Paris - Nice - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0004.jpg

Todays stage very likely is going to end the sprinter domination in the GC and will be vital for the GC contenders. 25,8 km ITT, mainly flat, a short climbing section starting the 2nd half as also a bit of uphill in the final part. Today the punchy time trialists can make a huge step forward GC against the puncheurs, who then need to attack them on the following stages to move back into GC contention.

And then there`s some TT riders, that are there for today only, no longer GC chances for those.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Dal Col really just an outside favourite today, but as 167th he is on the road early to set the first bigger best time.
29'24

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0007.jpg

It doesn`t last long though as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Fernandes goes 11s faster. Either a difference on daily form or the climb has a bit of an impact here.
The depth in that range of TT strength is very big and you can easily drop several spots within a few seconds in the end.
29'13

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Razumov comes in as 3rd only followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Fung.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0313.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Vlatos is the first of the big favourites today. He stat wise is shared 2nd with 3 other riders, but the weakest on the climb. Therefore he is having a solid ride apparently as he beats the others setting the new best time at
29'06

None of Goldstein, Atkins, Vorobev, Kukrle, Christodoulos, Kiriakidis able to beat this. The Russian coming closest at provisional 2nd and 6s off!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0322.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Hofer coming close as well. 2nd at both checkpoints but then losing a bit in the end. Provisional 4th behind Vorobev and Fernandes as well. Onodera, Kämna in the same range later on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0330.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Mano has lost all GC chances earlier but might be one for today. Same TT skills as Vlatos but better on the uphill.
Seems to be the other way around though or experience wins the energy management. Almost on par with the hot seat but then losing it a bit in the end. +1s! 2nd for Mano at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0334.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Lammertink next. Same TT again, bigger engine on the flat. And this one helps the Cedevita rider to take over. A new best time, just 4s faster than Vlatos, but this is enough for him.
29'02

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0338.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Bjerg is not far off the top5 riders on paper and he comes close beating most of the earlier starters. Basically all but the top3, Lammertink, Vlatos and Mano all remain in front of him. But 4th so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0340.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Hayter is very similar to Bjerg, even stronger engine on the flat and as well at age 25 only both riders to watch out for in the next years.
Today Bjerg wins the direct duel but Hayter still with a good ride just behind Bjerg and Vorobev in the provisional top6.

Cosnefroy and Dennis later on losing a bit more being in the range 20-25s behind Lammertink while Ioannidis going a lot better, 2s faster than Hayter/Vorobev and provisional top10 stage and GC for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0346.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko is no TT rider but one of the strongest puncheurs. How much time is he going to lose today? Can he and others bounce back on the hills later on?
Basically 30-45s each checkpoint! That`s in total around 2min off and this will be hard to gain again on strong punchy TT riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0348.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Izagirre not having his best TT it seems being 39s off, though that`s gaining more than a minute on pure puncheurs. Not too bad and he goes into the virtual top5 GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0350.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Geoghegan Hart as well not having his very best TT, but it`s not bad neither. 14s slower than Lammertink in the second fight today. That`s enough for the virtual GC lead even!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Conci and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda will surround him in virtual GC. The first being same time in both, stage and GC but rated ahead, while the later goes slower today but will move in between Hart and Izagirre/Ioannidis in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0354.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Oliveira, Ivo this is and a stronger version of countryman Nelson Oliveira.

He moves into provisional 4th of the day just beaten by the top3 but faster than Bjerg and others. This also means, he beats Conci for provisional GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0356.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen though combines the top level TT skills with decent level hill skills. A pretty unique combination alongside a great climbing setup. And as seen already this season, he goes on to take the top favourite spot after today. New best time, 10s faster than Lammertink and hard to believe, someone is able to beat this, new GC leader virtually as well. First rider to stay under 29min:
28'52

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0358.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Ganna probably the only rider to beat him. Next to Wirtgen, he is likely the strongest overall TT rider here and he goes 2s slower at the first point, then losing another second here and there and in the end is 16s slower than Wirtgen! This means, while strongest on paper, he today is weakest of the four tier 2 TT riders. Being beaten by Lammertink, Vlatos and Mano alongside Wirtgen.

GC wise though he was the only rider next to Wirtgen still playing a role and this will see him being 2nd in GC, 1s ahead of Oliveira and in fact a rather decent gap to the strongest puncheurs so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0360.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie is having mediocre TT skills and is showing those today. He is losing a lot less than Lutsenko earlier and in fact is losing around 1 min less! Still losing 69s to Wirtgen but staying close to the top10 GC and chances to improve of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0364.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich is even a bit stronger in TTs, while also being no expert.
Therefore losing another 7s today having had a weaker performance as the Belgium. GC wise still being one spot ahead of De Bie in the direct duel of best pure puncheur.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0366.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan is the last of those but just like Lutsenko losing around 2min. GC wise due to earlier standings remaining just in between the Giddich/De Bie and Lutsenko area. All four will need to ride aggressive to improve in the GC as clearly having lost the favourite title today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_05_PCM0375.jpg

Last picture of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen in the leader jersey. He is losing 2'39 today and just like all other sprinters is now quite a bit behind in the GC.

Philipsen and Bol are the only top15 sprinters left but sitting 1'22 and 1'32 behind already.
