of those who have finished).

Simba Cement won’t be a threat to that, they are 1’22 down after the second check, 16h place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/19.jpg

None of the teams remaining on the course put in top times at the second check. So with everyone through the standings look like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/std3.jpg

Gjensidige has completed the course and taken over the lead at the finish, with 16 teams home the standings look like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/std4.jpg

While Gjensidige have the lead at the finish and look good for the stage win they will not get the leader’s jersey. They lost time to Podium Ambition in the final third and came up well short of the 43 seconds they would have needed to displace Mayer.

SEE Turtles are likely the last threat to a Gjensidige stage win and they can’t get it done, they gain 7 seconds in the last segment but that puts them 10 seconds down on the day, in second place.

Stava are under the 1k banner. They weren’t expected to be a factor and they haven’t been. They finish 19th, 2’35 down, only Saeco behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/20.jpg

JEWA-TIROL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Berhane were 51 seconds down at the 2nd check. Since Gjensidige GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke started on the same time as Berhane the difference at the end of the stage will be the gap between them in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/21.jpg

They finish 1’02 down.

Crabbe is last team on the course. All 8 riders are together at the finish but they will need to have had a good final segment to retain the GC lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Altanzul started the day 12 seconds up on Mayer and they had dropped 18 seconds on Podium Ambition at the second time check.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S3/22.jpg

They finish 1’01 down.

Gjensidige win the stage, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer takes over the leader’s jersey, 7 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Pavlic and 17 seconds up on the Gjensidige trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Jacobsen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Van Moer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunke seizes a GC advantage as he has 1’01 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello and 1’03 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Berhane. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Iturria best placed among the other GC riders 40 seconds behind Lunke.

Mayer also takes over the best young rider jersey while Gjensidige now lead the team’s competition.
