Volta a Catalunya
The Volta a Catalunya starts with a mid-mountain stage that both starts and finishes in Lloret de Mar. In getting back to where they started the rider will cover 154k including 2 sprint points and two Cat 1 climbs. There is also an uncategorized climb that peaks just 5k before the finish, where the decisive attacks could occur.
Last year this stage was won by Michal Schlegel who ended the race 4th in GC. The favorite for the stage this year is Paret-Peintre who will also be hunting a top finish 6-days from now. But the rest of the favorites, with the exception of Barta, are puncheurs for whom this and Stage 5 are likely the main objectives.
A sunny start to the stage and most of the riders are taking a nap. Pavlic, Hayter, and Selimovic are the only early attackers and they quickly open up 1’57. Pavlic seems like a strong rider to be in the early break, particularly with a teammate.
Those 3, who are the only ones who tried to attack, form the break of the day. With 113k to go they start the first of the two Cat 1’s. It is the Alt de Sant Hilari, 9.1k at 5.9%, big crowds welcome them on to the climb. The lead is 5’35.
With 1k to climb Hayter tries to take it to the two Genii riders and attacks.
But he overestimates himself and has to sit down just a few meters short and both Genii riders go by him. Pavlic gets maximum points.
The lead is up to 6’29 as Manfredi brings the peloton over the top of the climb. Arias Villanueva,, Vauquelin and Kaden Hopkins take the last of the KOM points.
Manfredi leads all the way down the descent and by the time they reach the first sprint point, with 87k to go, the lead is down to 5’56. Ahead Hayter took the sprint with Pavlic 2nd.
At the second sprint Pavlic gets the better of Hayter. But with 57k to go the peloton has the lead down to 3’22. Sanikwathi on the front. Other teams working include Crabbe (Berckmoes), Podium Ambition (K. Hopkins), Stela-Vita (John), Ekoi (Vauquelin) and Simba Cement (Manfredi).
As the break start the second climb with 39k to go their lead is 3’01. The climb is the Alt de San Grau, it is 5.2k at 6.1% but the first half is pretty flat meaning the second half has significant gradients.
In the pack a split occurs on the short ascent before the beginning of the climb. 26 riders are gapped including most notably Ciccone. Right now Saeco are leaving the work of closing the gap to Genii, although Genii's leader Barta just made the split. Munoz also just made it across although Ablenardo did not. Keizer is another big name on the wrong side of affairs.
700 meters from the top and Hayter is again the first to attack. The peloton is at 3’09 with 35k to ride. Behind work from Martinelli and Shirota brought the gapped riders back but there are likely to be more splits over the top of this climb.
Hayter is able to drop Selimovic but Pavlic easily goes by him to take 16 more points. The Genii man has made a significant down payment on the KOM competition.
Karatsivis and Russo lead the pack over 3’37 down on Pavlic. Jensen is the next man, he was one of the stage favorites but he needs some help from his team here. There is some chance the break can stay away unless the peloton gets going. Two significant but uncategorized climbs still to come.
22k to go, the break is on the first of the uncategorized climbs, they are back together but their lead has shrunk to 2’03 thanks mainly to work from Ekoi. The peloton is down to 127 riders. Keizer and Abelnardo are dropped again but Ciccone is safe at the moment, although he is a long way back, as is Barta.
13k to go, Selimovic is just 23 seconds ahead, the other two 36 seconds. Goos on the front now as Stela-Vita and Caja Rural have both been contributing to the chase. Peloton down to 99. Disaster for Tafjord as most of their team, including Garby have been dropped and are already 1’53 down. Dyrnes and Vangstad the only ones in the peloton. Stage-win outsider Niu has also been dropped. Ciccone is the last man in the peloton right now and Munoz is just clinging on as well.
9k to go, Russo catches Selimovic, the leaders are 33 seconds ahead and a few hundred meters from the last uncategorized climb. O'Connor has been contributing to the chase and Chiarello is also near the front.
7k to ride the leaders are on the final climb and have a 32 second lead. But Jensen has just launched an attack from the peloton with Altanzul on his wheel.
600 meters later, Jensen, Altanzul and Mayer have a gap and have caught up to Hayter, who has been dropped by Pavlic. Just behind, Paret-Peintre trying to bridge across as well.
Jensen breaks away from the others and catches Pavlic with the 5k banner in sight. The banner also marks the top of the climb. But Mayer is leading the others (Mayer, Altanzul, Paret-Peintre and Hayter) back up to them. The rest of the peloton at 36 seconds.
Under the 5k banner the front 6 are all together although Hayter and Altanzul are in trouble. Peloton back to 43 seconds, no more rider dropped. Mostly downhill from here but the last k is flat.
2.8k for the chase group. They are 32 seconds behind the 6 escapees who are all together. The front 6 In the chase group are: Mager, Luchshenko, Serrano, Dyrnes, Schachmann, and Sirironnachai. Dyrnes could do with a good result here as all the Tafjord GC riders are well back now. Another 30 riders dropped now including Munoz, Alarcon, Mannion, Ciccone, Kritskiy and Barta. A lot of GC outsiders taking a hit today.
Under the 1k banner and Jensen goes for it. Altanzul is the best sprinter in the group, although Mayer and Paret-Peintre are both solid. The lead is 32 seconds, the stage win is between these 6.
500 meters for Jensen, behind, Altanzul, in the Mongolian champion’s jersey for Crabbe, has a lane and is beginning to make up ground. The two from the break are the weakest, which is not surprising.
300 meters, they are closing in on Jensen but they are running out of road.
Jensen initiated the attack that created the winning move and then went early in the sprint and was strong enough to hold on, he celebrates a fine victory for Manada Coyote. Altanzul comes up a few meters short and settles for second, Mayer third and Paret-Peintre 4th. He will miss out on time bonuses but Ekoi’s work does result in some gains in the GC from the gap. Hayter takes 5th, Pavlic 6th.
35 seconds later Luchshenko leads the next group home for 7th. Lunder, Scheit and Schachmann complete the top 10.
In the run in to the finale there is another split which catches out Manfredi, Elosegui O'Connor and Goos.
Jensen gets the GC lead and the points lead as well as the stage win. A great day for the break as they get stage points and high GC positions and Hayter will also get the young rider’s jersey as his sprint bonuses are bigger than Mayer’s time bnus for 3rd place. Pavlic gets the KOM lead, a jersey he will hope to defend.
Crabbe gets the team’s jersey.
