Stage 2 Report

Today is the lone sprint stage in the race, 173k from Santa Coloma de Farners to Banyoles. A Cat 3 and a cat 1 along the way as well as lots of bumps towards the end so maybe not straightforward for the sprint teams. And given this is the only sprint stage a fairly light field. A chance for some outsiders to score a victory.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat is by far the most established sprinter here and he tops the favorites list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/favs.jpg

12k gone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Martinelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bbm.png Yamada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Arias Villanueva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Malmberg, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Predatsch have a gap on the peloton of 1’20. More riders have been trying to join but the peloton, led by JEWA TIROL have been reluctant to let them go. Currently it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Garcia Pierna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Alben, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Hamza trying to join the riders up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/01.jpg

The peloton isn’t willing to let three more rider go, they are willing to let one go, and so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Tim Van Dijke is allowed to escape. However, he is struggling to bridge on his own and still has 37 seconds to cross to reach the front. 150k to go for the leaders and they have 3’09.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/02.jpg

First sprint point, Van Dijke has reached the front and he is the only one interested in the points and easily takes first. He is the closest on GC in the break at 2’29. Peloton at 5’45, 130k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/03.jpg

120k for the peloton. Strava (Maesen), Ekoi (Delbove) and JEWA (Rabitsch) are working on the front and have the gap down to 5’14. Ahead, the break is on the first climb, the Cat 3 Alt de la Ganga (3.1k at 6%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/04.jpg

Van Dijke also proves strongest on the climb. Martinelli and Malmberg take the rest of the points. Of those in the break only Arias Villaneuva scored in the KOM competition yesterday and he has just 6 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/05.jpg

95k in the stage and 5k to climb for the breakaway. They are on the main obstacle for the day, the Cat 1 Alt dels Àngels. The two Manada Coyotes riders have not been working in the break. The break’s lead is 3’58.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/06.jpg

Martinelli goes first at the top of the Cat 1 but he can’t hold on and Yamada gets maximum points while Van Dijke makes a late charge but can’t quite catch Martinelli, so the Italian takes 12 points and Van Dijke 10. With that Martinelli, Yamada and Van DIjke are all tied on 16 points, good for 4th place in the KOM standings. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Pavlic will hold the jersey another day with his 32 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/07.jpg

Malmberg, Murillo, Arias Villanueva and Predatsch take the remaining points on the climb. The lead is 3’53.

Over the top about 40 riders are dropped from the peloton, most significantly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Hayter (3rd on GC) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Serrano but a lot of work from Phillips and a few other teams eventually closed the gap.

At the second sprint Van DIjke wins again, ahead of Malmberg and Predatsch. The peloton at 2’19 with the same teams working. 49k to go, the riders are now on the finishing circuit which they will do 4 times.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/08.jpg

26k to go for the peloton, they have cut the break’s lead to 37 seconds, looks like no joy for the break today. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Thompson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Bauhaus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Tarvis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Schlechter, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre. The latter appears to be hanging out near the front but not contributing to the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/09.jpg

With 19k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Tim Van Dijke is dropped by the break and caught by the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Predatsch also in trouble. The remaining 5 have a 32-second lead.

12k to go, the peloton is on the final lap now, all the of the break have been caught except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Arias Villanueva who has 16 seconds. Ekoi taking primary responsibility for closing the gap with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Dylan Hopkins on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/10.jpg

Karatsivis makes the catch with about 7k to go but as the peloton takes the 5k banner there is a split with 81 riders caught out. Notable names include Hayter again plus 9th through 11th in GC:pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Schachmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Mager as well as GC-man pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Ciccone. There may be other big names but the situation is fluid. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Gogl taking responsibility for closing the gap right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/11.jpg

The gap is closed and the peloton is all back together with 2.4k to go as the sprint launches. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre leads out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Russo on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Malori leads out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat on the right. Although both sprinters have some work to do to get on their lead our wheels.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/12.jpg

Malori quickly fades and under the 1k banner it is still APP on the front although he is almost done. Behind him it is Russo, Boudat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Aregger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Luchshenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Oka

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/13.jpg

600 meters, Russo is quickly overwhelmed, APP going backwards now on the left-hand rail. Boudat on the left and Aregger on the right go to the front. Sanikwathi just behind them. On the far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Altanzul has a lane on the rail with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/twm.png Koch on his wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Thwaites to his inside.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/14.jpg

300 meters, not a lot of change, Boudat in front. Sanikwathi getting closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/15.jpg

100 meters, Boudat looks like he is going to lose it in the closing meters with all of Aregger, Thwaites, Sankikwathi and Altanzul just behind him. The Lampre rider moving fastest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Luchshenko still in the picture in the center and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer also closing in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/16.jpg

Boudat can’t hold on, it is photo between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Thwaites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Altanzul grabs the last podium spot and the bonus seconds. He is going to be tied for the GC lead after today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Boudat just holds on for 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Luchshenko. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Aregger fades to 6th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Oka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Lunder, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Vernon complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Catalunya/S2/19.jpg

The call comes in on the photo finish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sva.png Sanikwathi has won stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya.

Altanzul takes over the GC lead on placings and also takes over the points lead. Hayter stays in the peloton and retains his best young rider jersey. Crabbe still lead the teams competition.
